hi tom,

ive been a big guy all my life but i think you are right about the meds doing a number. as hard as i try to diet and exercise im still hanging in there with over 50 on my waist.

when i had hodgkins disease in 1994 the chemo made me put a revolving door on my fridge. i gained a hundred pounds in something like 6 months and have been fighting it ever since.

my latest attempt is a state of the art treadmill. all i need now is the initiative to use it once it is delivered and set up on monday. the thing is supposed to have a heart monitor built into the hand grips. guess we shall see.

too many hills in my community for me to handle. at your age i wouldnt get to upset about a 40 waist. especially with the limitations the docs have put on you.

-- Big Belly

Question?????After I was implanted with my ICD, I was put on a bunch of different medications. After a period of time I began to slowly, but surely, gain weight, especially in the waist area. I went from my usual 36 waist to a booming 40 inch waist. I realize that I am not as active as before and still eat some "no-nos", but the big belly obviously exists. I have known other guys who also developed a big belly after implant. I feel sure it is a combination of things, but I am interested in knowing if any of you have experienced this type of weight gain. I was size 36 pants for most of my adult life until 2 years ago.......I am now 55. So the change was a quick one. And personally, I hate looking in a mirror......(laugh). Must be mid-life crisis.Tom in PA Please visit the Zapper homepage athttp://www.ZapLife.org

Bob...

Same w/my husband after going thru chemo for Non-hodgkins... I assume

you were on prednisone, the wonder drug, as well? DH was on 80mg, I

think twice a day, (can't remember for sure now) for over 14 wks and

then weaned off ... I vividly recall that T'giving... he came down in

middle of nite for a " snack " and consumed 1/2 the turkey that was

left from dinner, no joke! ... it was awful... and he's never been

able to lose the extra pounds since... been 11.5 yrs.

Is anyone else under the impression it's not only the slowing down

after dx and the fact that we're all getting older,(well, most of us,

I'm not ... I'm a toys R us kid and I don't ever wanna grow up) but

also the medications slowing our metabolism? I've read that on other

boards and sites, but my cardio doesn't seem to agree w/my theory.

Same here, did a lot of walking and exercising, but it really didnt

help in the weight area. Finaly went to a weight loss place, LA

Weight Loss and dropped a bunch of weight and " relearned " how to eat.

Actually the secret to the whole thing is that you comit to show up

for weighins. This means every time food comes near your mouth you

think, " that damn woman is going to weigh me and then fiuss at me for

not loosing three pounds this week, better not eat this " :)

I believe that Weight Watchers will bitch at you just as well for less

money :) More bitch for the buck equals sucess

Thank you Steve and for your responses!

It made me feel good to know that there are other guys out there that have

experienced this type of weight gain. What do you guys think is the cause,

is it food, is it meds, or is it our fate?

Hey, in PA. Where are you from in Pennsylvania?

Take care,

have cancer, we also hate to admit that the food intake has something

to do with it :) Its tough to learn how to eat right again

All:

Thought I would weigh in (Sorry. Without puns, I'd have only a few social

activities with friends; with them I have none whatsoever.) with my

experiences and opinions.

I have gained up to fifty pounds since my SCD, defibrillator implant and

daily dosage of meds, vitamins and minerals. I have cut back on much of my

activities so I do not get the exercise I once did.

IMO and with some cardiologist agreement, it is the meds primarily. My

metabolic rate has apparently changed, and that contributes to it along with

decreased exercise. But the major reason is medication.

My cardio suggested the Atkins diet and i have dropped half of the weight

gain and ma pretty much staying there for now. will push for more loss in a

month or so when the heat drops to a manageable level. (It's running about

100 right now in CA.) Can heartily recommend that diet for large, quick,

easy weight loss, but keeping it off is very hard.

Also I have had what appear to be cardio related side effects from either

the meds (most likely), the SCD or my foolishly allowing myself to get

older. (I'll be 60 in December.) My hair loss has accelerated very

dramatically and I appear to be growing more scalp to compensate. My

balance is noticeably poorer, although not at any sort of dangerous or

serious levels. My short term memory (not that lost during SCD) is also

rapidly deteriorating.

Fortunately my bad jokes and worse puns have not been affected.

Your doctor really recommended the Atkins diet?

I've heard many doctors don't support that - this is interesting

Bill... LOL! ... thanks for the laugh on this dweary Saturday morning

in NJ... I have one ? for you... where on Earth did you find a cardio

that would say it's the meds? I have been told so by nurses,

dietians, and have read same on various medical sites here on line...

meds slow heart rate... meds slow metabolism... (meds slow us,

period!) ... but I'll be danged if I can get my cardio or EP to

accept/admit this verbally... actually, they each flatly deny it ...

(then cardio advises me to " stop reading " \o/... but that's her only

shortcoming that I've detected)

Your comment about less hair/more scalp is another interesting

comment... how many have read of a study finding a connection between

balding men and their probability of having heart disease? ...

something to do w/genes I think.

Dear Tom and Others,

I am amazed that so many of you are exercising! How wonderful for all of you

and know you have me thinking that maybe I need to challenge my doctor more.

I had third icd implanted in July 99 and have never ever been zap free since.

Sometimes I will go a month but 6 weeks is the most I have ever made it. My

doctor made me quite work and file for disability after this third unit was

installed. I have been heavily restricted about doing anything. I was told

no ocean swimming, no hot tubs, no running, no biking, no active sports, and

positively no driving now or in the future. Maybe this is one of the reason

I have been so depressed. I was told to not be out in the sun as to all the

medicine I take. I am on Betapace 4 x day 120 mg. I cannot take that

aneronian I am also on Prozac to ease anxiety, Previcid,Singular,Prenivil,

Synthroid, Vioxx, Allegra, Isosorb din,Microzide, and 4 inhalers. I have

severe allegories and asthma which is drug induced they have also diagnosed

fibromylgia, and resent was sent t DR who now states I have developed drug

induced lupus. I see several dx all alll seem to be n agreement. I have

severe problems with reflux to the point that acid as scared my espogaus and

I have had it dilated twice in the past 4 months. I keep little of what I

eat down and have lost 40 over the last four months. I had a bid belly and

have been roughly over weight for the past 15 years.

I have always been a fighter although this sounds like a whiner. I have but

myself on an exercise program and have tried just walking. I would love to

ride my bike but have been warned that this is not good as when I pass out I

good fall and hurt myself severely as I have no forewarning of my Vt. Please

has anyone else have this type and are you exercising how are you doing it

and how did you start. They told me not to leift or carry hey I am only 55

so help me out here,

Sharon in Ohio

Did it bother you at all?

Absolutely! My cardio believes in the Atkins diet when the weight is

significantly higher than merely overweight. last aich check-up we talked a

bit about it. I eat lots of protein and salads, take vitamins and avoid

carbs like I avoid housework. It works, and it works quickly. No problems

at all.

Same here. he suggested it, but did demand a Low fat modification,

eliminated all beef and pork products to no more than once a week in

max 6 oz servings, replace with chicken and fish plus soy substitutes,

still hold to max 6-8 oz servings. No sugar, fat, carbs (two pieces

low cal 40 cal bread per day) much protien and vegies, few snacks

must have fruit twice a day, no banannas or pears. Balance the diet

and read the lables first, low salt. Drink 1/2 body weight in ozs of

water per day.

Great results, whole family lost weight and felt much better. My BP

dropped to a point all meds stopped, Cholesterol down to a point

lipitor discontinued, all in 6 months. Lost an average of three

pounds per week.

Requires close meal planning, but was never hun

Dear Bozena,

One of the side effects of long term prednisone usage is accumulation of fat in the abdominal area. It is just one of those "nice" side effects of that nasty drug.

My son was diagnosed as Celiac by one lab, and we noticed that after we

stopped gluten, the belly receded a lot. Big belly is a classic sign of

celiac (my son really didn't have any other physical symptoms- only

behavioral). Has your daughter been tested for Celiac by a reputable lab? If

she is Celiac, enzymes are not enough to fix the gluten issue- it must be

avoided.

big belly

My daughter has been on gf/cf for, hmmm, about 9 months. I didn't

see huge behavior or focus changes going on it; and now that I've

broken it for about 2 weeks, I don't see huge changes going off it

either.

I started my daughter on enzymes a while back (Houston) and didn't

see much back then.

More recently I started my daughter on Kirkmans enzymes, and her

stools are really good now, the right color and firm and not as

horribly smelly as they were! The enzyme is

EnZym-Complete/DPP-IVâ„¢ . She's been on that enzyme about 2 months.

When we stopped gf/cf two weeks ago we were on vacation, and we

continued to give enzymes.

Now two weeks later, behavior is fine, stools are fine, but her

belly seems really big.

So I'm trying to figure out...is her belly big because it's bloated,

gassy, irritated somehow? Something that can be fixed with enzymes?

Or is her belly big because she really enjoys food now that she can

eat all the things she wants because I let her?

I don't notice her being more gassy.

Has anyone been through this? Suggestions? Ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks

I am interested to see other's responses on this too.

My son's tummy has ALWAYS been VERY big. Sure, he's a

big kid...but, his GI Dr says its because he is

constipated (KUB showed stool in his entire colon.)

Not sure if its similar or not. When we were doing the

" cleaning out " process this weekend, his tummy got

really big and hard after a Doculax tablet.

my tough nut gut kiddo sometimes has a big belly but soft to the touch. he

normally has a bm once every 7-10 days. and that is with a garden variety of

laxatives and suppositories. well, we recently started ldn and boy did his

belly swell up and was tight as a drum esp on the right side. this never

happened before! of course i stopped ldn (for now) and talked to his doc about

this. something is going on inside that gut! still waiting for an appt with
