Hello Ramona,

I have a similar problem not as bad as it sounds in your child. Sometimes my

son sleeps with digital clocks and he is also obsessed with numbers in different

ways. I finally changed my oven which doesn't have a digital clock I couldn't

take him running back and forth in the kitchen.

The obseesion with numbers comes and goes. I suggest you teach him

functionality about numbers (if he doesn't already know - I don't know his age

neither) but something like reading clocks, addition, subtraction, calendar,

counting drills in his ABA, etc. As my son learned the functions of numbers it

kind of helped him.

Also please check his yeast level- this always makes things worse. If Nystatin

is not good enough ask his doctor about Diflucan

I wish you patience.

My son has autism and is relatively high functioning with the

exception of the obsessions he has and his speech delay.

He has seen Dr. Krigsman in New York (gi doctor) and he was diagnosed

with colitis, duenditis and gastritis. He has been on numerous

medications, including prednisol , which drove him crazy. He is on

Pentasa now which is supposed to only localize in the intestine and

not get in the blood system. We have been working on yeast issues

also and give him nystatin. He is GFCf and on many supplements,

enzymes, probiotics etc.

He can not have the radio on in the car because of the numbers on the

radio, he plays with the t.v, thermostat, stove, microwave anything

with numbers. I try doing listening therapy with him and he takes the

cd player out after each song to see which number is next. He is

really bad with this. He gets uncontrollably obsessed and has temper

tantrums and hits his head.

This is unbearable. I am hoping to find a way to stop this without

going to medication which is just around the corner. It is really

messing up our home life. I also have a 7 year old and a 3 1/2 month

old. We are hoping to find a way to have some normalacy in our lives.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank YOu.,

I just wanted to let you know my son is this way with

magazines/books(obsessives). He observes them gently for an hour and then slowly

destroys them. He is always wanting new ones(likes the new feel/look). He is

very obsessed with them(toys rarely interest him). We are always having to keep

them around for him(can be costly). And watch out if he doesnt have his own, our

family learns the hard way not to leave any new books/magazines around ie.

school books, for work, etc. This is daily, hourly, etc. and when his gi is

acting up he is even more determined to have them(Im sure this is comforting to

him when dealing with pain/discomfort). When he is in a lot of discomfort and

expressing the aggressive behaiviour like headbanging etc. I have given into

books we would rather him not get a hold of, I probably shouldnt, but it is his

comforting and so I do! Occaisionally even a neighbor well brink a bag full of

all there magazines they have collected. He goes nuts!!!!! The bad

thing is he does like to chew on them and this has been a difficult task in

breaking him of(Im sure the inks are not good on the gi at all). So now instead

of chewing(tries to occasionally), we constantly have hundreds of little pieces

of torn paper all over the floors and constantly picking them up. All throughout

day until he is in bed!! But this is better than him chewing them. I wish the

best for you trying to figure it out for your son. It took me a long, long time

to get him to the point of tearing into pieces instead of chewing. It is not the

same as teaching my other children not to do something, obsession/compulsion is

a whole different ball park. Is it possible to buy something that could just be

his that has numbers and something that changes to keep his interest on that one

or two items? I know this may be far fetched(getting your son his own things

with numbers), my son wants ALL mags/books he might spot and not content with

just his own. Honestly, as far as

normalcy, I have just accepted the unnormal is the norm now and just much more

tired(I have teens also)! :) Let me know if you find something that works!

Jennie<>< ps he also has second obsession, sunglasses!!! Thank GOD for dollar

stores:)

Max loves numbers, he does really well in math in school. Try giving your

child a calulator and showing them how it works, he could take that to bed

with him.

Hi,

My son is all about numbers (and letters) too. He loves the microwave,

calculators, and especially elevators etc... We will let him play with these

items for periods of time as long as he plays " right " not jumping up and down /

being stimmy etc. The best thing for us has been teaching him functional play

or at least to act appropriate tho it can be a battle at times. This has gotten

better over time but still definitely presents. Can you take the numbers away?

Ex. put the CD player out of reach or tape paper over the car radio? If you do

this you may be able to use the numbers as a reward for positive behavior and as

a motivator for him to ask for things (if he doesn't already). And, if he

behaves inappropriately take them away (and yes endure the tantrum) but once he

realizes that the cause - effect is consistent it may help. My son was also dx

by Dr. Krigsman with the same stuff and I have to say that for us, Nystatin was

a nightmare - it went way beyond die off

(which definitely led to increased stimms and negative emotional responses).

Currrently we are on preservative free flucanazole (diflucan) but at a very low

dose 1/4 tsp per day. If you are doing other things like going GFCF and

probiotics, these can also cause withdrawl / die off and the obsessions can

become worse - you may know this already. I know that it's really hard, today

we went to the UPS Store to mail a sample to Dr. K and was facinated by

the numbers on the mailboxes... And of course you don't want your child to

stand out anymore than absolutley necessary. Hang in there. Who knows, maybe

the silver lining will be that our little guys will get into MIT :-)

My 10 year old son has " Asperger Spectrum Tendancies " and I can so

relate to this discussion on " Obsession with numbers " .

When we are in a parking lot walking into a store, he checks out

everyone's license plates and tells me which ones are EXPIRED from

the little month/year tag in the corner.

On cd's he used to ask for #4, rather than use the NAME of the song.

I didn't understand back then, but I do now.

And the TIME/TEMP he is obsessed with THOSE numbers and everything to

do with WEATHER.

And MAPS, wow, he loves maps and wants to know how far it is to this

state or that city.

He can memorize any PHONE NUMBER he hears or finds on my cell phone

address book. And THEN wants to CALL them.

And as far as CHEWING, will chew his paper cups, and other

paper items, and I never understood why.

ARE YOU GUYS SAYING THAT WHEN THESE THINGS ARE AT THEIR HEIGHTH IS

WHEN HE IS HAVING SOME SORT OF PROBLEM WITH HIS

FOOD/PERSERVATIVES/YEAST/OR ANY OF THE OTHER THINGS I HEAR ABOUT ON

THESE BOARDS????

SO I GUESS I SHOULD START A NOTEBOOK USING HIS " BEHAVIOR " AS THE

STARTING POINT, AND BACKTRACKING WHAT FOODS HE HAS HAD?????

For my son, obsessions were viral. I have used high doses of vitamin

C, vitamin A, olive leaf extract, Virastop enzyme, and Lauricidin for

my son's virus issues, with much success.

As viruses are eliminated, it does tend to cause a LOT of yeast, so

watch for that.

For my #3, this was caused by eating foods or supplements not

tolerated, and when he had a yeast overgrowth issue

Obsessions were viral for my son, but having a yeast problem did

increase the obsessions.

Yes, try using enzymes [or diet changes], yeast control, anti-virals,

etc, see if things change for him.

Start one thing at a time.

That can work very well.

Good luck.

In talking about obsessing with numbers, I think of the movie " Rain

Man " with Tom Cruz!! My son was also born with a similar brain

condition as the numbers genious who is the main character in the

movie(true story). My son has not showed the ability with numbers,

but his memory is remarkable. But Im thinking those of you with

children who obsess with numbers, this could be a gifted situation!!

Jennie<>< Im thinking the chewing on paper is possibly a craving for

some of our kids or as Dana stated, viral affects.

My 6-year-old daughter would not be considered " high-functioning "

like your son, but she does this same thing with the CD's. I have

over 200 CD's in the car, and she has every single one catalogued in

her brain. I'll ask her what she wants to listen to and she says "

Beethoven....Number 153, track 8 " or something similar. At first I

thought it was just random, but then before I could insert the CD

she'd start humming the piece in perfect pitch. She never misses, no

matter how many track are on the CD. It's truly uncanny, and

definitely a gift.

This sounds like my three year old-who we are also finding out is high funct

autism. He LOVES numbers-at two he was adding simple numbers and counting to

100. He is also obsessed with the planets and the alphabet since he was 20

months old.

Anyway, we were told some of it is caused by yeast overgrowth. He is on

diflucan, and we alternate between a natural, Fire Tree Bark and GSE as

antifungals. But...he still has major yeast issues. We just tried a naturopath

last week, and my ds got his first Colonic. I got one too, and I have never

felt so alive and great in all my life. She could see the mucus and yeast built

up in his poor colon. He did very well-no stimming or obsessions for about a

week and went back to near baseline thereafter. So, we will go to SCD diet to

eliminate sugars and yeast in foods, and also do hydrotherapy (HBOT) before the

colonic to get more lasting results (a month or more) and finally healing....

I have never been so excited about a treatment in a long time as I am about

this colonic stuff! www.drjuliasinn.com

We love it! HTH
