Thanks for the website for the letter to write to the teacher-what a

big help. One more question...have you ever requested a teacher by

writing a letter to the principal? I was going to do that this

summer b/c there is only 1 teacher that we feel would be good for my

son next year. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Yes, if you want to do this, do it asap! My kids are already put into classes for the fall.

It depends on your school district. In our district, we can write a

letter requesting a teacher with certain characteristics, but we

cannot request a teacher by name. So in our district, you just have

to word your letter " just right " to exclude the teachers you don't

want and narrow it down to the one you want.

However, in my sister's district, they are able to request by name.

Both districts, though, do not guarantee.

You might go in and hand deliver your letter to the principal and sit

down and talk with her for a few minutes.

I have a great relationship with our principal and can do that.

Hi, what I did was write a letter to the principal and stated info

about my son and that I wanted the school to consider this when

assigning his teachers, to assign him to those who would best work

with him and his Plan.

I actually called the principal a couple weeks after mailing to ask if

he had received my letter and was my request " any problem? " This way

when he (of course) said " no problem... " then I felt I had something

to fall back on if my son's teachers turned out to not be a good fit

or didn't follow his Plan.

Quick answer (and typing!)

Most of our teachers are being switched around and even the

school didn’t know who was going to be here in the fall so we couldn’t

request a teacher. Plus we didn’t know the teachers well enough to know

who would be a good fit. ’ K teacher is one who helps

decide what class a child goes too so I’m relying a lot on her. Plus it

was said at our last IEP meeting about him getting a teacher that would be able

to work with him.

So even if you can’t request a teacher definitely write a

letter stating what you need in a teacher and how important it is for your son.

Also I’ve been getting a few handouts ready to give to our

teacher next year.

I have that letter of introduction from OASIS. I also have

another http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/teachers_guide.html

that I’m using as a guide.

I’ve also printed out the “Balancing the Tray”

article that was mentioned on here before. http://www.assew.org/articles/balancing_the_tray.htm

And I’ve purchased the “Unlocking the Puzzle”

book that was also mentioned here before. http://aspergertips.com/pageONE.html

We are also planning on meeting with her/him before classes actually

start. I think it’s important that see the classroom he’s

going to be in, meets the teacher and is told what his schedule is going to be

like before there are 20 other kids in the room. We will find out who the

teacher is at registration (for us 2wks before school starts) and the principal

already knows that we’re planning a meeting with the teacher and said

that it would be no problem.

Good luck to you,

~A

Oh yeah,,,,,and they should be totally for it!!!! I would hope that they could see the "better" placement. Nothing wrong with it at all.
