Hi Cheryl -

My daughter, 11 was diagnosed at 8. She sounds very similar to you

Chloe except in the math department!

A good place to start is with a Developmental Pediatrician.

If there is a children's hospital near you, that is where you will

probably find one.

I hope this helps as a start.

From what you describe, IMHO, it is worth checking out. You have

different routes you can take for getting her evaluating.

You can try to get a special ed evaluation through your school

district. It is possible you live in one of those school districts

that are bad about providing services to smart kids with LDs or may

just one with a poor special ed dept. In any case, this route will

take some time, as you'll have to convince them that she needs it and

then the process usually takes a few months. If you do go that route,

the first step is to find out from your school district who you make

the request to. Then you must submit, in writing, that you want the

evaluation and exactly what you want considered.

You can also have her evaluated yourself, through your medical

insurance or out-of-pocket, whatever the necessity or your preference.

Since autism has so many facets, you may need several different types

of evaluations. A neuropsych eval tests for cognitive issues such as

ADHD, social cognition, executive dysfunction. An OT/PT/Speech

evaluation (Physical Medicine) tests for motor skill issues and

language issues, including the pragmatic language problems that HFA

and AS kids have. You can also get tests specifically for autism that

test very specifically for the unusual communication issues etc. that

autistic people have.

The " where " can be a children's hospital or a private clinic or

practice. The key is to make sure you go to someone that is an autism

spectrum specialist. I don't live in Oregon, so I can't help you with

that.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hi Cheryl,

Start with your pediatrician, some can test for autism (GARS) and some

can even diagnose. If not, then they can refer you to a specialist

who will.

Cheryl,

I too live in Oregon (Portland area) and have a daughter with

Autism. I would recommend that you check out the autism-oregon

group if you have not already. They post a lot of state/area

specific information that you should find very helpful!
