Guest guest
After reading 's book, and after another failed attempt at SCD (my guy is so texture sensitive to food and self limiting!) we decided to add back gluten and casein with enzymes. He had been on the gfcf diet for over 2 yrs., and give or take a new snack here and there, has basically eaten the same 6 foods the entire time; gfcf pancakes, french fries, chicken nuggets, pretzels, rice bars and soy crisps. UHG! Well, after 3 wks. SCD (and improvement in eye contact firmer stools, but behavioral nightmare during feeding times!), we went back to gfcf. That was when it really became apparent how reactive he was to rice and potatoes, runny poops for 2 wks. when back on his old food. We began zymeprime and added back oat and barley with no reaction good or bad, but it was nice to add a few new foods to his diet. Finally I decided to bite the bullet and add back gluten and casein with the AFP peptizide. We are on day 4! So my amazement is this~ No obvious reaction to the foods themselves. No rashes, sleep disruptions, or behavioral problems. He is a little stimmy and a little OCD (but we are moving in a week and our house is 3/4 packed!!!), and he is definetely a little more hyper, but I have to say it is a happy demeanor-hyper.. really enjoying rough play, etc. Secondly, we are having big yeast/bacteria diarreah.. I took him off his RX's (always rotating nystatin, diflucan and flagyl) over a week ago and when we added the AFP, we got those lovely dead fish diapers. I was actually thrilled! So we still are having very messy diapers, though I must say their consistency isn't much different than the past yrs. I have the POSTER GUT KID! So I am sure it will be a long while before we get to true gut health. Heck, I think we probably have 2 yrs worth of rice and potatoes rotting in his colon, so it will probably take months to even clean him out!! Regardless, we are beyond ecstatic that he has already allowed 3 new food into his diet. I can't believe that he can eat regular food. As we conquer the texture issues, life is going to look a little normal again. I don't (well, I know) I wouldn't have attempted this without reading Enzymes for Autism. We had tried enyzmes on 3 other occassions over the past 2 yrs. on the diet and I always assumed he didn't tolerate them. As I now understand more of the process, and can visibly attain that the gluten and casein are causing no reactions, it is easy to sit back and watch him ride out these first few weeks. My son is 3.6 yrs. dx severe asd at 20 mos. We have done much of the DAN protocol for 2 yrs. He is non verbal ( a few words prompted mostly with finally some great jargon). We are making progress, he is relating to his family, and very much in our world, but delay wise, we have a long way to go! I hope the enzymes help to finally address his gut issues, as I know in my heart the sing song dance with yeast and bacteria has masked most of our gains from all interventions (including a year of chelation, LDN, MB12...etc.) Thank you!!! and Ty
