We used acrylic paint (non toxic, non smelly) - 3-4 coats, rub on transfers,

and then (VERY IMPORTANT!!) 4-6 coats of acrylic VARNISH (I used Home Decor

brand, bought it at 's) Apply in thick coats, but watch for

bubbles!

If you don't varnish, the paint will chip, or smear with the alcohol.

I didn't do it all in one go. I did the paint first (dry an hour

between each coat), then the rub ons (they don't need to dry), then 2 coats

of varnish (1 hour between coats). The following 4 days I added a

coat of varnish after it was cleaned, allowing it to dry while it was off

for the hour. You might want to see if you can pick up the band at

an early appt. so that you can get started and have on her head by the

end of the day (Hanna was wearing hers by late afternoon), or wait to start

the next day.

Every once in a while I would do paint touch ups, and every few weeks,

I would add a coat of varnish.

Hope this helps! I'll attach some pix of Hanna's finished band.

Good luck!

We have decided that we want to

Thanks,

Anyone want to voice an opinion about their decision to leave their band white or to paint it? My husband and I are vacillating between the two. I am curious about the pros and cons and experiences of each.

We decided to paint it. We wore it white one day and everyone looked at my son like he had been in a terrible accident, wondering what in the world had happened. Once we painted it, people did not think of the helmet as some serious device, it made it much easier to explain too.

My son has had his band on for a little over two weeks, he is 6 months old. The

first week

while it was not decorated I found more people staring and afraid to say

anything to him

or me. I was not used to that since before his band so many people would tell me

" how

cute he was " now in his band, I was getting stares and no reaction. I think

people thought

it looked very " medical " and did not know what was wrong with him.

I just decorated his band two days ago and yesterday when I was out with him,

people

were talking about how cute his helmet was, and would actually talk to him and

not be

afraid.

In my opinon, the decoration definitely helps. We have " linebacker in training "

on the front

with all different football team stickers on it.

I think if you make it fun. People don't think something is wrong with your

child.

I already knew before we got my son's band that we would be painting it. We went to the local craft store ('s, Hobby Lobby) and bought the 2 oz bottles of opaque acrylic paint, all-purpose sealer to paint on the band to get it ready so the paint won't chip off as easily, stickers to put on the band over the paint, and varnish to make it glossy and to protect the paint and stickers. We did that the first full day he had the band. He didn't wear it at all that day beacuse of us painting it, but it sure looks cute and not as medical. I did see a 6 mo. old in Toys R Us that had a plain white band with no stickers or paint, and he had been wearing it for 2.5 months like that. I guess that parent didn't see the point in doing anything with it, since he will only be wearing it for 3-5 mos. It all boils down to if you want to do anything with it or not. The baby won't care either way. Have you read the Decorating Tips in the file section

of the Plagiocephaly's homepage? That really helped us. We used it as a guide in painting and decorating his band. I hope this helps, Janie mom to 8 mos. severe brachy & tort. Banded 11-18-05. If you do decide to paint it make sure you apply varnish or sealer

frequently. I did this with my son's band twice a week. The paint

job lasted.

I was pretty lazy with DD's band. We didn't have as much luck. As a

result her band was white again shortly after being painted. Now we

are just using stickers.

It happens but the more varnish you put over it the better.
