I take caltrate with D and add magnesium. The vitamin D and magnesium help

the calcium to be absorbed.

According to Jodi's doctors Tums is not enough. She takes three calicum

supplement tables a day. Your doctor has not talk to you about this? Very

important because AIH can cause many bone problems. Genny/Jodi's Mom

Genny,

Unfortunately, my doctors are not always forthcoming with a lot of

information. I learned about the bone problems of prednisone over

the Internet and started taking Tums on my own. Last Fall, I asked

about a bone density scan since I've been on prednisone for 10

years. Also, my mom was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis. Both

my primary doc and gastro weren't concerned because I am heavy set

(even more so with prednisone). In addition to the Tums, I drink at

least 1 8oz glass of nonfat milk a day, so I was a little surprised

my calcium was low.

Saw in another of your posts a comment about platelet level. My

platelets average between 50-75,000. When I had my original liver

biopsy, they gave me platelets before the procedure. I have had

probably a dozen clotting time tests performed over the last 5

years. My doctors have explained to me that my spleen is enlarged

and is consuming my platelets. I wear a medic alert necklace which

tells people I have AIH, varices, and poor clotting in the event I am

in an accident and need immediate care.

I read the emails on this group regularly but only post occasionally

since I still work full time.

I take 1500 mgs per day with vitamin D because of the prednisone. My

rheumatologist is making noise about a bone density scan in the near

future. I drink plenty of milk and eat yogurt daily so I'm not too

worried about my bones yet.

I heard on ther radio a few days ago that Tums was really not a good source

of calcium because calcium needs an acidic environment and tum s neutralizes

that, thus defeating the purpose. Just food for thought.

Jen

P.S. My Gastro told me to take 1500 mg a day (calcium). I just try to eat

calcium rich foods and don't take pills.

  • 5 years later...

My NT daughter is on a dairy-free trial to see if her chronic ear

infections go away. She's had 3 in six weeks! She was feeling very

lucky at the health food store today getting some yummy new snacks and

drinks to try. My question for her (as well as my dev. delayed son I

normally do research on) is what kind of calcium supplement is

recommened for preschoolers? Both kids are about 40 pounds, she is 4,

he is 3. Ronan is GFCF, preservative, dye, salicytic and phenol-free.

Fiona is CF, dye and limited preservative-free. Any ideas?

I'm looking to purchase some prenatals from Freeda's site for me since

I'm dragging lately. I am trying to stay healthy and limit the

cravings (deli sandwiches with the works are SO yummy these days and

I'm only 1/2 way through this pregnancy). My doctor prescribed

Foricet (sp?) for my crazy headaches--feeling woozy like I'm about to

fall over). I filled the script but am going to look up the pros and

cons of taking it while pregnant.

Thanks,

My son takes CalCitrate, he too is sensitive to all of those things, and he

started taking this when he was almost 5. It took 10 different calcium

supplements before we landed on one that worked for us, very expensive to test

them all out. This one is ascorbyl Palmitate (Vit. C) and Calcium citrate

(calcium). We did a lot of research prior to dosing because my son was getting a

prescription calcium supplement and he still had osteopenia, which led to a

broken leg. So, keep in mind that no matter how good the supplement, there are a

few things required to make sure the body utilizes the calcium. Ours comes in a

gelatin capsule, and there are no other ingredients. Ours is made by Metabolic

Maintenance.
