just remember that they do have to take "emotional disturbance" into consideration when determining eligibilty...which in the case of Asperger's can mean alot. Pam :)Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com.

OK.. I had my meeting today with the IEP team.... I " m ticked off to say

the least!!! They are wanting to do their own testing to see if he

meets EDUCATIONAL Asperger diagnosis? They are saying that they have

to do this to see if he will qualify for any services! SO it's back to

testing through the school system! Is this normal???? They basically

told me that I am enabling him and giving him something to use as an

excuse!!

Yes, unfortunately, educational testing is often-times done regardless of what medical professional diagnoses you may have. If the AS doesn't affect him in the educational realm then they aren't required by law to provide services. Of course what we, as parents, consider affecting a child educationally and what a school system considers can often-times be quite different. I'd be peeved if someone told me I was enabling my child - imo that was out-of-line for whomever told that to you.

If I were in your shoes I'd start reading up on disability law as it pertains to the educational system - http://www.wrightslaw.com is a good start. Be as informed as you possible can and know your and your child's rights.

Jackie, Please somehow, make sure your son's team doesn't prompt/drill him - just before the school does their testings....AND the evaluator doesn't give him testings with all the things s team was prompting/drilling him with. including social skills, eye contact etc... I found this out just by asking the teachers what are they working on with my son. They explained, and said he is doing much better. then the evaluator tested him and said he did very well!!. The evaluator explained what she tested him on and it was the same things as his team was working on with him. Was that a consequence? So, with that, I had to take my son back to his (team) of doctors. gave the report to the school and still waiting for a response. I also learned, I will NEVER have my son tested on school grounds again. (I will drive him to the evaluators office). Its two easy for the school staff to speak

with the evaluator and give their personal opinion. even though they don't know the child's "LIFE" history, interventions, tutoring, therapy etc... Other parents with children with aspergers said to me. When they get into 5th grade. they want to change their classification so they can drop everything in middle school. What the school said to you, about you enabling him, I've heard this before. stay strong, and if you can, go with an advocate. having someone with you makes a difference, and they can catch things that you might of missed due to being emotional at the meeting. best luck with everything for . They didn't tell me that I was enabling.. they just implied.. saying

that my son didn't have these problems UNTIL AFTER the diagnosis! The

IEP team is just as happy to leave him labeled as Gifted/ADHD because

then they don't have to do anything for him. I was told today that

they will not remove the ADHD label even though I have a report from

the Autism Specialists stating " I feel ADHD is not an apropriate dx at

this time " All symptoms exhibited are a direct result of Aspergers

syndrome!

It's been in trouble so many times already at school and they are NOW

saying that there are no educational problems.. he's just refusing to

do things because I have told him to much information about his

diagnosis.. which is completely UNTRUE!!

I'm currently doing some research because I'm trying to find out what

the time frame is on getting these additional testings done.

Rose,

The problem I have with this.. does well on testing...

maintains better eye contact during the tests.. because they are done

WITH ADULTS!! He also tries harder because he KNOWS it's a test! They

are also trying to tell me that the counseling he was getting last year

was social skills training.. when the counselor was put into place

because told one of the teachers he wished he could kill him

self!! I know for a fact that the counselor that is meeting with him

this year IS doing SST with him because she called to get my permission

to bring a peer in to work with him a few weeks. Most of the testing

they are setting up as already been done or partially done last year

and all came back inconclusive waiting on reports from the doctors I

PAID for him to see! They even said in this meeting " So you are taking

him yourself for speech and OT services " .. to which I politely replied

that he is on a WAITING list for additional testing and services.

I think I went in with some knowledge about what I was talking about

and it caught them off guard. They tried to tell me that HEARS

them just fine and then refuses to do what he is told. My son is not

openly defiant and the problem they describe is one that we have at

home. I told them I know he can HEAR just fine.. but someone his brain

is not processing the information quickly enough.. He's been referred

for Auditory Processing Disorder testing....

I'm just so angry right now because I know I've got to WAIT an even

longer time for them to do these tests and then I'm almost positive

they are not going to do anything that he needs! They still have not

given him any accelerated work.. he's doing 5th grade work and they got

ticked when I told them that was part of the problem!! I said " He's

not on a 5th grade level, so why are you giving him 5th grade work? "

They did not like that comment at all!

Can anyone say Frustration?????

Jackie there are two words that FREAK OUT a school " Due Process " .

Check out your state regulations. You are clearly being verbally

abused by your district. 60 days is what they have but then add on the

allotted time to prepare the report, schedule an IEP and set new

services in place. If you're like me, this will all be done by the

middle of December, Christmas break will follow, and sometime in

January you'll wonder why things aren't in place yet. That's been my

experience.

Illinois has something called CRSA " Community Residential Service

Authority " The CRSA is responsible for identifying and addressing

barriers facing parents, professionals and providers when trying to

get needed services and programs for individuals with a behavior

disorder or a severe emotional disturbance and their family. They were

a HUGE help to me with another son of mine.

Call them to see if your state has something like it. I'd also ask

them about 's Asperger's dx to see if this falls under their

guidelines.

Be very careful threatening a district with Due Process. If the evaluations are not done within the allowed 60 days I would write a letter and ask about when the meeting to discuss the findings will be taking place, cc everyone involved. It should not take 3 months. If it goes beyond the 60 days you can file a state complaint and begin to take action. We need to start exercising our legal rights and hold the districts accountable. OK.. I had my meeting today with the IEP team.... I"m ticked off to say the least!!! They are wanting to do their own testing to see if he meets EDUCATIONAL Asperger diagnosis? They are saying that they have to do this to see if he will qualify for any services! SO it's back to testing through the school system! Is this normal???? They basically told me that I am enabling him and giving him something to use as an excuse!!Jackie

THis is a GREAT aritcle!!!! I too think the school is put off that I

am knowledgeable about my son's issues! I took a copy of the

" Unlocking the Puzzle " booklet and laid in the counter and invited them

to read it or just take a look. I told them that it was a quick easy

read that would describe my son completely.. it was as if the book had

been written about HIM! I also told them that I planned to add

's distinct traits and signs to the columns of the book for easy

reference. Do you know that the only one that picked that book up was

the Speech Therapist!! She knows my son(just from passing in the hall)

and as she was flipping through the book she was smiling and nodding

her head!!! NONE of the others in the room.. which included the

Special Ed teacher.. which is also my son's Gifted Teacher, The school

physchologist, The Regular ED teacher and the Principal even so much as

TOUCHED the freakin book!!!! I also told them the booklet had some

wonderful references in the back especially the Tony Attwood book which

I had been able to read over the summer.. they all looked at me like I

was crazy.. EXCEPT the Speech Therapists.. which agreed with me that

Tony Attwood was a well know authority in the field of Autism!!!! I

also told them about a FREE training that is conducted here with

colloboration of TRIAD (autism research center) and the Board of

education. It's open to parents, teachers, professionals.. whoever and

it's FREE... it's next friday! I told them that as long as I could

find someone to pick up my kids then I WOULD be attending so that I

could gain more knowledge about Aspergers and what services my son will

need! No one even said anything... EXCEPT for the Speech therapist!!!!

URGHHHH

I do plan on printing a copy of this article and attaching it to my

follow up letter! They didn't use the word " enabler " at the meeting

but I FELT that they thought I was making excuses for my son! I WAS

told that didn't seem to have all of these problems BEFORE the

DX!!!!! So in reality they were saying that I had CREATED these

problems!!

My son won't even get his books out to do the work this year... but

like I said he is VERY smart and is bored and he does not feel that he

should be made to do work that is beneath him!!!! I DON'T BLAME HIM

ONE BIT.. DX or not!!! They should be advancing my son and NOT HOLDING

HIM BACK!!!

Bastards......excepts the ST!!!!Isn't it amazing,,,,that because some people are "professionals" in a certain field, they believe they have nothing to learn from "non-professionals".
