Hi, we just got our DOC 4 days ago, and it already has a vinegarry smell! Is this the smell you are all talking about? I'm assuming that if it smells already now, it will get worse, correct? We're in Wisconsin, so thought maybe we wouldn't have a problem. She still sweats during the day, but not at night. Our PT said she'd quit sweating when her head was used to the band. Is this correct?

Besides that, she is doing wonderful! I can't believe how well she's adjusted to it. I'd be stressed if I had to wear it all day and to sleep in it, too!

Thanks,

& (1/17/01)

The vinegar smell may be just the adhesive between the layers of foam

on the inside. Our STAR band smelled for the first few days from

that. Then it went away.I think the other smell is from kids sweating

bad in the bands.I can see after a few weeks the smell may get pretty

bad.I haven't gotten that far we have only had my daughters band a

little over a week and it hasn't started to smell yet. Hope this may

help out with the smell problem.

Yes, it is true that the sweating will cut down once your baby's

interal thermostat gets accustomed to the band. It took my i

about a week to grow accustomed to it and after that she did sweat

much at all.

I don't know about the vinegar smell. When i's band got stinky

it was a musky sweaty smell.....it kinda reminded me of an old dog's

collar, not that I make it a point to smell my dog's collar, but that

is what it reminded me of. :o)

What I smelled from the band was sort-of faint sweet/sour odor. Very

much like the sickingly sweet/sour smell from a cast I head years

ago. But everybody smells things differently, so who knows? We

both could be describing the same smell. I think the smell is from

the bacteria in the sweat or from the scalp degrading whatever skin

cells are sloughed-off. With the band on it is nice and warm and

moist in there and bacteria just love it and get busy! (Why daily

hygiene is so very important!)

I spent my first 24 years in WI (Waukesha County)and miss it very

much! Almost all my family is still there. What area are you from?
