Guest guest
, Welcome! I'm sure you already know who I am! I've told two friend of mine, that I'm a Southern Lunar Leo. That's only putting it mildly!!! Thanks for input, I found Tami's reference to the article very interesting.
Guest guest
Amy, Thought you might like to see this from the AAP: " When the Academy first suggested that infants be placed for sleep in a nonprone position,25 concerns were expressed that undesirable complications would ensue. Aspiration pneumonia, ***gastroesophageal reflux, plagiocephaly, and developmental delay were some of the feared complications.90**** Conversely, there is some direct and indirect evidence that infants who vomit are at greater risk of choking if they are sleeping face down.91,92 There is no evidence of an increase in aspiration or increased complaints of vomiting since the incidence of supine sleeping has increased dramatically.91 Although gastroesophageal reflux has been reported to occur less frequently in the prone position,93-95 there has been no increase in infant deaths attributable to aspiration in the United Kingdom with the change from prone to supine sleeping for infants.96 Several reports have suggested an increase of occipital plagiocephaly since prone sleeping has become more frequent,97,98 and there has been concern that this increase has led to an increase in unnecessary operations for craniosynostosis, perhaps secondary to a misdiagnosis of plagiocephaly as craniosynostosis...... Several studies have evaluated the relationship of developmental milestones and sleep position. Attainment of gross motor milestones seems to occur slightly later in infants who sleep supine than in infants who sleep prone; however, a difference is no longer detectable by 18 months old.99,100 This was taken from: www.aap.org/policy/re9946.html March 2000. This makes me wonder if the reflux is caused from the tort or just sleeping on the back. Perhaps another thing they should be telling the peds and public? Does anyone else wonder about reflux and back-sleeping? Riley has been a spitter since day one. It was worse than it is now and it still isn't too good. They say it's not reflux and that she's " thriving " so, why worry? The nurse even joked that " thank goodness she spits up so much, could you imagine her size if she didn't? " (Implying she's a big baby.) It's all too strange. However, my 3 year old son was a spitter too and has a " perfectly " round noggin. I guess I'm just lucky Sue & Riley (banded 10/23/00 - onto the 2nd) Phoenix, AZ
Guest guest
--- Hi- I have been recieving the posts for a long time but this is the first time I have ever written. I still feel like I know you all so well! My son is 14 months and just graduated from his DOC band. He has had REFLUX since birth, and although we knew something was wrong, we were told that as long as he was gaing weight he was okay. Of course this was from the same Dr who said his head would round out! At nine months of age we finally saw 2 specialists, the neuro and the GI specialist. Both of them said that one had nothing to do with the other. However, the GI specialist, a regular ped. as well, had never heard of Plagio. Anyway, the GI specialist told me that he should have seen my son many months before, even though he was gaining weight. The reason is that every time a person refluxes they pass stomach acid back up thru the esophagus. Thru a simple test, he determined my son had blood in his stool. His esophogas was bleeding and it took 5 weeks of Prilosec to get it under control. Who knows how long he had this bleeding, probably for months. He had no other symptoms besides the throwing up. is 14 months and still on Reglan and Prilosec. It helps so much! The Dr is confident that he will grow out of it, he says they all do eventually. Thought I would share my experience to see if that helps you at all. Guest guest
, I guess I must be a nutcase, but doesn't it make you wonder about the AAP just a little bit? Concerns about reflux and plagio were brought up way back when this back-to-sleep campaign started, by the AAP's own admission. I realize that telling parents about reflux and plagio might have made some parents choose tummy sleeping, but when I get a Rx filled, I have to be made aware of EVERY documented possible side effect, whether I will get it or not. Just read your Children's Tylenol, an OTC medicine - all the advice given on the label! It just seems more and more like the AAP is more intent on proving the point that the back to sleep campaign works at ALL costs. After all, they'll grow out of the deveopmental milestone delay, reflux, and plagio - MAYBE - after PREVENTABLE damage has been done. I am just APPALLED that you were so brushed-off by your ped - just because he is gaining weight with refux, there musn't be a problem? Yeah, and I suppose that goes right along with no TMJ possible from plagio even though the TMJ on each side is skewed when the ears misalign. There is no reasoning here whatsoever. Perhaps your child's reflux is a marketing campaign for a pharmaceutical company that makes the product. After all, your GI specialist did say your child would grow out of it and your child DID gain weight. So what's the big deal about a bleeding esophagus and blood in the stool. Nobody's GI tract is perfect and I'm sure we all have blood in our stool from time to time. We just don't test for it all the time. Parents: Don't get so " bent-out-of-shape " that you barf! People are just overreacting to mild cases of refux and just want the Gerber baby who doesn't spit up at all. Every baby spits up! (Where have we heard this " reasoning " before?) I guess some of these peds cannot reason for themselves and just spew off the official positions of the AAP. Please do not misunderstand!! I am very thankful for the reduction of SIDs deaths. Thank God my children were not vicitms of that! IS a casualty of lack of information. How hard would it have been to add a handout about plagio and prevention? And to verbalize upon discharge not only to put baby to sleep on its back, be sure to turn its head if the baby isn't, and that tummy time is necessary for proper meck and trunk development. The handout could be something about turning baby's head and observation [does he always look one direction whether in the crib or not?] - if turning his head doesn't work after a week then see your Dr. as soon as practical. It is likely that two simple, stretching exercises you can do at home for your baby will help him turn his head and prevent flattening. Not to shock, but not to ignore, either. Oh dear, I'll get down off my soapbox. Your post about your baby and reflux just infuriated me! Guest guest
I have 17 mo. triplets and two had plagio, tort and reflux. They wore helmets for 6 mo., received PT 2 times per week for over one year and have been on Zantac. My daughter is off Zantac and her reflux is resolved but my son still suffers from reflux and takes Zantac. His torticollis resolved but his head shape is still asymmetric. My daughter still has tort, and plagio and still receives PT. But at this point I don't know what to do about their head shapes, is there anything else to do? > > >Ny son Zack 8/2/00 has tort, plagfio and reflux!!
