Guest guest
So if I follow you correctly you changed nothing else at all and gave your daughter the equivalent of 1 full gel cap of ProEFA on days 1 and 2 and her stools changed dramatically and now she has a fever? This sounds to me like either 1) She is allergic to the oil or 2) She is having an unrelated fever/bug that is coincidental and/or 3) She has trouble digesting fats Are there other fatty things in her diet and if so how doe she do with them? I guess I would also say I think you started a little too quickly. Way back when (2 years or more) we started w/about 1/4th cap of ProEFA and spent more than a week working up to 1 capsule. Full dose isn't necessarily 2 capsules it is whatever your particular child needs. I hope this helps Josie 1st timer Hello All I have been a member of this message group for a few weeks now & finally have decided to join in for the 1st time due to a question that came up. My 2.5 year old daughter was diagnosed at age 2 with autism. We have been on the gluten free, cassein free (and mostly soy free) diet since April & have been quite pleased with the results (although we always want more, right) We have an appointment with DAN! dr O'hara (in CT) set up for August. In the meantime, I wanted to start the next step by adding some supplements to our regimen I just bought Nordic Naturals ProEFA & Cod Liver Oil. I didn't want to introduce two things at once so I started ProEFA alone yesterday morning I think a full dosage would be two capsules, right?? (I ordered the gel caps you can pierce)...I wanted to wean her in so I only gave her 1 capsule on day one (I squeezed it in her very watered down juice & she readily took it) What followed soon afterwards were 2 diapers with VERY loose poop (sorry to be so gross)..that is not usual for her b/c before all of this her stools were always " normal " ..I know, whatever that means...but her demeaner was her ahppy self, didn't complain of any belly pains, etc.. So today on day 2 I followed suit..also only giving one capsule in her juice this morning. Same thing..she has 2 very loose BMs & now has a fever & watery eyes (probably associated with the fever)..and less ebergetic..NOT her happy self So..I can only assume this is a reaction to the meds. I guess maybe I am hoping someone can educate me on what the good reactions & bad reactions would be to the supplement On the diet, when you 1st see bad reactions people tell you to continue on course & then it gets better...is it the same for these supplements or is this a reaction that means we need to stop immediately? Did I give her too much. Should I try again tomorrow but this time with only half capsule in Am & then half in afternoon (maybe I shouldn't have given her one whole capsule worth in one shot)? I haven't even added the cod liver oil to the mix yet Any opinons on what I should do or what is happening would eb great. I am a bit disappointed..I was so pleased at the diet results & just felt motivated to keep the progress going Thanks in advance for your input..and thanks for listening :)
Guest guest
Hi Welcome to the group. Many children don't tolerate supplements as well as we would like for them too, unfortunately. You are smart to just start one thing at a time and work up to a full dose. I've never heard of EFA's causing fever and loose stools, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Each child is so different. It could be that she is just getting sick or it could be that she doesn't tolerate the supplement. I would probably wait a few days until she feels better, then maybe try again. If you get the same response, it is probably a reaction to the supplement. Some children don't tolerate EFA's, or it could be a reaction to some other ingredient (flavorings??) in the supplement. In general, with diet or enzymes there IS an adjustment period that you just have to work through. However, with supplements my general rule is: If things don't go very well within the first couple days, I stop. Then I may try again at a later date. Others may have different opinions on this, but I tend to be very cautious with supplements. Some children need many supplements, but simply don't tolerate them. Guest guest
Hi - My dd did not tolerate EFA's or CLO or Flax oil. With the flax oil she developed a head to toe rash and a fever. Since you have only started one supplement it should be easy to tell if that is the cause by removing it for a day or so and see if things improve. We did GFCF for 4 solid months, added enzymes for the next 2 with the diet and are now weaning off the diet with excellent results. Good luck with your DAN! appt! > > Hello All > > I have been a member of this message group for a few weeks now & finally have > decided to join in for the 1st time due to a question that came up. > > My 2.5 year old daughter was diagnosed at age 2 with autism.
