Donna, what is DRV? Our son is 23 and he is getting ready to enter Job

Corps. There are no college programs that he would fit into, he's very

weak performing academically and all the Voc Rehab programs seem to

emphasize welding, or car repair, construction, all areas of weakness

and disinterest for him. What has his school done in terms of

transitioning?

I live in Colorado and have a 19 yr. old w/o Aspergers diagnosis, he has dyslexia, ADHD and his IQ around 73. He just graduated in June and is currently using services from the SWAP program which is part of the DVR and the school system. I feel the program is helpful for my son, but I also feel my son still requires more than DVR can provide. I feel my 10 yr. old with the Aspergers diagnosis will benefit more from DVR when he is old enough, than my 19 yr. old. DVR does have a great set up for the disabled population, but the disabled individual must have the desire to follow through with the services offered. I hope this info helps you some.

Peace,

My dd is 20, no job yet and is horrified by the idea of working with other people. LOL She graduated high school 2 yrs ago and wants to attend university. She definitely has the smarts for it but the classroom stress is so hard on her that she can't bring herself to apply, plus lack of finances are another big hindrance.

My dh wants her to get a part time job because she isn't going to school, but she won't hear of it. He does understand her and is an Aspie himself but he wants to push her a little because she has a tendancy to underestimate herself and what she is capable of. Makes for lots of stress for sure, as I am stuck in the middle between the 2 adult Aspies.

Life is never boring around here. LOL

Your son's IEP team or case manager should make a referral to Voc Rehab Services for your son. Also, make sure that employment is part of his Transition Plan and that clear goals are written for him regarding employment and training. Pam :)Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL.com.

My son just turned 18, has at least one more year of school left.

He has been going to a special school for 5 years so has lost a

lot of the academics taught. He could not function in vocational

school either right now. They have told me, if our school

district graduates him, I can have them HOLD his diploma and

any training he gets, they would have to pay for. We are

maybe looking at ONE class in vocational school in maybe a

year or two, maybe a computer graphic arts class, but I don't

know if he'll even be able to handle a 2 hour regular class.

I am hoping so. He sometimes talks about getting a part time

job now, but I know he can't handle that. We may start with

volunteering a couple of hours a week soon, maybe at an animal

shelter. Some one told me the vet who boards in our area has

volunteers who play with the boarded pets, and he loves animals

so he might like that.

Hi Roxanna,

Our kids have had some severe adverse reactions to meds, so we end up steering clear of them, so no our dd hasn't tried any meds for anxiety.

We checked into evening classes 2 years ago when she first graduated and there was not much to offer then. I will check into the nightime courses again though as that changes so they may have expanded that more in the last 2 years. Thanks for the reminder Roxanna.

I have my doubts that she would be disciplined enough to do online classes as I know when she was in HS we managed to get our dh as her mentor for an online class in Computer Tech, which is very his training and education is. He has more experience and training than the teacher did. Well she very nearly failed the course because they both kept procrastinating. LOL

She actually completed the bulk of the course work in 2 wks and on the last day of class, she wrote 10 tests in 1hr. The teacher was in shock. He ended up standing there as she was finishing them so quickly and he had to input the passwords so she could start the next test. He had never seen anyone do that much in one day and score so well. He was surprised and impressed. I think she got 86% for the course, but the stress was horrendous. Plus I have homeschooled my dd and she was the same way then. We ended up doing the bulk of her schoolwork over the summer because she procrastinated so badly, and that was no fun.

We have considered part time courses so she would be able to have more of a break and as of right now that seems to be our best solution.
