Hello all!

This is my first posting. I'm the Mom of an 11 year-old boy who has

been diagnosed with AS (among other things). Josh was diagnosed last

summer after 6 years of going to many counselors, doctors,

psychologists etc. The school was really no help. They would not even

go to eligibility until 3rd grade. He did start receiving services at

the end of 3rd grade under the Emotional Disturbance label (at the

time we had no idea what AS was). Of course none of their

interventions helped. He just kept getting worse.

At the end of last year we pursued testing for AS through a private

Autism clinic. We received a diagnosis from this clinic. A few weeks

later, we saw a Developmental Pediatrician who, after talking with me

and Josh, and doing some of her own teating, she agreed with the AS

diagnosis. Then, his psychologist, who has been seeing him regularly

for 2+ years, also agreed.

We thought since we had 3 seperate doctors who diagnosed Josh we

would have no problem changing the label from ED to Autism.

Unfortunately, the school system thought otherwise. One of the school

psychologists wants to do additional neuropsychological assessments

to 'provide some diagnostic information pertinent to the diagnosis of

AS'. We've been advised by another psychologist that it sounds like

the school psychologist is motivated by his ego not the best interest

of the child.

We want to refuse to allow them to continue with the assessments but

we're not sure if that will make things worse. Also, it sounds like

the assessment is for diagnostic purposes, and I thought that the

school system cannot diagnose. Am I wrong? Has anyone been through

anything similar and give us some advice?

Karla,

My son is currently undergoing " evaluations " to see if he meets

" educational criteria " for AS!!! I have several reports also that

clearly state that my son suffers from OCD associated with Aspergers

syndrome... but the school told me that his eligibility will probably

not be changed on his IEP.. he is certified as Gifted with other

medical impairments right now. (gifted /adhd ( he does NOT have

adhd... misdiagnosed!!!) So they are happy with that criteria!

They(the school system) is currently doing the same evaluations that

they did last year which came back as INCONCLUSIVE waiting on MEDICAL

reports!! So now that I HAVE the medical reports they are saying that

my son has to MEET EDUCATIONAL CRITERIA to be treated as AS!!!! A

bunch of crap too me.. that's why I'm pulling him out of school.. that

and the fact that they leave my OBVIOUS gifted student sitting there

with work that is several grades below where he is actually

functioning!!! School systems I think for the most part are UNEDUCATED

and they don't want to be educated!!!! LAZY people!!!

Still got lots of angry guys! LOL 2 more weeks and will be

HOME with me!!!! Getting everything taken care of slowly but surely!!!

Hi,

What you need to do is have them send you to a very good

physicatrist (spelling?) on their dime.

My son 17 yrs. AS was sent by his elementary school to a very good

(and I might add expensive one) The school should not be diagnosing,

they can suggest, but you really need a psychatrist to diagnose.

And this is, after all, your tax dollars at work. You are entitled

to the best services.

Please write in again to let us know what happens from here.

Thanks,

Sharon

I would request the information on the school psychologist's background and education. Is this person qualified to do a dx? Ask for the information asap. Also, find out the name(s) of any testing that is being done. There is no one test for autism/AS so I am curious what test he thinks will provide him with the answers. You have a right to know what testing is being done. Check into those tests and find out more about them, what age ranges they cover, what purpose they are used for, what problems they are able to uncover, etc.

The school also is required to provide you with prior written notice - that is, they must give you written notice as to why they are refusing to change his classification, if this is what they decide to do. Be sure and ask for it in writing.

It could be that the psycho is going off to ego-land. But ultimately, you can challenge the results of his testing if the testing does not seem accurate to you. You are can request an independent educational evaluation at school expense. So ultimately, if you see that the tests are ok and allow them to continue but then get a report that does not resemble your child at all, I would request an outside evaluation at their expense.

Sorry, I just sent a blank post. I also wanted to add to my last post about this - that ultimately, services are based on NEED alone and cannot be based on a dx. So I'm not sure what the school would have to gain by not changing the dx classification to be accurate because they must provide the services needed regardless of what they want to call it.
