2 weeks of enzymes, question

Ds has been on enzymes for over two weeks. Using the HNI dosing chart, we

slowly worked up to the following schedule for meals only:

1 Zyme-Prime with each meal

1 Peptizyle with each meal

1 No Phenol with lunch and dinner and any snack that contains high phenol

foods

We've seen some really good improvements...the Happy Child Effect was

evident immediately. He's compliant, helpful, pleasant and cooperative, fun

to be around, transitioning well, sense of humour is returning, etc. He is

just delightful lately, and that's so nice! :) However, he's still hyper and

unfocused. His sensory needs are down, but still there. Still the ocassional

outburst or upset over nothing thing going on.

I've also started Epsom salt baths, every other night, about 1-2 cups in his

bath. These seems to be helping, too. I know he needs the magnesium they

supply, and I think the sulfates must be helping him detox and deal with the

salicylates. We tested some food dye (he's on FG diet), but he reacted

pretty obviously to that, even with a No Phenol.

Other supplements he is on: NOrdic Naturals Omega-3 (2 a day), Freeda

multivitamin, Vitamin C (about 250-500/day), and Evening Primrose Oil (2 a

day of Nordic Naturals).

So, here are my questions:

1. Is it common for kids to need more than 1 of each enzyme per meal with

the HNI enzymes? Should I try 2 caps per meal or will there likely not be

any increased effect?

2. Should I now add a probiotic? I have Culturelle, but have held off using

it since I wanted to get established on the enzymes first. When is best to

give it? With meals or between? What dosage should I be aiming for...2x or

3X day?

3. I had suspected leaky gut and/or yeast with him, but now that I'm reading

more about yeast, I'm not sure it's something he could have. He's never been

vaccinated, has never had an antibiotic in his 6 years of life. Very

healthy, normal BMs, not a lot of yeast type behaviors. He is extremely

underweight and height, has eczema, and has tons of food/environmental

allergies. Also loves sweets and craves dairy. Could he still have yeast?

Should I treat for it just to cover my bases? If so, when and how?

4. He is ALWAYS hungry, so he eats 3 meals and probably 3-4 snacks a day. If

I give him enzymes before every snack, he's going to be going through

bottles at a time! How do I handle this? What's the maximum window of

effectiveness for an enzymes dose? If he takes enzymes 20 minutes before a

meal, then eats, then an hour after the meal has another snack, will the

enzymes still be active or do I need to give them again. How long do they

stick around in the gut? After they've done their job, are they excreted

through the colon or what? Just wondering. I was hoping his appetite would

regulate with the enzymes, but so far, no. Can I expect this with increased

use?

5. Are the powdered enzymes by Houston more cost effective? He can swallow

capsules fine, but this is going to be pricey if he increases his intake

anymore. Can I use the powdered enzymes and put them in gelatin capsules

myself? Just wondering if it makes sense cost-wise.

6. I want to try the Epsom salt oil that mentions in her book...where

can I find coconut oil? Is that a Walmart item or more of a Whole Foods

item? Never used it before, so not sure where to find it.

Sorry so many questions at once, but I don't get much computer time, so I

have to do it when I can. :) Thanks so much for all the help! I'm learning a

lot just by reading the other posts on the list.

It really depends on what he is eating and what he has sensitivities to. For

instance, my son is sensitive to dairy and I have figured out that it is the

casein adn lactose that give him problems. so I give him 3 caps of AFP and 3

chewable Zyme prime (equivalent to 1 cap) when he eats chesse or yogurt. I had

to figure out what worked for him and it took a little time, but be patient and

play around with the dosing to see what works for him. In a nutshell, if Noah

eats anything with dairy, gluten or soy, he gets 3 AFP caps. Otherwise, i give

him 1-2 with every meal for things that are questionable or jsut to help

clean him out a bit. He always gets 3 chewable Zyme Prime with EVERYTHING he

eats and NO-Phenol for yeast treatment only. This works for us. Like I said,

it took a while, (couple of months and had to build UP SLOWLY), but I think we

have landed a system that works for him.

Wish I could help you here, but I have never tried Culturelle. But in my

opinion, I would wait a little while on the probiotics and get the enzymes down

first. When you do start probiotics, tho, i would start out very slow. I have

heard many people say that they needed to cut the dosage into 1/4 to start and

build up. THe first day I gave Noah a probiotic, I gave him the whole dose and,

well, it was UGLY. So we waited a couple of days and started over with 1/4 for

a week, 1/2 for a week and so on.

I think that starting with the probiotics is a good step. The key is is that

you don't want to do everything all at once. YOu need to see what works and

doesn't work. I really helps when you log everything...supplements (how much),

food, behaviors, time of day for everything. You said that he has only been on

enzyemes for a coulpe of weeks, right? I don't what to give you bad advice, but

I would wait until you get a good system down w/ enzymes and then introduce

probiotics.

This is just like my son. He is a grazer! At first, we were going through

enzymes like candy, and the cost was getting out of conrtol. I had to implement

some sort of an eating schedule and at first, he HATED it, but now he is use to

it. Mon-Fri we stick to a schedule and the weekends he has more freedom to

" graze. " Basically, he gets breakfast, lunch and dinner and 2 snacks in b/t

meals. I have heard some say that enzymes only last 30 min and others who say

90. So I shoot for the middle and go with 60 min. If I am wrong, I hope someone

will come along and correct me, but it seems to work for us.

I get mine at WHOle Foods. Spectrum makes a good one.

By the way, I liked your blog. LOVED the confessional story!
