Guest guest
my 5 year old son is about to start school. We are therefore going to have a problem with giving enzymes. He is not able to take the enzymes for himself and will not be able to eat a particular food item first or drink if mixed in. Schools in England do not like to give any medicines and are not covered legally to give dietary supplements. I need to find a way around the ruling so he can have enzymes whilst at school. Any one battled this one with their school?
Guest guest
Try this site it tells you how to mix enzymes with food. I make my son chocolates and put them in his lunch and tell him that he should eat his chocolate first. Like he would ague that. e http://www.enzymestuff.com/discussionmixing.htm#
Guest guest
Do you live from from school? I realize not everyone can do this and it's an inconvenience but I bring my grandson his lunch and a pill every school day becasue they won't accommodate us either. He is SCD and the school refuses to refrigerate his lunch or heat it up in a microwave. opss far from his school and have the free time? --------------------------------- Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs.Try it free. Guest guest
would a note from a Dr. help you? My doctor wrote a " prescription " for me for enzymes and the school HAD to give them to my son. The school nurse can do this at lunch time. What happens to the kids at your school who need medications throughout the day? Can you go into school and administer them? I would push the whole " doctor's note.. " Sorry for the struggle..how frustrating! h313gju <h313gju@...> wrote: my 5 year old son is about to start school. Guest guest
Thank s to all who have tried to solve my problem. I have a Gastroenterology consultant on my side and he has written a letter saying that it is ok for my son to receive these enzymes. The problem is is that they are not under the British Medicines Act and therefore do not need prescribing as they are a food supplement. the school though feel that they are a medicine and should be prescribed. They cannot legally be prescribed by a doctor. The school have theupper hand and can refuse to give. Any one got passed this ruling in England? Guest guest
I am fighting a very similar battle here in the US. I have prescription (even though they are not meds) from my local doctor and a doctor from Pfeiffer Treatment center too but our school says that they are not FDA approved, even though they are Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) and do not need to be " approved " by the FDA. I have been fighting our school for a year now. Each day I go to the school and give him his 4 enzymes before lunch. It is very frustrating because if I am 5 minutes late to catch him between classrooms then I have to pull him out in front of his friends (he is very mild and this is very embarrassing to him) to give them to him. I have another meeting with the school next week. I will let you know if I figure something out even though England may still not do it. Guest guest
Can I ask where you live? I just posted another email on this sight explaining my situation that I have been fighting the school for a year now on this enzymes at school thing. I have been taking them to him each day at school which I am able to do but what about working moms? Not to mention he is very mild so this is embarrassing to him and adds another 10 mile round trip each day to my vehicle in addition to taking and picking them up from school. My school in Ankeny Iowa has said that since they are not FDA approved that the school does not have to do it and are not willing to pick up the legal exposure even though there isn't any. Really frustrating. If you know of anything to back up your schools decision that would be much appreciated. Thanks, Tami Re: school and enzymes would a note from a Dr. help you? Guest guest
For us a Doctor's note submitted during an IEP meeting specifying his need for enzymes prior to consumption of any beverage or meal was sufficient. We're fortunate that in the state of California, and the whole " free and appropriate education " and " least restrictive environment " legislation allows us the ability to specify our son's " needs " to be met to allow him to attend public school. school and enzymes my 5 year old son is about to start school.
