Guest guest
and/or Robin Lemke said:"I personally don't think that certain IEP's can't work unless there are qualified and dedicated aides in the classroom to help implement the IEP along with, or even for, the teacher."At my last IEP meeting this year for my fifth grader, we decided he would have an aide for everything at beginning of next year, including lunch, until we see how he is doing. He had a 1:1 for two months after a rather significant event, until I put him on homebound for the last month so we could do a radical med change. After we talked and talked at this meeting, I just summed it up and said "I want teachers to be able to do their job." But that's all that was written in the notes. On the off chance that anyone ever reads those notes again, I wanted to make sure that it didn't sound like I thought the teachers were incompetent...just overworked. So I sent this to everyone:-----Could you please do me a favor and make a slight addition to the discussion notes from the 5/24 meeting for ph?It says I commented, "I want teachers to be able to do their job" at the end of the meeting. When I said this, I believe everyone at the table understood my acknowledgment that ph's needs in the classroom do require a considerable amount of attention. This is to keep him focused and productive, and to manage or address his behavior. My concern was that serving the total educational needs of an entire class can be difficult for a teacher who is also solely responsible for ph. We had addressed this most recently with a TSA, and I feel strongly that this is an appropriate move. This is for the benefit of not only ph, but his classmates, and the teacher. I have great respect for the amount of work that ph's teachers have. And I was expressing my desire that they have the necessary support so that they can fulfill their mission for all students in their classes.Could my comment be amended to reflect my concern that ph requires a great deal of individual attention? Also, having an aide in the classroom is an important component towards ensuring a more proper learning environment for the whole class.-----So the notes were changed to: I want teachers to be able to do their job. I know how much attention ph requires in the classroom and I think having an aide dealing only with him will allow the classroom teacher to focus on the needs of the entire class. See, I am not just looking out for my own child, but all the students...not to mention the teachers!Jackie
