Guest guest
Sophia, I have heard of one parent who mixed them with agave nectar and then added them to juice. Do you mix with the sweetner first and then add it? Just trying to think of something to help. ) Ginger </HTML>
Guest guest
My son has huge texture issues and does not do juice or anything but water and rice/almond milk. He would not take suppliments in his milk and I spent the first week throwing everything away. What helped for me was to put the suppliments in baby food. He will only take them in carrots, green beans, peas, sweet potatoes or banana. Anytime I put them in any other puree he will not eat it. He likes pears, applesauce, squash yada, yada but will only take them in the foods I listed. I think it is because it masks the taste a bit. When it comes to the CLO, He will only eat the non flavored Nordic Naturals. I also put that in with his food. I still have a hard time with Cal/Mag liquid. I can't seem to mask that in anything right now. Chocolate rice milk is the only thing that he will take it in because he can't taste it but I don't like giving that to him every day because he likes it too much and I think he may have a problem with chocolate. Guest guest
Can you reduce the number of supplements to just essentials and try to get food based nutrients for as much as possible? For us, the problem is the nystatin. It's really disgusting and our three year olds don't swallow pills. So sorry you've run into this problem. Best of luck in trying to resolve it. > > > I buy everything either in capsules (opened), powder or liquid, because > my daughter can't swallow. Guest guest
Sophia, I know you and many others are going to think I am nuts ... but have you tried just opening them up ... putting them on a spoon ... and pushing it into her mouth ... and then giving her a drink. That is what I do. My son would refuse any food with a supp. mixed in ... but he takes it this way. I think it is gross ... but he doesn't seem to mind. I just tell him ... swallow. He does. He takes almost 40 plus supps a day ... and they all go done the same way, one on a spoon at a time. Now he sits and helps me open them and puts them on his on spoon ... It is a whole lot less that you have to get down this way ... and you know its taken ... and not let in the extra juice or food. I wouldn't like my yummy food being destroyed with yucky stuff either .. For my son ... I set out his reward for taking his meds ... and he get to eat his yummy food as soon as the meds go down. It is a win win... He gets good food ...I get his supplements down his throat without a struggle. Go figure. If she is tube fed, you can put the supplements into the tube. If you meant she " cannot swallow capsules " , you can teach her how http://www.danasview.net/capsules.htm Before my kids swallowed capsules, I mixed their supplements into peanut butter and honey. This was not " hiding them in food " , it was a separate mixture that they knew they were required to take. More ideas here http://www.enzymestuff.com/discussionmixing.htm >>When we started it about a year ago there > weren't so many supplements but they were building up to this point. You can reduce to the ones that are essential, or give lower doses of everything so it is not so much at one time. Dana
Guest guest
I agree Melinda. A no nonsense approach. There might be a revolt at the beginning, this is what kids are going to do, test their limits. However, over the long haul, they must be made a participant. Certainly beats wasting the supplements, running around trying to figure out what will go in what food. That is enough to make anyone crazy. I actually remember being told to lay the child down on the floor, head in my crotch area, arms under my legs, and giving medicine that way. Child is safe, you are safe from flying objects, and the medicine is where it needs to be. My son soon learned that I meant business, and he accepted it in a more dignified manner. If it is given in love, it will be accepted that way. I agree on the win win. Guest guest
We use babyfood bananas with my 7 year old. He started with supplements at 3 1/2. It took about a year before he ate it willingly. We withold his favorite food (cookies) until he takes it (back then it was a struggle). I know it doesn’t taste good (I’ve never tried it b/c I’m a vegetarian) but it’s something he HAS to do. Many times when we added things (Coromega fish oil, MB12 powder, R L-Glutathione) his speech and processing got better right away. I KNOW he would not be the same kid without his supplements. BTW- I noticed after we added the Kirkmans MB12 Powder he liked it better. I think it was a flavoring. Guest guest
Sophia, I know this sounds bad, but can you mix them with a small amt of liquid and then shoot them into her mouth with a syringe? I've found when I have to do this, that if you aim the meds for the inside of the cheek, you don't have to worry about choking your child and they'll usually swallow instinctively. Good luck to you. I hope you find something that works. Kim --- sidereangel <sidereangel@...> wrote: > > I buy everything either in capsules ( opened), > powder or liquid, because > my daughter can't swallow. Guest guest
Sophia, I had this problem too. I never could use a syringe or apple sauce. I ended up finding that using a strong tasting juice was the answer. The stronger the juice the less he notices what’s in it. Concord grape or mixed berry, 100% juice, works best for my son. I really wanted to move to pear or pineapple but he wouldn’t take them. Now I only have to use a small amount of juice and he drinks the whole thing. Also, what are you giving for supps? There are sometimes supps with less taste that you might be able to switch to when you run out. Other people also use some transdermal vitamins to break up how much they have to take orally. Don’t give full dose at 1st slowly increase each vitamin. Guest guest
If it makes you feel any better my son didn't start taking fish oils until about 7 months ago, and to this day does not take a high dose multivitamin (like Brainchild, ASD plex or SuperNu Thera). I don't think you have to drop the DAN protocol just because of that. We do a lot of things transdermal (chelation and glutathione) and give MB12 by injection. For my son its been a slow process getting him to take things orally as he started out VERY orally defensive. I only give him tiny amounts, and worked with our DAN and found chewables that he would take and just either increased the dose, or I was happy he was getting something in him. I agree with a strong tasting juice, that seems to work best for us too. With his fish oils they are mixed in a tiny 3 oz dixie cup with a juice and a Torani syrup (not a good thing to use if yeast is bad - lots of sugar) But the whole thing is maybe 2 ounces, and I have him suck it up with a straw, it goes so much faster that way. At first we rewarded him with chocolate chips (enjoy life foods brand, he's on the diet too) and slowly phased that out, now he just drinks it and its done. I'm actually going to begin a trial using ASD plex vitamins and mix them with his favorite juice into small popsicles and see if he'll eat them that way. Check with the manufacturers of the supplements, and some can be heated and baked into foods, some can be frozen...etc. I've been able to sneak small amounts of supplements in that way as well. I always figured a small amount that he couldn't taste was better than none at all, even if it wasn't the full dose. Lastly, many parents have told me they got frustrated, started loading up a syringe with the daily vitamins and would make the child take it. I tried that for a few days and each time it made my son throw up, his oral defensiveness was that bad. So I've never gone back down that route, but its always an option that was presented to me. Good luck, but again, I don't think you have to abandon the DAN protocol for this, talk with the doctor, find what is most important right now. As my son has got older (he's not quite 5 yet) and started recovering more just with what we are doing, his oral defensiveness is gone, and he is more open to taking things. Plus he's now at the stage where bribery works...lol! > > > I buy everything either in capsules ( opened), powder or liquid, because > my daughter can't swallow. Guest guest
Btw- Coromega tastes really good (from what I’ve been told). It’s fishoil in little packets. I use Flax Oil myself. Someone online told me to get it on Amazon- which was very helpful, because the price was the best. Guest guest
Hi, Sophia: We have similar problems with our boys. I heard an ASD Nutritionist, Strickland from TX, talk about treating the child's feeding problems before we try to get to advanced nutrition for our kids. So we are working with a multi-disciplinary Feeding Team consisting of our OT, S/L Pathologist, and our Behaviorally-trained workers in the home. We are addressing sensory integration, tolerance training, oral, oral-motor, and swallowing skills, with a pill swallowing program (starting out with tiny, tiny, empty capsules that you can order). This is not a quick fix, but it's a start for a healthier life. Don't give up! But get help and support to deal with this, ok?
