My son had a horrid reaction to it.. Complete anxiety breakdown

He thought he was having a heart attack.

I do know others who had a good reaction.. So really its up to the doc.. And the child.

Have you tried ritalin? My son does very well on it..

I was hoping to ask if any of your children use a ADHD drug called Straterra to help control the hyperactivity and inattention symptoms and if you are/have been happy with it

My little boy is 7 and has been on Concerta. This has not helped that much and seem to make him very agitated and to masturbate a lot. I get so fed up with the whole thing and really do not want to give him anything if it makes him worse rather than helping him.

Hi.

Our son is on Straterra and Risperdal. That combination seems to be

working for the past 1 1/2 years. Our son was on Straterra at first

(October 2005, 3rd grade). In August/September 2006, the psychiatrist

tried Concerta. That resulted in an increase in aggression and a

suspension. In October 2006 our son was back on Straterra with the

addition of a small dose of Risperdal (which had just been okayed for

use with autism spectrum disorders). Since then, with a few

expections, the combination has worked. Our son is able to focus at

school and has had far fewer outbursts at school... and only one

suspension (maybe two) - see my postings this month about that

suspension.

In other words, yes, Straterra has helped our 11 year old... combined

with a small dose of Risperdal.

My son was on put on Straterra when he was 10 (15yo now). We agreed with this because it was supposed to help him eat better. It was the worst possible change for him/us. He had violent mood swings. He tried to hit his older sister over the head with a baseball bat and it was the first time in his life that he yelled at me. When he came "down" from the meds, he was mortified. He refused to take any meds at all until I told him that we'd go back to Adderall. The doctor tried to get us to wait 30 days to see if things would change after it was into his system but he and I insisted that he be put back on Adderall. He's been on that one particular med for most of his life and it works very well for him. We'd tried Ritilin and Concerta for a time before the Adderall and it just made him lethargic. No dosage change was any better. Not all kids are the same, though, and it

Hi,Straterra caused major depression problems with my DS. He has been on Focalin XR for the past few years and doing fine. He takes Valerian at night to make sure he sleeps and his appetite is never-ending because he is 14. Hope that helps. And, there you go: See how unique our kids are! My son has been

taking Strattera since last summer. It has been successful at helping

him to concentrate and the lone negative component is that he feels

nausea unless he eats breakfast directly beforehand (so of course, he

always does.)

He had taken Concerta previous to this and it was alright too - for

some time - then I noticed that he began to get a bit " teary " so we

stopped all meds during the summer to give his body a rest and began

the Strattera a couple of weeks before school started up in the

Autumn (this was to allow some time to know whether it was a good fit

or not.)

Point is, what works for one person may not work for another. And,

even when it works, the individual is growing and changing so that

same med may not work anymore/dose may need adjusting.

If you see changes in your child that are disturbing, then the

medicine is likely not for him. You will know whether it is a help or

not so follow your instincts. Unfortunately, medicines are trial and

error, but when you find the correct one, it can be a wonderful

enhancer for your child's life.

I would like to know, have most of you who have used Concerta had bad

experiences with it and what were they? My son has been on Concerta

for about 6 months now with Zoloft. It has helped him alot. But

after reading your posts, I'm a little worried about side effects.

We tried Ritalin and it made him a complete zombie, just didn't like

how it made him act. We haven't noticed any aggression with him, it

just seems to calm him down and he is easier to control. He's had a

couple of meltdowns, when he wants something and we won't let him

have it. Just would like to know other's experiences with Concerta.

My son was on cercerta for about a year...I didn't

notice too much difference in him other than he

stopped eating...he was on the xtended tablet. He is

now on adderall XR ....I didn't think there was much

of a difference but when he is not on it, I realize

what good it does do for him....and his friends notice

the difference. He is also on a very small dose of

prozac for depression and a very small dose of xanax

for anxiety. And, he knows and feels the difference.

In fact, if he is going over a certain friends house

and has not taken his pills...he'll ask for them

becuase he doen't want to " annoy " him or the other

kids.. My son does eat on the Adderall XR.

A couple of things- after speaking with a psychiatrist about it at

length I learned a lot about the meds they use for ADD. First of all,

with one exception, they are all pretty much the same exact drug -

methylphenidate. That is the generic form of Ritalin, Concerta,

Metadate, etc. Risperadol is basically HALF of the chemical

combination of the methylphenidate (supposed to only have the working

part with less of the side effect part of the drug.) All of these

entire class of drugs are used to treat ADD and are all

stimulants/controlled substances.

Well, so I asked him what we could do for him that wasn't a stimulant

because the stimulant was giving him extra tics. The only med that is

not a stimulant/controlled substance is Straterra. I asked him why we

didn't have him on that in the first place and here's the reason he

gave me-

It only works for about 50% of kids and there's no way to know who it

will work for and who it won't! Thankfully, it worked for my little

guy! My other son it worked but made him sleepy so we had to give it

to him before bed. Oh, and the tics went away.

Unfortunately it's a trial and error with most of these meds-

especially with our children. If I didn't think that he was

functioning MUCH better on them than without them, I wouldn't have him

taking them at all. After 2 1/2 years I finally got the oldest of the

two completely off meds.

Risperadol is an atypical antipsychotic, and very powerful. Did you mean to say

that Focalin

is half the chem combo of Ritalin? It's minus one isomer.
