my son, Connor ( 5 months ) has an appointment at U of M to be sized for a helmet on this coming Tuesday. What are the differences between the helmet and the DOC band? My husband and I can't seem to find anything on the web to help us make the decision.

Thank you,

, and Connor

- University of Minnesota? Find out the name of the helmet? Some call it a helmet and it could be a STAR Band or the Craniocap. Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare Gillette up there does the Craniocap.

Helmet is passive, the head grows and forms "into" the helmet. The bands have a foam inner liner and apply pressure and allow room for expansion. Or it could be a design made by your local orthotics person. Post location and maybe someone in the area can help you out!

I'm in the La Crosse area and have family in Eau and Woodbury!

,

Welcome! Glad to have you here!

If you go to the files section of the home page you

will see a folder that is labeled " types of

treatment " . In there you find different styles of

band and helmets. Also there are tons of adorable

baby pics sporting helmets or bands.

Good luck!

, please visit the link below my name. Once there, click FAQ. There is a little info there on the differences.

Hey !

I lied!!! There's nothing there about differences!! I will be sure get started on the TYPES OF TREATMENT page ASAP, tho!

I think Kaycee (?) gave a pretty good explanation in a previous post.

I'm sure someone here who has the DOCband will give you the link to cranial

technologies (the company that makes the band) and they have a webpage you

can browse. There is also the STARband which is made by Orthoamerica - they

also have a webpage if I am not mistaken. You will probably have a hard time

finding info about the helmet. That is a very individual thing - it is not

standardized and is not marketed like the band. The helmets vary from state

to state and even within states! Here is my understanding of the difference:

The bands tend to be more dynamic than the helmets. The bands apply direct

pressure, the helmets (at least the ones I know about) allow the head to grow

into them thus remolding the head. The helmets tend to be less dynamic. My

daughter has been using a locally made helmet and we have had good success.

With the age of your child you should have good luck with either device.

Sometimes (but not always) the helmets are a little less expensive since they

are not marketed. HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: Screen your orthotist!!!

That is the person who makes the difference in getting good correction for

your child. Without a good orthotist your chances of correction go way down.

With a good, experienced and skilled orthotist (and very watchful parents)

any device CAN be effective. I hope this info helps and I am sure you will

get tons of good suggestions and hints!!

Welcome to the group - I'm glad you found us!!!
