Guest guest
I have severe sleep issues, as do my two DDs. I was on three Rx sleep meds at the same time to get some sleep. Because of side effects, I had to go off them. I don't know if you do dietary intervention, but I did the Failsafe diet elimination diet and I'm sleeping 5 1/2 - 6 hours straight. This is huge for me! My girls are also sleeping through the night. It might be worth trying. > > Nothing worked for my son waking up in the middle of the night. > Melatonin, 5HTP, benadryl, zantac for his reflux, etc. We finally > started Clonodine in October and it worked for 2 months, then stopped. > We upped the dose, it lasted another 2 months, then stopped. Many times, sleep issues are caused by foods, especially milk, corn, and phenols http://www.danasview.net/phenol.htm Sometimes enzymes help, sometimes not. Yeast overgrowth can also cause sleep issues. http://www.danasview.net/yeast.htm Certain nutritional deficiencies, viruses, and a few other things can also cause this problem. Guest guest
The time at which the sleep stops is particularly relevant in Chinese medecine. For example, they believe that wakings between 3 and 5am indicate a liver problem. Early wakings after that indicate yeast problems. Body pains that go away after 8 could be related to digestion as the stomach is working from 7 to 8 (I think)... An acupunturist or chiropractor may be able to tell you more... -- Re: Why would Clonodine stop working? Guest guest
In Chinese medecine they would say that his liver is overworked - or in trouble of some kind. They believe that 3-5 am is time for the liver to rejuvenate itself. Otherwise all I know is that melatonin is produced in the gut, mainly... And that it is responsible for keeping someone asleep through the night. That zinc has been proven to restore/heal the gut in about 8 weeks when taken therapeutically and that it does then allow the body to manufacture its own melatonin (and serotonin since that too is mostly made in the gut). Have you tried supporting the liver through something like milk thistle? Wish I could help more... .... -- Why would Clonodine stop working? Melatonin, 5HTP, benadryl, zantac for his reflux, etc. We finally started Clonodine in October and it worked for 2 months, then stopped. We upped the dose, it lasted another 2 months, then stopped. Upped the dose again to .15 mg (.2 mg is max)and same thing. Now we are at ..2 mg and it's not working at all. It does a GREAT job at calming him down and helping him fall asleep faster (30 minutes as opposed to 2 hours like before), but he's waking up at 3 am. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Interesting...what would cause his liver to be taxed? He is on Bethanecol, but I can't remember if that taxes the liver or not. He takes zinc separately (mini minerals) b/c his levels were low. So, what does everyone use for liver support? Thanks! > > In Chinese medecine they would say that his liver is overworked - or in > trouble of some kind. > They believe that 3-5 am is time for the liver to rejuvenate itself. > > Otherwise all I know is that melatonin is produced in the gut, mainly... Guest guest
Caffeine, fried foods, dairy, meds/herbs/vitamins, artificials, alcohol (drinks or in preparations), phenols in foods, saturated fats can all burden the liver. Extra hormones from things around us (like plastics leaching xenoestrogens) also call on the liver for detox. More info on liverdoctor.com Milk thistle is the more widely used remedy. Enzymes will break down the food so that it doesn't burden the liver quite as much. Sleep problems, eczema, hyperactivity, are but a few of the symptoms of a potentially burdened liver. .... -- Why would Clonodine stop working? > > Nothing worked for my son waking up in the middle of the night. > Melatonin, 5HTP, benadryl, zantac for his reflux, etc. We finally > started Clonodine in October and it worked for 2 months, then stopped. > We upped the dose, it lasted another 2 months, then stopped. Guest guest
I was waking around 3:30 every AM without ability to go back to sleep. This had been going on for several months. I started Milk Thistle a few weeks ago and began sleeping through the night. At first I was sleeping through the night most nights with a few wakings still here and there; now I sleep through the night - once in a while I get up to go to the bathroom but immediately fall asleep again just like before my period of waking. A very cheap solution !!!!!!!!!!!!! Wendell Why would Clonodine stop working? Nothing worked for my son waking up in the middle of the night. Melatonin, 5HTP, benadryl, zantac for his reflux, etc. We finally started Clonodine in October and it worked for 2 months, then stopped. We upped the dose, it lasted another 2 months, then stopped. Upped the dose again to .15 mg (.2 mg is max)and same thing. Now we are at .2 mg and it's not working at all. It does a GREAT job at calming him down and helping him fall asleep faster (30 minutes as opposed to 2 hours like before), but he's waking up at 3 am. Any thoughts? You know how it is when you get used to sleeping through the whole night and then it stops! It's torture...lol. Plus he's not his best during the day, anymore. Thanks all! Guest guest
we use trazadone for brittany and fortuately it works. It is definitely something we need to address when we see Dr. Usman in the fall, but for now, it works and I can't get too worried about it. Brittany was a horrible sleeper after a surgery 3 + years ago. It was a horrible experience. We weren't sure if it was the bone pain, morphine, anesthsia, etc.. that triggered her insomnia. Not fun at all. Take care,
Guest guest
The nicest part of it, IMHO, is that in a few weeks or months, your liver will have cleansed and you'll be able to " fly solo " i.e. Give up the milk thistle and still sleep through out the night... It solves the problem at its root ! .... -- Re: Why would Clonodine stop working? I was waking around 3:30 every AM without ability to go back to sleep. This had been going on for several months. Guest guest
I figured I'd take it until school is out for the summer and then try " solo " as I'd not be working then.
