he starts scratching, especially around and behind his left ear. Pretty soon his entire ear and surrounding area are pretty red. I can only imagine how itchy he must get in the band, but I'm worried that all the scratching might break his skin. Anyone else have this problem?

Lily, The answer is YES YES and YES! We have been having this problem since before Vince got helmet last Jan. A few days prior to getting helmet he had a very bad out break on his scalp. He was treated with steroids and antibiotics and it cleared up right away. Ped said no big deal it's eczema. Vince still continues to scratch. I have tried using anything and everything. I am now using Aveeno shampoo. He used to get major rashes on face but I also have been using Flax Seed oil in his food and that rash has cleared. The dry scalp still flares up but not as often. It seems like the more frustrated he gets the more he scratches. The ped also prescribed hydroxizine. It's an antihistamine and I only use as needed. The strange thing is he only gets irritated in the area that is not covered by the helmet. Last summer he even became irritated where each air hole is. The residents working at the neuros office thought he was allergic to resin in helmet. The ortho does not. I don't know what else to suggest.... Belinda(Indiana)

Hanna did this too. I just told her " don't scratch " , and pulled her

hand away from her head. It was a pretty useless tactic for a long

time, but I kept doing it and eventually she caught on. Let him scratch

as little as possible, because if he breaks the skin, it will get more

itchy as it heals!

Try rubbing his hair/head with a soft towel when the band comes off.

That will mop up any sweat, and give his head a good rubbing. Maybe

then he won't feel the urge to scratch, because you already did it for

him. :o)
