Guest guest
I just started chelating my son with ALA, I just gave him his last dose for round 2 and I am seriously happy we get four days off. I find it very stressful!!! I worry that he is not taking all of what I give him. I have noticed that if I put it in juice or water, if he doesn't drink it down immediately, it starts to smell really bad and he won't touch it with a ten foot pole. I actually prefer the nighttime dosage, except at one time last night I didn't get ahold of his nose, so he spit some out in his sleep. I am not sure if he got the full dose and if this discounts the whole round. Any thoughts on this? Also, for one day during round 2 he smelled like rotten eggs. I recently heard of transdermal ALA, has anyone used this and where would I get it? Thanks, Liz
Guest guest
Liz, If it is any reassurance, the first few rounds are stressful, getting used to it and finding the best way to administer it. I found that with my son I use a medicine syringe and only draw about a quarter teaspoon of juice into it, then use that small amount of juice to mix the dmsa/ala in your case, ala with. Then he can drink the mixture or you can squirt it using the medicine syringe. I found that using a small amount of liquid and mixing it right before giving it worked best. That way the juice was cold and there was no time for the smell to take over. He actually prefered to get it over quickly using a small amount of liquid. At first I was just mixing it into a few ounces of jiuce but it took too long and he did not want to finish it. I also have a sticker chart on the fridge for each time he drinks it. We give a reward, for my son that would be a forbidden gummi fish. You can choose whatever is suitable for him, but it did help. He drinks it without much fuss now, and can finish it because there is not much there. Using a cold liquid will hide the taste better too. And using the small liquid amount will help make sure he is finishing it. His odor is par for the course. Sometimes they will smell funny, or their stools with reek really bad. You are lucky that he will drink it while sleeping. For my son we have to be woken up and then it takes him some time to realize he has to drink it or I will not let him sleep. I too felt like going over to TD after the first round. But there is not much evidence on how much medicine they actually get from transdermal dosing. However, I do remember seeing something on how to make your own TD-ALA, I think it was on Onibasu. Otherwise, I think you have to find a compounding pharmacy to make it. > > I just started chelating my son with ALA, I just gave him his last > dose for round 2 and I am seriously happy we get four days off. Guest guest
Hi Liz Yes it is a wonderful feeling when you realize on Monday night (we chelate Friday morning thru Monday morning) that you don't have to get up every three hours. It is exhausting. I have been using ALA for my children for 10 rounds and have never experienced any bad smell to the liquid or smelly kids either. We use Kirkman's hypoallergenic 50 mg. I am giving 10 mg per dose so I measure out five doses of juice and empty the whole capsule into the juice. Despite it being stored for up to 15 hours (in the fridge), it never smells bad. But, my kids know when it's medicine time and they drink it right away after I measure out the dose. They always take it happily so I don't think it ever tastes bad or anything. What brand of ALA are you using? Maybe try a different brand and see if you get better results? Sorry I don't have any info on TD-ALA..
