HI Niki -

I'm from Albany, not too terribly far away considering. We go to the

Cranial Tech site in Paramus NJ. Maggie was 1 week shy of her first

b-day when she got her band. Talk about wasted time!!!! The band is

working and her forehead is perfectly even after 8 weeks in the

band. Her ears are still asymmetrical. My husband was the same way

- didn't see the plagio as much as me. I think it is a daddy's

little girl thing. I am happy to help if you ave any questions.

Hi Niki!

My name is Stacey and my daughter Hannah is 10 months old tomorrow

and she is getting casted Wednesday for her DOC band. She too is

flat (on both sides, especially the right side). I noticed she was

flat by age 4 months. I told her peditrician who said to " flip " her

over. I tried this, but Hannah would find a way to flip back to her

right side to sleep. It wasn't until her 6 month check up that I

demanded to know why she is still so flat. We were sent to have a

skull x-ray (which was normal) and then to a pediatric neurosurgeon

who ordered a CAT scan to make sure her sutures were open.(which they

were). He mentioned something about a band, so we went to the place

in our state, Missouri, who makes them and got all the information

they had. It took 2 months waiting on our insurance company (Humana)

to deny our claim for her to get the $3500.00 DOC band. My husband

and I finally decided to bite the bullet and get it anyway and appeal

the insurance (if they don't pay, we are out of pocket $3500.00...but

no biggie if it works). I didn't know anything about plagiocephaly.

My peditrician never uttered the word to us...I wonder if he even

knew anything about it. My advice to you....Your baby is still

young, if you can reposition, it may make a difference, but there may

be some torticollis...if so, the neck stretches 5x a day may make a

world of difference. I think that if we would have know about them

when Hannah was 5 1/2 months old, she probably would not have needed

the band. Her neck muscles were so tight on the left side, she

compensated by sleeping on the right. Since we have been exercising

her she has started sleeping on the left side and the back

more....But, the research says that after age 6 months if there is

still head " deformaties " the only way to correct is by the

band/helmet or corrective surgery (which they don't do unless the

sutures are fused). But.....talk to your doctor and a neurosurgeon

if possible, and any orthostist could give you all the information

you could possible want on the helmets/bands and maybe even tell you

if your child would be a candidate. Our orthotist said that she only

treats children who have moderate to severe plagiocephaly. If a child

is mild, she does not band them. (just a bit of info). I hope it

helps. My personal advice, based on my expererience....don't waste

valuable time. If your child need a band, they have alot better

success when the kids are young. My daughter will probably have to

wear her band longer since she will be 10 1/2 months old when she

gets it.

Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Mother of Hannah (soon to be banded)
