It does take practice. What I did was every time, say gently, " Pill time, open your mouth, " while putting the capsule up to his lips. He would clamp his mouth shut and turn away, but eventually he got it, and now he usually opens right up, takes the cap, then a sip of water froma sports bottle (I say, " water " as I touch it to his lips). One trick is to pull his cheek out and slip the cap back in the cheek pocket, then touch the sports bottle to his lips and see if he'll drink. Guest guest
2 ways to help this. 1. Change your expectations. The kids are very sensitive to that. EXPECT it to be pleasant, smooth and easy. 2. Swallowing is reflexive, you do NOT have to wake them up. Just mix it up with something yummy and pop it in their mouth. Guest guest
Hi, I have just started doing ALA with my 8 yr old almost NT son. Night dosings I put the ALA in a little water, then into a syringe with room temp water, I gently syringe this into his mouth, he swallows reflexively, then follow it with another syringe-full of water. He did struggle (try to argue) on the first night's dosing (midnight), then was compliant thereafter. ***Don't use cold water, the child will wake up in fright !! That made my son very cross which caused the trouble in the first instance. I did discuss it with him previously that we would be doing " night- time medicine " , so he was prepared for me coming in with it. We are up to round 4, and if you tread lightly it will work OK with him. Every night and daytime dosings are followed by praise, praise and praise too. In the day time, his ALA dosing is taken from the capsule and placed on a piece of fruit eg. watermelon and popped into his mouth, followed by more water. Similarly with getting him to take supps, I have to grind them, and mix the stuff with something pleasant tasting. No point arguing about it if you want to do this long-term. I explain that it will make his bones and teeth big and strong - talking boy-talk helps with my son. na > > > > Last round I decided to start my 7yo on the ALA. Guest guest
Thanks everyone for the ideas. The last dose before bedtime last night, I gave them their ALA (in chocolate syrup in a syringe) as I planned for the night dosing so they would know what to expect. The 7yo liked it, but the 4yo doesn't like the syrup stickiness. During the night, the 7yo did pretty well, but not the case with the 4yo. I just tried applesauce with the 4yo, and it was better. I just had the thought about the water as well and think I will try that tonight. The problem with the syrup is that my sons won't drink water to wash it down. I think I'm going to try the water tonight. Thanks bunches. > > Hi, > I have just started doing ALA with my 8 yr old almost NT son. > > Night dosings I put the ALA in a little water, then into a syringe > with room temp water, I gently syringe this into his mouth, he > swallows reflexively, then follow it with another syringe-full of > water. > He did struggle (try to argue) on the first night's dosing > (midnight), then was compliant thereafter. ***Don't use cold > water, the child will wake up in fright !!
