Guest guest
Yes, my son gained weight from medications too. But also he eats all the time. He even gets up during the night when we are asleep and eats. He walks whenever he can, most of the time in Walmart when the weather is bad. I know sometimes he eats just to be eating cuz he will have had a large supper and there's no way he could be hungry. We may have to start locking the pantry, some foods we have to leave in our bedroom over night just so he won't eat it during the night, nothing is safe. lol If you could get your son to walk or do some kind of sport it may help him. Good luck, I wish our kids didn't have this problem, with everything else it's just not fair. My son is 18 and is only 5 feet 8 inches, I wish he were taller too and maybe his weight wouldn't be so bad. pj From: yadayada65 <donpark@...> Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 6:35:32 PMSubject: ( ) Weight issues/growth issues Hi, my son is 10 and he gained some weight from being on meds. He's off now but he struggles with the weight. Anyone else have this issue with their Aspie and any suggestions? Also, within the last year I noticed all the other boys his age becoming taller and taller and my son...well, isn't. Anyone have similar issues? Thanks. Guest guest
Patti, Are you sure that you don't live at my house with my son. We have done the locking things up before and may have to start again. And we keep food in the bedroom, too. I even have a small refrigerator in my bedroom. My son has an underactive thyroid as a result of taking lithium for the bipolar that he has in addition to Aspergers. But part of the eating is the carbohydrate craving that goes with the bipolar disorder. Guest guest
Yes, Yes, Yes! My son is 13 and has gained about an inch in height and about 45lbs last year, he is so chubby now I don't hardly recognize him!! He also has not started puberty...the doc is sending him to a pediatric endocrinologist so we'll see what happens here. He weight gain started after coming down off the Vyvanse and then took off in leaps and bounds when he started the Abilify and now he is on Lamictal and I haven't seen his appetite slow down yet!! My son is the shortest kid in his grade!! I feel sooo sorry for what he has to deal with from the other kids on a daily basis from it. What meds has he been on? Any signs of puberty yet...probably too soon right now, huh? -Sancy > > Hi, my son is 10 and he gained some weight from being on meds. He's off > now but he struggles with the weight. Guest guest
Hi all, regarding Abilify. I was on it for resistant depression and gained like 50 pounds. They will not come off, and I have been off of it for 8 months now. It also raised my cholesterol terribly. It has still not come down to pre:abilify level. I do not know WHY they are prescribing this medication to children. It is a bug in my you know what. They do NOT know the LONG TERM effects of giving this stuff to pediatric patients. BTW, it really helped my depression, but I am not willing to be their guinea pig anymore. LJ > > > > Hi, my son is 10 and he gained some weight from being on meds. Guest guest
A while back this came up, one of my friends has a child with Prader Wily Syndrome, some of the kids have poor muscle tone and an insatiable appetite, apparently a lot of the kids display Asperger like traits, fixed routine, play etc so there does seem to be an over lap, I just wonder if there is an over lap the other way too, that some Aspie kids have the poor muscle tone and big appetite. My son is the flip side he is 7 and just under 3 stone (40lbs), my mum got ill thinking we were starving him and got the doctor and police involved last year, things are just starting to get back to normal. Guest guest
My girl has also a weight problem since she has been on medication for depression and for epilepsy. Her nutritionist advised me to put a lock in the refrigerator or just buy fresh vegetables and fruits. I do not buy food containing sugar and carbo and she is still overweight but her weight has not increase for a little while.I rather see her fat than having panic attacks. Guest guest
My son was always chubby even before starting medication. He does eat a lot, but I think it's related to his anxiety, he always has something in his mouth. If he's not eating, he is chewing on his shirt or his fingers. I try to offer some healthy foods, but he just can't eat them, he gags or gets grossed out by a lot of things. He's pretty limited in his diet. So we encourage exercise, go for walks in the summer even when he complains. I am hoping someday he will want to do it for himself. If you see your son isn't growing, you definitely need to talk to your doctor. Also ask your husband when he "sprouted." Maybe he was a later bloomer too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suzanne suzmarkwood@...
