Haleh:

The ammonia smell can be bacteria but it can also be symptomatic of other,

more complicated things (having to do with genetic mutations and protein

metabolism and amino acids and methylation). I'll botch it if I start to

explain. Best to go to Amy Yasko's website and log into the parent group

and search the database for " ammonia " . I don't know if you spend any time

over there. I wish I could spend more. She has so many good things to

contribute - but there is so much of it and it is not simple reading (for me

anyway!).

Every time I treat my son for yeast using a natural anti fungal, I see

subtle

worsening of behavior and his mushy BMs start smelling of Ammonia. The

longer

we stay on the natural product, the worst it gets. This has been the case

with

Grapefruit Seed Extract, Oil of Oregano, Uva Ursi as well as Advanced

Biocidin.

I have a recollection that this subject has come up recently. Anyone has any

insight.

P.S. his complete stool analysis revealed no bacterial problems.

I did go to Autism Answer and did a search for Ammonia and nothing came up but

I may look in there further.

Bacteria has never been a big issue but the second part sounds right. My son

is having trouble with protein metabolism, low on tryptophan, in spite very

good protein intake especially from turkey meat at the time of testing, and we

are a low methylating family. That is the entire genetic pattern of both side

of the family for my son. We have a number of conditions in our family history

associated with low methylations mainly issues with plain old sanity...lots of

artists and insane thinkers as well as quite a number of cancer deaths. For my

son lab tests confirmed this too including the Genomic Detox profile.

I like to know what I need to do without having to switch to Dr. Yasko. I am

really happy with our DAN. Perhaps I need to discuss this with her but first,

I'll research myself.

I'm really happy with my DAN too but lots of people taking bits and drabs

from Yasko and really piecing together a more complete picture. Dr. Cave

has definitely recommended a few things that, if Yasko is right (and if my

daughter carries certain mutations we aren't sure if she carries; we only

know about MTHFR 677 not even 1298) and we are clear for 677), wouldn't be

optimal over the long term. The search engine is a little hard to navigate.

Yasko has tons of posts on ammonia and CBS up regulations. I have some of

them saved on my computer (mostly due to a friend who is good to me not

always by my own ability to find the stuff over there!). I'll see if I can

dig it up.

CF and egg free are going pretty well. And I am still on the fence about

chelation.

Improperly digested protein can cause an ammonia problem.

How about die off of yeast?

Is yeast made of protein?

The Ammonia smell always returns when we treat for yeast and with it comes a

very subtle change in behavior (more oppositional).

We use calcium butyrate for the ammonia problem.

Maybe when you treat for yeast, bad bacteria overgrows? That can

cause the ammonia. What is your anti-fungal?

My daughter had ammonia smelling stools and I

finally found in Kirkman Lab catalogue that it's an

inability to absorb protein. We're pursuing 'sound'

issues which are foremost now, and in the process of

moving, so I haven't given the product to her for

awhile-can't remember it- but look up Kirkman Lab in a

search, and they'll have the enzyme your child needs.

Thank you so much for the reply.

Yes protein absorption is an issue but also Amy Yasko has testing and

treatment for this and I am currently beginning to research Yasko's model of

autism treatment.

She talks about a genetatic mutation (CBS upregulation) which rises ammonia

levels and flushes out other important supplements as to get rid of Ammonia,

competes with other nutrients. I don't fully understand Yasko's protocol yet

but am interested in it as it may present a more step by step toward taking

these metabolic road blocks. I will embark on this research this spring after

which I perhaps share that here too.

First time in my life I wish I was a sceintist instead of an artist.

For protein break down, HNI's AFP Peptizide also works well which my son is on

it.
