Hello to all! I am very happy to have stumbled upon this site. I am

the mother to two young boys on the autism spectrum. My oldest,

, is 4 years old. My baby is Caleb, and he is 22 months. I have

a neurotypical daughter Grace who is 6. I have heard so much about

chelation therapy...and mercury related to autism, but I just was

unsure if that was the case. I have been an ER nurse for ten years,

and have always believed in the medical establishment to 'do no harm.'

But more and more I see so many travesties occur in the health care

setting, and I want desperately to help my sons if I can. I have done

research, and am a bit confused about the various chelation products.

I have a girlfriend who started her son on oral DMSA and his

regression was immediate. I am cautious on what to do and where to

start. Pardon my ignorance...anyone have time to help me???

Thanks so much...

Deanne

Welcome Kristal.  That is ABSOLUTELY awful that a psychologist would say something like to a mother EVER.  Extremely inappropriate, unprofessional and I know very disheartening for you.  ((HUGS))  Do NOT listen to that.  Like an earlier poster, I suggest never returning to that person.  You can find people who treat you with kindness even if they have to deliver disturbing news.  Also like the earlier poster, you are your child's only advocate and you have done the right thing getting him evaluated.  That's what a good advocate does.

So, you homeschool.  Are you part of a homeschooling co-op where he gets interaction with other kids?  If not, is there one around you?  You can also look for social skills classes.  There are lots of options for social skills other than school if you don't want to go that route.

My name in Kristal, and my son was just today diagnosed with Aspergers at 10 years old. He is currently homeschooled, because the public school system just didn't work for us. I have my Masters in Education and was teaching when we decided to homeschool.

Now the psychologist is saying that he needs school for social skills and I'm going to try to find an autistic school here near us, as the public school system here does not offer services besides consulation.

Looking forward to getting to knowing everyone.

I cried today when I read the report because the psyc was so harsh with her wording. She described me as overlaborative and magnifying pathology because I was pessimistic and feels helpless and unable to deal with my son's problems.

I referred him for the testing, because I've known since he was 2.5 something was wrong. I am relieved to have the diagnosis, although my spirit was crushed at the words she used to describe me, as it makes me just feel horrible (again for the millionth time in socieity)

Hugs,

Kristal

Welcome, my dd too was a later dx at 9. 1st the psych shouldn't be

pointing fingers. 2nd, unless it is through a special ed social

skills group or such the child will not get the socialization they

need from school b/c they can't do it, they need the instruction to be

able to learn to cope socially. My dd is in 4th and has been in

school since 3 year preschool and the only socialization she does is

led by another child or a child being protective or babying to her,

she is mostly withdrawn and solitary. So if you are giving her the

oppurtunities so socialize she is better off b/c she has adults there

to help as needed to learn what she needs to do. Also you have to

consider that school is 7 hrs long and at that age they may work in

groups occasionally which is structured so different than

socialization but otherwise they have only a few mins before and after

class, occasional free times, part of a 30 min (at most and schools we

have dealt with require silence to allow eating for part of that) of

lunch and 20-30 mins tops of recess. So really very little

socialization.

Also schools are required to do accomodations under idea so they would

have to give you more than they claim to offer.

Hi Kristal,Because the doctors label me as "protective and over-reacting" my daugther suffered from seizures for ten years. Now every time I go to the doctor I stressed out that she never got diagnosed because of wrong perception of my personality and family setting. She got diagnosed when she got spelled from summer camp because they could not wake her up and they got scared...Then I took her to the doctor for testing after several years of asking her primary doctor to have my girl seeing by a neurologist and being denied the doctor decided to test her. The doctor called me later " You were right, they found several seizure activities coming from both side of the brain".She is being treated now, but I can not sleep. Her seizures usually occurs at night, for ten years I have been not able to sleep normally, I still wake up middle of the night, even though her seizures are controlled. My body got so used to wake up in the middle of the night that sleeping pills do not work for me...Health Care provider stereotype people. You should find another psychologist. It is normal to feel pessimistic and helpless when the system is failing us...I feel the same way sometimes.I learned my lesson the hard way, now I usually get a copy of my girl medical records and if I see a nasty remark I challenged it and complaint..... Thank you for this email! I did just that--I filed a complaint, and now the psychological is being re-written! THANK GOD! I'm glad all of you gave me the gumption to do something about it, and not just think it was me!

This group has been a HUGE blessing for me--I hope all of you know.
