Guest guest
Hi.....I know how much fun these polls are, but just for , could anyone puhleeze tell me their experiences with Risperdal......I'll make this one easy....we all know about the weight gain....you don't even have to give me the dosages they are or may have been on..... I just want to know what behaviors you saw when your child took Risperdal......better, worse, and why? I'm trying to decide on whether or not the Risperdal is helping ....so far, the only improvement is verbally better, and no teeth grinding.... Thanks all,
Guest guest
, When was on the Respirdal, his self-stim behaviors decreased, he was more sociable and he even started playing appropriately with toys that were at his developmental level....approx. 12 mos. His self-injurious behavior all but stopped except when he was in real stressful situations and he wasn't aggressive. was a hefty kid to begin with and his calorie intake is controlled (he is on g-tube feedings) so weight gain wasn't much of an issue for him. Unfortunately, after he was on the Respirdal for about 6 months, he started to have " breakthrough " behaviors, like SIB and more self-stim, so the doc increased the dose. I guess it was too much for him because within three weeks or so, he went off the deep end and we had to hospitalize him following a trip to the ER. The docs said that it was Extrapyrmidial (sp?) symptoms and that he couldn't take Respirdal anymore. Since then, we have been trying to manage the behaviors with the Zyprexa, Tegertol, and Depekene but it's not great. I think of all of them probably the Tegretol is doing the most. He's about at the top of the Zyprexa dose so we'll have to see what's next. I know that using medication can be a tough decision to make. We decided some years ago that it was the only way we could manage . Before that, at his worst, we had him trussed up like a turkey to keep him from hurting himself or someone else. That sucked! I would much rather zone him out than restrain him! I know others who would do anything before they would use meds. I guess it just depends on where you're at psychologically and how bad the behaviors are. I will include you in my prayers. Terry Mom to , 13 yrs. Guest guest
Sherry, Don't be so hard on yourself.....after all, HE " S the doctor, right? He's supposed to know.....and I think we get so desperate that we are ready and willing to try anything, if there is any chance it might help! My guess is that it's the Trazadone that's making her sleepy or maybe the combination of that and the Risperdal. I don't remember upset stomach being a side-effect of the Risperdal...I thought it was more constipation...but different kids react different ways. I will keep you in my prayers....virtual hugs to you tonight! Please let us know how you decide to handle it. Terry Mom to , 13 yrs.
Guest guest
OK it's now 8:30 PM and still has not eaten a thing without throwing up and she's still asleep. Woke up a little for awhile but back to sleep cuddling with daddy. Now get this!! Jim talked to the doc's receptionist or whatever this morning and explained that turned into a zombie on risperdal (.25 mg). She just returnd the call saying the doctor said to give .5 mg tonght ??!! Twice as much. Seems to be a little breakdown in communication here. What an %$*hole. She was only on zoloft since Tuesday at full dose of 25 mg; Sunday I only gave her half so I hope I'm ok just stopping it tonight. I don't want to put anything in her. The Trazadone she's been on 25 mg since monday. I don't know what to do~I'm sure she'll just throw it up if I give it to her anyway. I can't believe I was so stupid to let him talk me into trying all this shit at once. I KNOW better than that. (SIBs to myself, punch punch) STUPID Mommy. Guest guest
Elie has been on Risperdal for 18 months. We tried to wean him to Zoloft with disasterous effect. The Risperdal stopped ALL agression, reduced perseverative play. Elie started to enjoy, to a limited degree the oompany of other children where he could direct the play. He has gained about 40 lbs in this 18 months and we do controll his food intake. He lost 2.5 pounds in the one month on Zoloft but he had over 20 plus aggressive insidents. Today the new shrink decided that we could take him off Risperdal withut weaning and started on Seroquel. Weight gain should not be an issue. We will see what happens with behavior. So our Thanksgiving will be devoted to playing new medication dosage. Doc says we can play from 25-100mg up to 3 times a day. We will see how his behavior goes. Guest guest
> > > I just want to know what behaviors you saw when your child took > Risperdal......better, worse, and why? > Hi, , age 5, height 37 inches, weight 35 lbs., has taken .25 ml of Risperdal since the beginning of August. His sleep pattern is greatly improved. There is a lot less self stim than there was before and we have lots more eye contact than we had. Overall I am very pleased with the results. He smiles more and seems much better connected with the world around him. I did not let his therapists know that I started the med because I wanted to see if they noticed anything and they have all remarked on how well he was doing. The only down side is increased appetite, but he loves salad and broccoli, so he gets more of them. I dreaded the idea of medication, but now I just keep hoping that we continue to enjoy the positive effects. Connie Mom to (7), Austin (5), (5)DS-ASD, and (5). Guest guest
Ive written this before but risperdal was a nightmare for Nicky, within a week she was a dridbbling, piddling zombie with tremors even her tongue was writhing,we tried Lustril(serenace) which had no visible effect, sodium valproate makes her manic.she is currently on carbamazepine 200mg bd for epilepsy and thioridazine and temazepam prn,I have the prn s in liquid form do that it is easy to give tiny doses and workup the dosage if necessary,Pat
Guest guest
sara, good luck weaning and introducing the seroquel.. don't be discouraged if you see him acting worse for the first two weeks...i was ready to throw the seroquel hat into the disgarded medication pile, but ashton started to respond really well last week...i guess it was almost three weeks and now the whole staff involved with ashton swear they are seeing the " WOWOWOW AFFECT " . her teacher is so excited.... as for appetite, she is REALLY hungry in morning, so i am making her a big breakfast, but at lunch and supper she is not eating as much, which is good...she already weighs eighty pounds.... we too are watching what she eats, i am not doing seaweed, but putting more veggies into the servings, cooking less meat so after one serving its " all done " and her choices are fruit or veggies... lmao she didnt like this at first but is adjusting,,,,,, i hope she holds up well with holidays, having a change in routine since we are venturing to buffalo to freeze our keesters off..have a blessed turkey day....leah
Guest guest
Matt has been on Risperdal for about 6 months now. He started out on .25 mg and is now up to .50, just once a day. IT is working fine. I would like to see more concentration, but everytime we try to re-introduce some ritalin/dexedrine/adderal, the negative things start again. Ritalin and dexadrine make a tic (head jerk) come back immediately (within about 1/2 hour of taking them) Effects of Risperdal have been more comliance with rules, more speech, more complex speech, and he is sleeping fine also. He has gained about 25 lbs since beginning risperdal, and we are now really trying to watch what he eats. I think the tempertantrums seem to be fewer and less severe, he seems more able to handle changes and differences in schedules. Overall, I am happy with the Risperdal. Guest guest
Congratulations. This is a great news. Anti-psychotic drugs like Resperdol are very hard to wean. It pisses me off when doctors give the to non-psychotic patients especially children.
