Guest guest
No, there are no special requirements, other than I would suggest you be registered and / or licensed in your state as a daycare provider! Then, you can sign up with the agencies as specialized in autism / aspergers and / or other special needs. I do have that listed, and have never gotten specifically an aspergers child from it but have gotten an autistic child (but I knew the parents so that was a little different). I do list it though, and have had plenty of troubled children and / or difficult ones come through my door (I am sure because I can handle them!). So, there really is NOT anything special you do to watch them (you can get paid more through our state if they are special needs, and parents have done stuff to get paid that PROVIDED YOUR ARE BEING PAID BY THE STATE FOR CARE OF THAT CHILD----so I would look in to that, too). It often is not much more, but some. Otherwise, YOU PERSONALLY can not charge ANY MORE FOR SPECIAL NEEDS THAN ANY OTHER DAYCARE CHILD because that is Discrimination (may not be right because they require soooooo much more time but that is the way it is). Hope that helps. Ruthie ( ) Care for our Aspies Hello,It's been awhile since I've posted here, but I've been thinking about our kiddos and I have started coming up with an idea. I would like to know what some of you might think....My son just turned 9 at the beginning of this month. Raising my son has been a challenge, and I'm amazed at how much I've learned. I feel like I've learned way more from him than he's learned from me! I've learned to open my eyes and my mind to those who are different. I have a soft spot in my heart for children who have special needs. I have become good at relating with children of all types. It's amazing how much has happened over the last 9 years. One of the problems that I've had as a parent has been the lack of daycare. There are many daycares out there, but few who have enough knowledge of Aspergers Syndrome to understand our kids' feelings and needs. I want to help more than I have been able to before. I am considering a career change... actually I've been considering it for awhile now.I need to know what the requirements are to care for children with Aspergers Syndrome or who have other behavioral disabilities. Does there need to be a special license besides a basic child care license? What types of services are available for our kids that non-professional parents have been able to provide? Are there services that are not available that could become available if someone were to get it started? What would it be like to have more daycare settings that are built and suited for children like ours? Where could I go to find the information that I need?I am only one person, and by myself I would have to start out small, but a start is all I would need. Any thoughts, opinions and suggestions would be a help to me. Feel free to email me or reply right here in the group.
