Debby - We had tort big time and wore our band 24/7. No problems. Once they see how light it is! It only weighs I think 6 ounces. We saw periods of straightness in this time too. Don't worry. At his young age you'll want it on to get the maximum amount of correction because growing so fast. Save yourself the money on a second band if need be. You take the band off while doing pt. Good luck!

>Hi everybody!

Zachary was given the go ahead for the DOC band from his ped.

neuro-surgeon and now we have a dilemma!!! His PT and plastic

surgeon want him to wear the band JUST at night for now, because they

feel his Tort is not completely resolved and wearing the DOC band

24/7 would hinder his tort. Of course the people at Cranial Tech

suggest wearing the band all the time. And they swear it doesn't

affect the tort. His PT etc, said they want to gradually get him in

it all the time, First an hour or so a day, then more. Zack will be

6 months on Feb. 2 and I'm not sure who to listen to!!

Anyway, we just contacted Cranial Tech today and they will contact

our insurance company, so we're probably a few weeks away from the

actual casting and getting the band. My first instinct is to have

Zack wear it as much as possible - but I don't want to screw up his

PT and tort treatment.

My PT says that Zack is the first case she knows of where the band

was prescribed for night time use only. I'm sooooooo confused!!

Does anyone have any suggestions, comments, advice?

Debby, are you a member of the egroup for Torticollis? If not, perhaps you

should join and ask the same question on that site? I have never heard that

a baby with tort shouldn't wear the band full time. You are supposed to

take the band off to do the exercises, but then put it right back on when

you are done. Because your son is so young, it would be so much more

beneficial for him to wear the band 23 hours a day so he can get the most

improvement possible. Good luck to you -- and good for you to question the

drs. instead of going along with whatever they say. Maybe they know what

they're talking about but sometimes they are WRONG!

Debby:

Hanna didn't have torticollis, so I'm not the expert, but I have never

heard of a baby who is not allowed to wear a helmet because of the

tort. I know that you are supposed to take the band/helmet off before

doing exercises, but I don't see why you couldn't wear the band 23/7 -

exercises. Did the PT/neuro. give you a straight answer as to WHY Zack

can only wear the band at night? Did they say what would happen if he

did wear it all day? I would ask for these answers before you get the

band. Do they understand that the band only weighs 7 oz? It's not like

Zack will need to build up any super muscles before wearing it. Make

sure everything makes sense to you.
