5-HTP

We have begun giving our son 50 mg of 5-HTP to try and improve his

sleep. He falls asleep quite easily, but wakes up very early (often

around 3:00 or 4:00 AM). We began giving him 3 mg of sustained

release melatonin before bed in the hopes of keeping him asleep

longer. He still wakes up early, but will fall back asleep after an

hour or so if we force him to lay still. On a good day, he will sleep

until 5:30 or 6:00 AM. He takes 1100 mg of GABA and 200 mg of L-

Theanine, also. His test results indicated that he has high IAG which

(and please correct me if I am wrong) indicates that he is not

metabolizing tryptophan normally. Since tryptophan is the precursor

to seratonin (and his seratonin is low), we are assuming that this may

be at least part of the reason for his early waking. My question is

this: Will 5-HTP produce an immediate improvement in his sleep or

will it happen gradually over time? We only have been at it a few

days and do not know whether it is not working or we simply need to be

patient. Thanks.
