Guest guest
Tami- research the Prevnar a little closer. There was a big story on the news about Prevnar and how physicinas are telling you it is to prevent ear infections and that is not the case at all. It is used to treat prevent strep infections and such. It is not an ear infection vaccine. There is contradictory reports out there regarding the vaccine- I had my son vaccinated though. Guest guest
FYI, I've read a few things that indicated Prevnar may *cause* ear infections. G has never had an ear infection and we did not get the Prevnar vaccine.

Plagiocephaly Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2001 11:51 AM Subject: Ear infections & Prevnar? Hi All!I have not been posting much recently here (below is why!), but I wanted to ask those of you whose infants/toddlers got ear infections if the Prevnar vaccine worked for your babies? got his first ear infection back in Dec at 15 months....and last month he got a REALLY bad one in both ears. We had to take him to an after-hours clinic on a Sat. nite....the Dr. prescribed an antiobiotic, but it wasn't strong enough to kill the infection in both ears...so we were back about 10 days later to our ped, who confirmed it hadn't resolved the infection, but he also had effusion this time, too. After a 2nd round of antibiotics, he seems fine now. We go back Friday am to the ped and I wanted to see if we should get him vaccinated with Prevnar.... Those of you who have gotten the vaccine, did it work? I was just curious to see if it was something worth looking into, because I'm sure it is pricey (we got the meningitis vaccine $90! because of a meningitis outbreak here), and have heard it isn't a cure-all. Any thoughts? Should I wait until after the 3rd infection (and hope he doesn't get another one!)? I know, it really is only 2 infections! I sure feel for those of you who have had it much rougher with many more than that!! :(The biggest irony of this is that (no plagio) had 2 ear infections at 6 and 9 months(during nursing!)and hasn't had any since. (had plagio), and didn't get any ear infections until 4 months after nursing and finishing the DOC bands! I would have expected HIM to get the ear infections when his ears were so off! I know, all kids are different, but it sure isn't what I thought would be happening! Tami 9/99 (DOC bands 3/00-8/00) 7/97Tulsa, OK
Guest guest
Becky, Thanks for the info...I thought I heard the same sort-of thing...on the news or in the paper....if the bacteria causing the infection wasn't the same one in the vaccine...it wouldn't work. I guess this is a little more involved than I thought! I think the reason why I wasn't offered it was because I was breastfeeding. Who knows? I guess I'll just try to do a search on Prevnar on (what else?) ! Thanks for the input....with the two little ones...it is hard to even watch the news, let alone remember what was said about what! Guest guest
Thanks! I am SO GLAD I posted about this! I think we are going to pass on the vaccine, but I will still ask my ped about it. You guys are the BEST! Thanks again! Guest guest
Tami, We did get the prevnar vaccination and we have had numerous ear infections starting at about 8 months. 's ear infections usually last through about 3 different antibiotics before they are cured. We've had three infections that have each required 2-3 rounds of antibiotics before they were clear! As the ped explained it only kills some of the strains of bacteria that cause ear infections. (I think that is what he said) Our insurance pays for prevnar as part of routine immunizations so I'm not sure of the cost. Guest guest
Hey Tami- did you do research on the vaccine? I want to do some but I thought if you did some I could save some time. Let me know. If you haven't had time when I do the search I will send you the links. Beck
Guest guest
Tami, I heard the same thing as Beck - my doctor flat out told me it was not preventive for ear infections, but it was to prevent other infections. I would definitely research, and ask your doctor questions. ( did get it.) -- --
Guest guest
Hi there! has had the Prevnar vaccine from the beginning and I must say that he was fine until about 8 months and I was so happy we had gotten the shot! But then when the first ear infection hit, I was upset, but we treated it with antibiotics and all was well. 2 weeks later, he had another infection - this time in both ears. Took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear it up! The Prevnar only protects against certain infections - so there is still a good chance of getting an infection. But, I figure if it blocks (73% I think) most infections, then it is worth it!!! has been pulling at his ears and putting his finger in his ears for almost 2 months now. I keep taking him to the dr every week, thinking it is an infection - just to hear, " he does have clear fluid in the ears, but it should drain on its own! " Helmet therapy shifts the bones above the ears, changing the shape of the ear canal as it moves. My drs think that this is what is causing the fluid backup. So - that may have something to do with it also! It is a hard call whether to get the shot or not. I am very glad I did and I think it is helping . But a friend of mine ends up in the drs office it seems every 2 weeks for an ear infection and she did get the shot - and her son does not have plagio. I really think it depends on the child and mother's instincts! Kim, NC -----Original Message----- From: twarner@...
