I have the most fantastic news. We changed Cole's medication to Risperdal. He had been taking straterra and abilify. We discontinued the abilify and are continuing the straterra. The transformation has been incredible. He has been on the new med for about 2 weeks. All of a sudden it is like there is actually a child with a personality. He responds to a question and is taking care of himself. He is 8 yrs old and we were not getting much growth out of him. All of he has a opinion and a lot more energy! We are still having aggression issues at school, but hoping that will improve. I am so excited and wanted to pass this info on. Finally a child who has been fighting to get out finally emerges!

Lori, thats great to hear I have been checking into the new drug and wondered if it would help my child. Right now he is 4 but when he is older we may be able to put him on this. Keep us posted if you would on the progress. Ada Ticklelori jennings <lozzy3us@...> wrote: I have the most fantastic news. We changed Cole's medication to Risperdal. Hi, I'm glad your son is doing so much better. There is someting

you'll need to watch out for on the Rispidal. My son was on it for

over a year and was doing fine. Then all of a sudden he started his

hands started shaking. Not flapping but having tremers. His

pediatrician did some research and in one of his books it says

tremers can be a sideffect of Rispidal. But another book didn't say

anything about it. We stopped the Rispidal and he hasn't had the

shakes again. It was strange because he had been on it for over a

year before the tremers happened. Every child processing medication

differently My son could not take straterra because it made him

mean. So, I hope this won't be a problem for your son. I just

wanted to let you know so you can keep a watch out.

I think something great McCarthy said on Oprah was that 'one size does not fit all....' Same with meds!! As we all know (I am sure) regardless of the medication, we need to watch, ask, and listen very closely!

Our son was on Abilify (which is about the same medication, just much more expensive---a month's supply BEFORE insurance in our state was $575 / mo for 30 pills!!!).....when it 'mixed' with the buspar (dr. had upped buspar when he started it) at the dose the dr. wanted it at, our son was blacking out AND NOT TELLING ANYONE!!! We found out that, in our large middle school, he was basically not in class for 2 weeks---he was going to the wrong class and had NO IDEA what to do / didn't want to tell anyone so he was 'hanging out somewhere--he does not know where---or never told us BUT NOT AT CLASS--'

A BRAVE teacher contacted us and asked what is going on with / he thought a diabetic issue and at the nurse's office; nurse did not know this was going on / thought in class, and so we asked , and found out; my husband and I got a sitter, went to the book store, researched, and by the next morning, he was being taken off of that med with the doctor's immediate response of how to taper off / after a while, we realized he needed the 'mood stabilizer' and so Risperdahl was the re-introduced drug.....that is going great so far.

We are lucky our story was a 'happy ending' as we felt shocked and are glad we caught it, even though not as soon as we would have liked.
