I don't mean to suggest this accounts for all the backsliding, but

Andy does talk about the Stall Period when you don't see improvements

for a pretty long stretch. With n there have been months when

every round he was better on-round, and then months when you couldn't

tell except for waves of yeast splashing over us.

FWIW, I think somehow a big part of your answer is going to be

antiviral. I wish I knew what to suggest.
