Have a sleep test. Sleep apnea can really make you tired during the day, and it

can have other health effects, too. My DH has it and using the CPAP machine has

made a world of difference in his life.

Sounds to me that a sleep study might answer some of your questions. My

main complaint was insomnia but the study showed sleep apnea and I have had

a CPAP (breathing machine that you use at night) and it has made a

difference in my sleepiness. I was one who said " I don't have that too " but

I did. It is not a good idea to take iron without your doc doing some

studies to see if you need it. To much iron can be a lots bigger problem

than too little. Anne

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with fatigue? I have

been exhausted for the past 3 weeks. I haven't been sleeping more, or

less. Yet I'm waking up exhausted. I've been taking extra iron, but I

wonder if there's more I can do with my diet (I'm an Atkins follower)

that would help. I have a hard time staying awake at my desk at work

and on the 25 minute drive home at night.

My boyfriend says I snore and gasp for air at night. Could this be

sleep apnea rather than something related to PA? I've been tired for

years, but this is extreme.

I have to drive to Virginia four weeks from now and I don't want to be

falling asleep behind the wheel as it's a long drive. Any suggestions

would be appreciated.

Hi Jane, You might want to have your B12 levels checked...I take shots now

for pernicious anemia and it helps with the fatigue. Also taking folic acid

supplements helps me

I also snor and wake up several times. sometimes gasping . I think I have

sleep apnea also. Isn't the CPAP maching annoying?

This description is consistent with sleep apnea which can certainly cause you

to feel exhausted after what should have been a sufficient period of sleep.

Think of it this way; Let's say you lay down and go to sleep, as soon as you

get relaxed and fall into a deep sleep mode I yell WAKE UP and shake you.

Thats alright you can go back to sleep but as soon as you relax again WAKE UP.

So you arent getting any real restful sleep just a minute or two here and

there throughout 8 hours. Long term this can cause serious problems aside from

the oxygen deprivation you might suffer between gasps.

When your body does fully relax the muscles of the tongue and throat also

relax.

The geometry of the structures in your mouth, nose and throat dictate whether

you will likely develop sleep apnea. Excess weight and advanced age

contribute to an increased likelyhood or worsening of the problem. You may try

to

train yourself to sleep in a position where snoring is less likely but most

people

have a preferred sleeping position that they will unconciously move to and if

that happens to be flat on your back then you may have to resort to other

means to prevent these pauses in breathing. Do the sprays actually work?

I have never seen this mentioned, though I havent really searched, but I

have wondered if a person could do excercises to tone up the muscles around the

throat to lessen the severity of snoring such as singing or maybe a yawning

movement? Orin

Also have your hemoglobin checked it should be 11 or above. If it is not ask

about Procrit injections. My hemoglobin had always been 6-9 and even taking

2 mgs of folic acid a day couldn't get it up to 11. My B-12 was fine so the

binding of iron should have been fine. Any way my GP sent me to a hematologist

and he DX me with chronic illness anemia and began me on the Procrit and my

levels went up in 3 weeks to 11.9. He has stopped the Procrit and says unless

my numbers drop again I don't need to take it regularly. If they drop again

he will start it again. Just something I thought you may want to look into.

Not nearly as annoying as being so tired you can barely function. I also

have sleep apnea and when I was overweight it was considered a very severe

case, and I went years undiagnosed with such bone-crushing fatigue that I

don't know how I made it through each day, looking back. The CPAP was an

absolute godsend for me, a real lifesaver.

It's pretty unlikely that a case of moderate to severe sleep apnea would be

helped by such things. Perhaps a very mild case would, but people with mild

sleep apnea don't even realize that's what they have (because there's not

the same heavy snoring and gasping signals). In moderate to severe cases,

the problem is either largely mechanical (very short neck, for example) or

largely weight-related, so muscle toning wouldn't help.

It took some persistence for DH to get used to the mask and the machine, but he

would not sleep, even for a short nap, without it now. Yes, it is annoying for

me to listen to at night, so I use ear plugs.

This is true. My DH has a small throat, large uvula. He had his tonsils out

when young. Sleep apnea really became a problem for him when he was about 40,

which is typical. He's only a little bit overweight, but the weight tends to go

on around his neck. That, plus age, plus the basic starting geometry of his

neck, causes the sleep apnea.

our daughter developed mild sleep apnea at age 2. Pediatric ENT told me she had

a small throat and large tonsils. The solution in her case was

adenotonsilectomy at age 4 - solved the problem. But since she seems to have

inherited her father's throat, she may be using a CPAP machine which she hits

middle age!

I have thought for awhile I might need to be tested for sleep apnea.

I started out with a short neck which was shortened more by fusions

from PA. I do wake up gasping for air sometimes. I really learn

alot here!

Jane, you should be getting plenty of iron in your diet if you are adkins. Be

careful of taking iron unless your bloodwork says you need it. You can get

really sick from too much iron. Of course, you may be quite young and loosing

extra blood each month so you may have nothing to worry about. But with PA

fatigue is unfortunately very commonplace & not at all connected with iron.

Just a caution. I have no answer for the fatigue. I'm trying to fight that

devil myself. Sylvia

My three year old son is ASD and suffers from a very low immune

system. He is LOD & GFCF. We just tested for viruses and he tested

postive for three. We are taking steps to boost his immune system

through starting Mutafor, Artichoke Extract and OLE. Pretty soon after

starting the Mutafor and Artichoke Extract he started to become

extremely tired. He has never been a good sleeper so we are used to a

low level of tiredness but this is really different. He is complaining

about being tired all day. I am at a loss as to what to attribute this

to or what to test for, look for, etc.? Any thoughts?

Hi,

I can't be of any help as to what is going on with your son being

tired but just thought I'd mention glyconutrients to you. Have you

heard of them. Well it is basically an immune system builder. We

give our son Ambrotose and I think it really helped him get through

last years flu and cold season. We definately had an improvement of

how many asthma breathing treatments were required. Anyway when we

first saw our DAN he didn't say a whole lot about the glyconutrients

but after we did some testing and saw my sons immune system isn't

the best he said it is probably a good thing that we are giving them

to him. We have had no problems or side effects. People may have

things to say about the MLM company that sells Ambrotose but their

product seems to work for us. You may look into them. Good luck!

A possiblility is artichoke is full of FOS and may be he has some bad

bacteria. If I ate the wrong things I would get very fatigued I

believe because my body was trying to battle the bacteria and deal

with the toxins given off. Not sure how much fos would be in that

supplement due to the natural part of artichoke but I avoid things

high in FOS naturally or in probiotics

No-Fenol has been very helpful for me, altho there are still certain

phenol foods that I have to stay away from. Mineral deficiency can

also cause fatigue, as can milk intolerance and a few other things.

But trying No-Fenol would be a good start, see if that helps.

Has s/h been tested for vitamin B12 level? As people get older their

bodies are less efficient at absorbing B12, leading to pernicious anemia

which causes extreme fatigue.

Are there any symptoms other than fatigue?

Hey ,

I have a sneaking suspicion that iron has no play in this anymore,

whatsoever - and it may just be my zinc levels. I honestly don't know - but -

if you

recall the posts about libido, mine is nonexistent. I read that some folks

increased their Zinc and started feeling better, so I just started taking it

again myself. I have noticed a small difference in desire, but not enough to be

like my old tigress self (*sigh*).

That said, I think I need new blood work, by a new PCP, since the last one

failed me so miserably. According to my Hema, high Ferritin should have me

running marathons.

Thyroid and WBCs are normal. RBCs are very low but Hema says to give it

another 30 days before a recheck.

I don't have ridges, but my nails do peel at the tips. Does anyone

have this problem? I'm trying to pinpoint which vitamin could be

causing this. I started taking biotin. Unfortunately, the nails

take so long to grow that you won't know if it's working for quite

some time.

Can anyone tell me the stats of weight regain? I know a regain of 10-15% of

the total weight lost is pretty standard but it seems I've been reading a

lot of posts lately about a lot of weight regain- obviously I do NOT want to

experience that....just wondering if anyone had any actual data

Hi,

You can find data on weight regain somewhere on the CLOS site (hopefully

someone has a link they will post!). However, it's important to realize

that many, many patients don't " keep in touch " with CLOS and update their

data years down the road. This may mean that there's way less regain or way

more, it's anyone's guess.
