Guest guest
Hi All: Am looking for some input from those of you who have dealt with regression. My daughter was in a DOC Band from age 6 - 10 months with 70% correction for flatness on back right and front left, etc. Now she's 13 months and I don't know if I'm imagining it or not, but her head doesn't look all that great to me anymore. We're still trying to rid her of torticollis, and I don't know how we could do a two hour (one-way) commute into Chicago again for months on end, plus all the insurance hassle, possible non-coverage, convincing someone to write the Rx, etc. etc. etc. Is it due to a growth spurt, can it " fix itself " ? I almost hate to ask that, as my whole assumption in the spring was that NO, it wouldn't self-correct, so she needed a Band. What am I supposed to think now? What do you all think I should try? I'm feeling a bit sick about the whole thing. Joan
Guest guest
Joan, An exit cast impression is often taken at the end of treatment simply as a 'measurement' or an indication of what the infant's head shape is at that time. Then if the parent has questions or concerns at a later date this exit cast can be poured up into a mold and the child can be compared to see if any change has occurred. We expect that the child's head will continue to grow larger but maintain it's shape once the band is discontinued. This has been our experience after treating thousands of infants. There are a few reasons regression is extremely rare. Typically, once out of band treatment, the child is older & therefore the skull isn't as malleable; and change would have to occur with growth, which has slowed over time. Also the child has usually started sleeping in different positions and is upright and active during the day. It's for this same reason that we also don't see head shapes self-correcting once they reach a certain age. It's not an impossibility, but it is very rare that an infant's head shape would regress. However, I do advise you to discuss this with the therapist at the center where she was treated. Also, please feel free to respond to this post if you have any further questions.
