Guest guest
As a step-parent with an adult step-son with AS-27 years old... who is successfully emancipated and a wardrobe supervisor on a cruise ship in Hawaii- no meltdowns... no quitting the job... He’s gay and I think theatrical types... are given some leeway for being temperamental, touchy, emotional behavior anyway... I loved Miriam’s post in the last digest... his collection of talents and difficulties have the name asperger syndrome. I tell him about interesting and successful people with asperger syndrome. I saw Bill Gates last night on MSNBC- watch him as he talks... His gesturing is very close to my AS brother-in-law’s... Should all of our Aspies be worth 50 Billion some day... Things he said about feeling completely alienated from his peers because he had his mind totally focused on technology... oh yeah... ALSO... OPRAH today is featuring McCarthy and Holly Peete. They are on to speak about Autism today... I’m not sure whether they will discuss the entire spectrum including Asperger’s, but worth watching I would think... ALSO... I didn’t have to fight the good fight for special education for my step-son as he was good in school and also extremely bright... but I did for my own son ADHD/CAPD diagnosed but supposedly too bright to qualify... further complicated by the fact that my husband and I were teachers in the district... My advice... if you are not getting what you need in services... #1, Get an advocate... most communities have a Learning Disabilities Association... and the advocates are readily available free of charge... I had a mom of a student who was one in our community and she gave me Cart Blanche in help... #2. Get the name of an educational attorney... who has sued that district... and won a cash award... Our advocate was married to the one whose name we used... and he sat outside the meeting, just incase... SAY- “I am going to contact an attorney, because I feel X school district is interfering with my child’s rights to a free and appropriate public school education...” I had to say it where I worked... When they hear that rhetoric they know you know... and they get scared... Bottom line Special Education Services cost your district $$$- and they are always looking to keep costs down... So therefore... they only OIL the squeakiest of wheels... As a reading/inclusion teacher you can’t imagine what I have heard in meetings... out of the mouths of Special Education- Directors of Student Services... their success in their job depends on staying within a budget... My ADHD/CAPD son is a successful web-optimizer these days... can get sites to rank in the top 10 on most search engines with the BEST of them... J You are all doing a great job parenting...
