Tammy,

Are you trying to follow a growth curve? From my understanding a baby does

95% of their head growth in the first year. Sierra and I are waiting for the

5% to kick in. Here is a link, but not a good one...

http://epregnancy.com/info/baby/growth-boy.htm

There are other sites where you can chart your baby's growth. Send word if

you need help!!

Hi,Does anyone know where I could get an accurate chart for appropriate head growth? At my son's 6 month appt., the doctor remeasured my son's head because he thought that what the nurse measured was a jump from how my son's head had been growing. The doctor got less than what the nurse measured. Well, we went for his 9 month check on Friday, and I asked if his head growth was appropriate. The doctor remeasured and got more than the what the nurse measured. I also asked because at CT, my son is graduating sooner than they anticipated (9 weeks total...started at 7.5 months and moderate assymetry). The doctor wants my son to come back in 6 weeks to remeasure his head. He wants to rule out Hydracephalus. He said that he really doesn't think my son has this but wants to make sure. If his head growth is still more than what it should be then we'll be sent for a CT scan. I am trying not to worry and realize that my son

probably just has his daddy's head (i.e. his dad has a big head) but want to know if anyone else has had this before (discrepancy in measuring or a CT scan on their child's head). Thanks, 9month old son, DOC band

Hi ,

I don't know about accurate measurements, but my daughter had a

similar situation. She's 15 mo now, but at birth her head was 50th

percentile, and at 6 mo it was 90th. The nurse always gets a different

number than the doc. At about 6 mo we got an ultrasound to rule out

hydrocephalus. My doc didn't want to do a CT scan (which is a better

test for this) because she thought the chance was very very low, and

didn't want to sedate Sydney. At that time her soft spot was still

open so the ultra sound gave them a good look and they didn't see any

problem. Also shes 90-95% for height and weight so a big head is not

that different. They had us come in at 8 mo (which isn't a normal

visit for my ped) to check her head size again.

We go for her 15 mo check on friday, we'll see if there is any concern

about her head, but I don't expect any. She's been very healthy and

hit all her milestones on time or early. She talks a lot now (30+

words?) climbs, runs, etc so I think she just has a big head. The

concern is more that she didn't follow the normal curve than that her

head is too big, but she seems to be fine. I hope your little one is too.

Thanks . It is encouraging to hear that I am not the only one that has had this type of an issue and that for your daughter it turned out to be nothing. Hopefully, my little guy will be just fine and it is nothing for him as well. There is a head growth chart in the files section. Hopefully it'll

give you a good gauge for head size. My guy has a little head (10-

15th percentile), but has always been on about the same curve which

is what they look for. Good luck!

Thanks Sheila! My ped. rarely gives us the percentiles but I know when CT has measured my son he has been in the 95th percentile but my son is also 95th for height and weight so his head looks proportionate. I hope that we don't have to do a CT scan as sedating a baby makes me nervous. Sheila <lotspeis@...> wrote: There is a head growth chart in the files section. Just an FYI - your baby doesn't necessarily need to be sedated for a CT scan. When we had ours done, my son was not sedated. They were able to wrap him up in a blanket so he did move and I think I fed him right before hand so he was a bit drowsy. The dr. thought it was best to try it first without sedation and then if it didn't work we would do it with sedation.

What was the result from your son's CT scan? That is good to hear that they don't necessarily sedate them. My son never had a CT scan to confirm that he just had plagio and not craniosyntosis. Cranial Technologies said he definitely didn't have craniosyntosis but it sounds like a lot of people have a scan or Xray to confirm one way or another. Is this to cover themselves or do they do the scans or Xrays if they can't tell for sure. Am I missing something? I think it just depends upon the doctor. Some doctors feel confident that they can tell by examining the head; others are more cautious and have the CT scan done for confirmation.
