Laurie-

Hi you mentioned in your post that your daughter has problems with

keeping her hands out in from of her.Can she roll over yet? (I can't

remember how old she is?)Do her arms seem to get stuck down by her

sides when she tries to roll? I'm asking these Questions because that

is the same exact thing that My daughter is having trouble with. Have

you started the Phys Therapy yet? Does your daughter seems to use one

arm or hand more than the other? We jsut went to ped on Friday and he

told us that Abigail's left arm is weaker than the right. So we also

will be starting Phys therapy for that and the range of motion in her

neck. Does have Tort? Abigail was never diagnosed however will

not turn to the left. So we believe she does have tort to some

degree.

How is she doing with getting the fluids down? Does she like juice?

Abigail has only had a cold so I can not give you any advice on the

sick thing.Good luck. Keep me informed.

I agree. Maybe one scoop with 4 oz. etc. Also try to keep track of

how many wet diapers you have over a 24 hour period. That will help

to let you know if she is getting enough to drink.

My daughter did not smile at herself in the mirror at 6 months and

the physical therapist said she was only a couple of weeks behind.

Two months? I'm not expert but I'm not so sure that babies can be

expected to " socialize " that young. All babies grow at different

levels, please take care of the plagio and put this on the " things to

worry about later " shelf.

Hi, as far as mirrors go, I know I read some research somewhere that they

don't recognize their own reflection until 20 months or so.. My son is

almost 20 months and still doesn't act any different looking in the mirror

at himself with his band on as he ever has before. what was the original

question? : ) diane

Beck,

I was wondering what the ped did with the mirror? Did s/he move it

from side to side to see if your baby had range of motion? Maybe it

was some sort of test for that?!? Torticollis? I agree with the post

that your baby surely didn't recognize himself...but I think they do

like faces and maybe if the ped moved the mirror your baby would

follow it more readily than an object at two months old. Just a

thought.

Your situation sounds a lot like ours with our son! Our ped who knew

about plagio became out-of-network when was 3 months old and we

chose to continue to see her out-of-pocket! The new ped we tried at

4 months said there was nothing that could be done - he would be

deformed! That sent me back to the ped who knew there was

helmet/band therapy out there faster than you could say " YIKES! "

We repositioned from just before 2 months until about 6 months

old when he received his first DOC band. We did see improvement

repostitioning, but not enough to avoid banding him - twice! Some

parents have had better success with repositioning than we did. We

interviewed our local orthotist and the people at Cranial Tech in

Dallas and made our decision from there. It was not an easy

decision, but my husband and I decided that price and convenience

were not as important as getting 's head correction maximized -

it was hard to take being told he would be deformed - and we didn't

want to take any chances. We chose to fly/drive to Dallas from Tulsa

(250 miles each way) for the DOC bands. Our insurance, BCBS-OK, did

cover both bands at the 70% out-of-network rate; we had to appeal to

get in-network benefits of 80% (which we won) because it wasn't

available in our state. It took a long time (3 months for ins.

approval) and even longer to get the payments to CT because we were

out of state....but it can be done!

We have no regrets! We are not wealthy people - just a one-modest!-

income family! We stopped going out to dinner and made some

lifestyle changes. 's been out out his bands 6 months....he is

now 17 months old....and he sports a beautifully rounded noggin, and

looks as normal and symmetric as other children without plagio -

facial and back of the head.

Every family has to decide on their own what is best for them, so I'd

recommend you interview (interrogate!) them both. Then you will be

able to make the most informed decision, based on you own experinces

with what is available to you.

Wow! I don't think you should worry! It seems awfully young to be

able to get that reaction towards the mirror! Every baby is

different and develops at a different rate. Try, as hard as it may

be, to not compare your baby with others of the same age!

Your pediatrician sounds a little on the cautious side. That could be

good, but not to the point of making you a nervous nellie!

Good luck!

Hey Diane- The original question was...I was just wondering why my ped- would be so concerned about it when my son is only 2 months- I wasnt sure if it had a correlation with Plagio and what looking in the mirror told her about his development. Thanks:-)

I shared your email with my husband-we too are modest one family income. The drive to Dallas is 6 and half hours from Memphis so we will see about Atlanta which is a little closer. If I can find a DR I trust-otherwise it will be Dallas. We had to go back to our capitated ped- so he could document that we were going to get a consult and he said he didn't feel this was necessary it would round on its own and just to reposition him- I tried to explain what does when repositioning him but he blew me off and lectured me that i needed to choose one DR or the other but having 2 ped- follow my son was unnecessary- I told him you are right and after he wrote in the chart that he is referring my son to neuro for evaluation I asked him for a complete copy of the chart and told him I would be transferring to another pediatrician. He got so angry but what do I care-it's not his son who will have to suffer it is mine. It is only money anyhow!

Just wanted to say that I think you handled your situation with your ped

perfectly!! I was cheering you on right through my computer screen in the

middle of my office. All I have to say is, " you go girl!!! "

If you dont mind my input I would like to say. All ped. should be updated on

this. I can still remember these words. Oh it will correct on its own. Going

to the ped. in the morning cant wait till I see her face. Im checking for a

new ped. for my son. Ranae

The fact that so many peds seem uninformed about plagio has been a real big

concern for many of us in this group. We sympathize with your situation and

I'll bet there are at least 100 or more of us here that can say we heard the

EXACT same thing. I think it is a real good idea to search for a ped that is

supportive of helmet/banding therapy for children with plagio. Let us know

how your search for a good ped goes!!
