Guest guest
I don't know ......I'm sure you are all going to hate me now but I saw the humour in that clip because that could have been me and Adam when he was a kid. Joy made me laugh....I think laughing at ourselves is healthy....I don't think Joy meant any harm by it , I really don't. Maybe in that instance it was good that she stopped to think that maybe there was a reason the kid was acting up , not because the mom was a poor excuse for a mom...which is what people always assumed with me. When Adam was 4 , was 8 we went to Disney World....OMG !!! what were we thinking....anyway, just like the kid in the restaurant that Joy saw ..we were in along line up for a show in Disney World and this was Adam " IS IT GOING TO START NOW ...IS IT GOING TO START NOW....and this was me ...NO Adam , we have to wait ...IS IT GOING TO START NOW ...IS IT GOING TO START NOW ....then all of a sudden this lady and not a wrinkled lady either, but someone in her 30's turned around and yelled "IS THAT CHILD DEAF OR WHAT " ????? ....Wayne who is never at a loss for words, said "YES HE IS " !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( and he wasn't) and I just started bawling cuz that was what I did best !!!!!!!!!!!! If that had been today perhaps that lady would not have turned around and yelled but instead would have thought" Maybe that child has a problem that's cauzing him to yell that same thing over and over "....anyway, just my opinion. I hope I haven't offended anyone. hugs brenda Wags! Wags! Wags! Lowry "There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face." Guest guest
I agree, When I fall I laugh and my girlfriends laugh at me/with me whatever.. I feel life isn't that serious educating people is one thing but laughing at our self is healthy. Plus I feel my son does some funny stuff and it may not be funny to him but its funny.. Now after I explain to my son who has AS why it was funny he laughs at him self which makes me laugh with him. Comedy is healthy and we may never agree 100% that some comedians are funny but they are just trying to make people laugh. Lampenelli Queen of mean is funny but very mean.. Sorry if anyone doesn't agree. Guest guest
Oh . I'm glad you said it. I watched the clip and wasn't offended. I totally agree with what you said about "it was good that she stopped to think that maybe there was a reason"....................whether she was trying to get a laugh of what. She's a comedian. That's what she does. (I'm not a fan of the show or her, mind you). I often wonder if what I actually say sometimes would be thought of as offensive if I heard it from a NON-SPECTRUM parent. Usually,,,,,,sadly,,,,,it is. I often joke about how our family is the "family of disorders" and "my apples don't fall too far from their trees"..........or that we all "march to the beat of our own drums". This, I hope, is seen as a joke. I do, though, try to only say it with people who know our circumstances. These "comments" from me would be lost on a parent with a "typical" family. So,,,,,,,,,,,you're not alone. I didn't watch it, I don't watch that show because I think they are lame. But I do appreciate your story. There were a lot of times I wish I had a good snappy reply years ago!! Speaking of Walt Disney, we waited many many years before we went just because our younger ds had speech delay and is autistic - just a bad combo and to avoid scenes but mostly to avoid losing him (he is a wanderer). So we finally went and he was 9 yo, I think. We got there in the morning and headed over to Epcot. We walked through the whole place and the only two times our ds acted interested was when a) he saw a cart selling PEPSI products and he saw a fern plant (they were studying plants in science at the time.) I even have a photo of him standing by that fern all happy. Forget all the buildings, smells and people - he noticed the fern. LOL. All I remember saying is I can't believe we flew all that way to see a fern plant. LOL. augh. Guest guest
I watched the clip today and I wasn't offended either. And also, like you said, it was good that she stopped to think that maybe there is a reason for the child acting up. But - and I can't disagree with her here either - I understood when they were talking about kids and just an " annoying child " in general and now -- what with mental health issues being more talked about these days -- it seems like so many do have diagnoses now and she seems to feel -- my impression -- that it seems they're all getting " labeled " , that it's being overdone. I know that I've also wondered whether it's just more awareness, population increase or what that so many people do seem to have ADD or bipolar or other, even autism! (Being almost 50, I'm thinking back to my childhood years too) LOL, I think I have/have had a " touch " of a lot of diagnoses myself over the years; depression being the one that has always come/gone (bouts I guess you call it). Anyway, being a single mom that raised 3 sons, I actually found the clip amusing and true to my experiences. NOW - my sons are pretty much grown. If I had watched the clip and I was still going through all that with my own sons and upset that I just could not get them to behave/listen, I might have got teary listening to it. But I still would have smiled at the woman who began the story about her child being the *only* one crying, etc. Been there! Would make me feel less alone to hear her story. Hope the above didn't come out in some bad way, no offense meant. One of my own stories is with my oldest (typical) son; I used to fuss every time we were in a store at him and the twins. MY kids the only ones who weren't behaving, I'd even point that out to them ( " do you see ANYone else....??!! " ). So my oldest and me were going down an aisle and coming the other way is a woman and child and she is just fussing! Saying same things I was always saying. And me and my oldest looked at each other and had to fight to keep from laughing (so woman wouldn't hear us). We realized how WE sounded/looked and actually both tried to do better from then on, me fussing less, him behaving more. > > > I don't know ......I'm sure you are all going to hate me now but I saw the humour in that clip because that could have been me and Adam w
Guest guest
I hear ya Chris. Aspergers wasn't even known until the 1990's and I think thats why it seems like there is so much more of it....I really don't think there is , I think its just being recognized sooner and better now. There were a lot of badly behaved kids too when I was growing up and I think a lot of kids and people fell thru the cracks because of a lack of knowledge and awareness of personality disorders, and mental health etc....my brother being one....there was something very wrong with him from a very young age and he ended up killing himself when he was only 33. I think you are right though, if I was still going thru all the trials and tribulations with Adam , my feelings probably would have been hurt by what she said. Its great we can discuss all this stuff here , God knows I wish I'd had someone to talk to when Adam was growing up. hugs brenda Wags! Wags! Wags!
