As tough as this has to be for you though, couldn't it also help explain more what's going on with your son? When you have answers and know better what you're dealing with, then you can move forward with the treatments needed to make things better. I know part of loving our children so much is also grieving the "what if", but sometimes things that seem daunting and unmanageable can actually turn into real opportunities for growth and answers and maybe even eventual peace. The thing I found while researching Bipolar is that there is no trigger for it. In AS there are triggers for what some would term are erratic behaviors. Watch the behaviors and see if you can find triggers. Because AS is a neurological disorder this would be something external that they can't control the internal for themselves because of the external situation. Bipolar is biological regardless of the internal/external things going on around them. Sometimes the triggers can be really hard to see. Like too much noise but they're not covering their ears, ridgidity that causes them to seem like they're losing their minds because they HAVE to finish the thought or what they've started and flip out when they can't, transitions that aren't obvious...etc. I'm sorry I don't know the whole story and perhaps you've previously listed what has been going on. He has mostly good days with his meds helping. Ablify has really helped with the mood swings. Please help this comfort you in these scary times. It would be helpful to feel like we had answers. Unfortunately, the psychiatrist visit just left us with dozens of scary questions. The initial shock of finding these things out will send you for a big loop. But once you give yourself some time, try to consider that all of this is information that can help you help him.
