This sounds awful, I know. I used to "not want to be mean" and rationalize with them to take their medicine. Now,,,,,,,,if they won't take it,,,,I waste no time. I'd hold him and pour it right down. I'll see if any of those work with my son. He's just so hyper I have trouble getting him to watch anything without his having to jump up and run back and forth while watching. When his older brother was little I only found out when he was sick if I touched him for some reason and he felt hot. He would go tearing through the house with a fever of 102. His sister on the other hand couldn't work up the energy to get out of bed if her temperature got up to 99.

I would let him run around too (there really doesn't seem to be a choice unless I want to get after a sick child all day) but my husband isn't as flexable. He had to stay in bed when he was sick so he feels our son should at least have to stay calm and quiet. Not easy for a child. I'll have to see if I can hold him down and use a medicine dropper. He's not really had any experience with taking medicine or being sick so it's hard on him. He was only sick one time until he started school.

We started crushing

chewables and putting them in Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream for a…..The

mint flavor seems to hide any chewable flavor and the Chips disguise the

crushed tablets! I only do a teaspoon or at the most 2 teaspoons of ice

cream…so I know she gets all the meds!

When Dylan was younger and sick, he would play quite a bit of video

games, to be honest. If he started getting a little hyper on the game

system, we'd stop and play Uno together or I would rub/scratch his back while

he watched some TV. Dylan used to be on a nebulizer three times a day

from about 2.5-3.5 years of age to prevent asthma so there were many times when

he was sick! At that very young age, he didn't have video games but we

played lots of I Love Toy Trains videos and had lots of back rubs and fingernails

lightly scratching his back. I'd read to him too.

Dylan HATES liquid medicine. It's been that way forever. I

used to have to hold him down but when he found out about pills he could

swallow at the age of 4, he was all over it. Doctors/physicians would be

surprised when I bypassed the syrup whatever (even quick melts) and would ask

for pills. He never had any problems swallowing them.

I used a syringe to give my son his medication, it was over with before he could put up a fuss. I'd put it to one side of his mouth way in the back and squirt it down his throat. His doctor would probably give you one. pj

I would let him run around too (there really doesn't seem to be a choice unless I want to get after a sick child all day) but my husband isn't as flexable. He had to stay in bed when he was sick so he feels our son should at least have to stay calm and quiet. Not easy for a child. I'll have to see if I can hold him down and use a medicine dropper. Sorry just thought of something. Sometimes cold meds can have a reaction

To our children.. Excessively hyper. You may want to look into that.. Along with any other drug interactions with meds he might be on.

Also.. Kids just.. Well bounce back faster than us. ( sorry I haven't had time to read all the responses sorry if it is duplicated.. Or perhaps off topic.)

I can't even get the cold medicine in him to see if he does react in any way to it. Since he was a baby, the only medicine I have been able to get in him was one asprin on one occasion. That's not counting his risperadall that I can actually hide in his orange juice.

We just got a syringe with the aspirator we had to buy. I'll have to see if I can hold on to him long enough to try that. For only being six he is very strong.

You may have tried this already, but did you let him pick out his own flavor medicine? Sometimes my kids are more agreeable when they get to pick the flavor. Also, I have told them, "Medicine does not always taste great but we have to take it to help our bodies get over the bug." Get some popcicles and let him know he can have one as soon as he takes his medicine. Sometimes pairing it with a good thing can help too.

Once Dylan was old enough to ask (about 3), I'd give him the option "You can stand here and take the medicine real quick or Mommy will have to hold you down to do it. Which do you want?" Sometimes he would stand there, but most of the time I would have to hold him down. Eventually, a few times, he even ASKED me to hold him down! Dylan is real sensitive about consistencies of things. Mushy, runny, gooey, not for him. He doesn't eat sauces, gravies, dips, etc... There are very few exceptions. I think this was part of the reason why he didn't like medicine either. Sucked, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

as far s cough medicine goes....honey has been proven

to be a good cough suppressant, plus it tastes good!

Give that kid (assuming he is over a year) a teaspoon

of honey to lick and maybe some hot teawith honey in

it and see what happens! Tell him its good for his

cough too, alot I think is what we believe will help

us.

As far as settling down...thats just pure kid. Mine

can be sick and wild but if he has a fever...thats

what puts him on the couch willingly for rest, it zaps

him.

My nt daughter, now 15 used to get a cough syrup

called Endal..they dont make it anymore I dont think.

It was awesome, it knocked her OUT! ha We used to

call it end all....end all fussing, end all whining,

etc

It was probably horribly unsafe. OTC stuff just made

her hyper if I recall correctly. But she has always

My AS son though, hates all medicine, bubblegum

flavored or not, always has. He will take it but it

takes some convinceing and cheering on and making sure

he has a yummy drink for a chaser. Poor kid. SoI

only give him cough meds when absolutely

necessary..otherwise I try to stay natural and let it

ride itself out, lots of fluids rest and honey usually

do the trick. He will drink hot tea by the potful so

that helps too.
