Guest guest
Hi Tami! My son got the Prevnar vaccine starting at his 6 month check up. Guest guest
My son got his first Prevnar vaccination at his 6 month check up. He is almost 9 months, and has never had an ear infection. I still nurse him, but he also gets formula too. Guest guest
According to a representative of the FDA that was on a local news report last week, Prevnar was NEVER tested by the FDA as a prevention for ear infections. This vaccine is actually used to try to prevent some forms of meningitis. I don't know where all the ear infection info came from, but our local news did a two-part series on Prevnar last week sometime, where they stated that Prevnar was never intended for use to prevent ear infections. The impression I got from the FDA rep during the broadcast was that not only was it not INTENDED to prevent ear infections, it was never tested to do that either. Our ped flat out refuses to even give this vaccine. He says it's still too new for him to feel comfortable with. I mentioned the news report I had seen, and he had seen it too. He said babies only had around a 6% less chance of getting an ear infection when they get this vaccine - to me, that's NOT enough to even risk getting it! Guest guest
Becky, Thanks for the info! I had no idea there was such a controversy...and it is interesting that did get the vaccine for meningitis, so maybe he DID get the Prevnar for what it actually was tested for. ???? Now I am more confused than ever. I'll ask more about this in the morning! I wonder if that has anything to do with getting a worse ear infection (both ears, 2 rounds of antibiotics) this last time. He had his first ear infection in early Dec. at 15 months, got the meningitis (Prevnar????) vaccine just before Christmas, and now has had the worst ear infection??? Hmmmm... I'll probably be asking questions for at least a half- hour!!!
