Guest guest
Hi Everyone, My 17 year old son is having some problems with focusing. He will sit in his classes and just stare off into space or if he is doing a test and has 1hour to do it, he'll do it in 20 min and get a D on the test. He used to be on Effexor and Buspar. He is on nothing and is basically Normal functioning. He has a girlfriend, drives a car, has a job and is doing very well in these areas. It's just his focus. He has trouble sleeping and can only eat a few foods due to a life threatening allergy to milk and dairy products. He also has sensory issues and will not, or can not tolerate the textures of fruits and vege's. He can eat potato's and tomato's in sauce, but that's about it. He is a very frustrating kid. Can you all help with recommendations? I also have a severely autistic, non verbal 15 year old and a 17 month old baby girl and am very very overwhelmed. In fact I just had my 2nd grand mal seizure from stress and exhaustion. Please help!!!!! Thank you,
Guest guest
Have you tried fruit smoothies, fruit juice, and/or vegetable juice? Do you have him on any supplements? Not getting proper nutrition interferes with focus, so if he won't eat fruit and veggies he needs some vit A, C, folic acid, etc. What will he eat? Fruit and pureed vegetables can be put in a variety of foods including burgers, meatloaf, breads and muffins or even cake. I have a recipe for pumpkin or sweet potato cookies, there's zuchini bread, carrot cake, banana muffins, blueberry muffins, apple peanut butter muffins, etc. Ask him to describe the texture he can't/won't eat. Fruit and veggies come in a variety of textures: crunchy (raw carrots), slimy (okra), mushy, stringy, etc. Get him to be specific. When did he start having the vegetable aversion? If you think it's behavioral then there needs to be consequences. An allergy to milk does requires vigilance but doesn't limit the diet that much. My husband and I are long time vegans and find plenty to eat. Classic Galactosemia (my niece has it) is a different story and somewhat more limiting. How old was he when it was determined that he had a dairy allergy? We use almond mylk on cereal and for baking. S S
Hi Everyone,

My 17 year old son is having some problems with focusing. Guest guest
Hi , He has a life threatening allergy to milk and dairy. For example, he will swell up and not be able to breath if he ingests too much milk product, or if dairy just touches his skin he will swell and have trouble breathing. This started right after his 6 months immunizations. As far as fruits and veges. When he was a baby, around 8 months old, he could not tolerate any baby food. We tried to feed him at 4months and he gagged, 6 months, same thing, then 8 months . I started to puree baby food with tofu and baby food peaches. He seemed to tolerate any vege except green beans, as long as it was pureed with the tofu and enough peaches to drowned out the taste. When he started solids it was very very challenging. He would eat skinned plums, and some water melon, but barely tolerated the water melon. He had always been on vitamins. I even tried later on juicing fresh fruits and veges for him and he would vomit it everywhere. We used consequences, but his issues were real. I felt terrible. In the past we tried the product Juice Plus " and varying other things like this. Now that he is older and not around as much, it is much harder. He just asked me for his vitamins again. He is just taking a regular vitamin with iron and a vitamin E. I was thinking about having him try SamE or some other natural focus supplement. Also, trying to get him to drink the vitamin waters. He is a very challenging kid with a very stubborn mind and is almost 18 yrs old. The positive thing is that he is noticing that he doesn't feel good and is asking me to help him. When I push, he won't want the help. It should be self motivated anyway, if it is going to sink in and stay with him. I just want to have the right supplements for him. He would never drink any almond or soy milk alone. That texture bothers him, but I do cook with soy milk for him. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and for your help. -- [ ] Re: Focus for ADHD/Mild Asperger Have you tried fruit smoothies, fruit juice, and/or vegetable juice? Guest guest
I'll ask the obvious but is he taking Omega 3's and 6's? Huge help for focus/attention. Also behavior. Helps as well with mood. Folinic acid (not folic acid) at least 800 mg daily. Has his thyroid/follitin/vitamin D levels been checked? all of those will affect mood and attention. Ask the doc for a simple blood stick and get the answers to those questions. Asperger's kids generally have anxiety, SamE works well for that, but make sure nutritional factors are in place first. Guest guest
If you use SAMe you need to also supplement B vitamins in order to keep homocysteine in check. Guest guest
Hi Amy, It has been hard to get him to take the Fish oils due to the burping it up gross factor. But he is feeling so bad he said he is willing to take them again. I am not familiar with Folinic Acid. I am going to look into it and get some. Thanks so much for your help. I will also take him in for a blood test and make sure they include the tests you've indicated below. Then once his health is better we will start the SamE. Guest guest
Hi Check out Nordic Naturals, they have a lemon flavored oil. Not so " gross. " If you supplement with DHA, that is strawberry flavor. A little more palatable. My son is a very tough cookie. Took forever to get him to take the oils. He takes the SamE " when he feels like it " . IE, when he has test anxiety or a lot of work he has to do in a snap. You know kids don't listen to anyone.......especially when they're 19. Folinic acid is a fairly common supplement in a health food store. I just now found capsules, my little one wouldn't take the tablet (again the yuk factor). We had him on SamE continually in junior high and the early part of high school. He decided it wasn't doing him " any good " so we weaned him off of it. But he reaches for it when he knows he needs it. He knows his own body..... I just started with a holistic practitioner for my little one (dyspraxia dx) and myself. The little one is doing MB12 injections, I am doing it sublingually. I want to chelate the little one, the big one we can't chelate because he has amalgams and of course he hates the dentist (forget removing them!). So we'll have to stick with what's in the arsenal that we know will work. So far, this is keeping him highly functional, doing well in school, work and with friends/girlfriend. One thing I caution parents, don't try to change " who they are " . Aint gonna work. Fix what bothers them, develop their strengths, and let them be who they are happiest being. Nothing worse than trying to be comfortable in someone elses skin if you know what I mean. I let him be his " Aspergers-ish self " and don't disrupt the apple cart. He's doing just fine. Maybe it was all those years of me all over him like a cheap suit that did something in the end, who knows, but for the moment, he's doing fine. Still has that " anxiety " and offish personality, but it's okay. I told him to be an anesthesiologist, the only conversation he has to have with his patients is " count back from 10 " . By the time they get to 8, they're out and your done having to talk to them, lol.......... Another day in autism-land........ He will sit in
his classes and just stare off into space or if he is doing a test and has
1hour to do it, he'll do it in 20 min and get a D on the test.
He used to be on Effexor and Buspar. He is on nothing and is basically
Normal functioning. He has a girlfriend, drives a car, has a job and is
doing very well in these areas. It's just his focus. He has trouble
sleeping and can only eat a few foods due to a life threatening allergy to
milk and dairy products. He also has sensory issues and will not, or can
not tolerate the textures of fruits and vege's. He can eat potato's and
tomato's in sauce, but that's about it.
He is a very frustrating kid.
Can you all help with recommendations?
I also have a severely autistic, non verbal 15 year old and a 17 month old
baby girl and am very very overwhelmed. In fact I just had my 2nd grand mal
seizure from stress and exhaustion.
Please help!!!!!
Thank you,

_______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite. <http://www.excite.com> com The most personalized portal on the Web! Guest guest
To avoid the fish oil grossness, you can get plant-based EFAs. I've used Health From the Sun's liquid flaxseed oil/borage oil/evening primrose oil blend. It tastes like butter and works well (for me) over carbs and veggies. It available at some HFS in the refrigerated supplements section. I've taken SAMe myself. S S
Hi Amy,
It has been hard to get him to take the Fish oils due to the burping it up
gross factor. But he is feeling so bad he said he is willing to take them
again. I am not familiar with Folinic Acid. I am going to look into it and
get some. Thanks so much for your help. I will also take him in for a
blood test and make sure they include the tests you've indicated below.
Then once his health is better we will start the SamE. Does your child take
SamE or do any of you out there have a child doing well on SamE?
Thanks again Amy for your help.
_______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! Guest guest
Amen!!!!! I have already called my regional center case manager and told her my story. She is looking into what they can do for me. I am keeping this in my prayers. Thanks, and how lucky you are to find good people to help you. That is the hardest part for me. We have had some of the worst respite workers. -- [ ] Re: Focus for ADHD/Mild Asperger Hello - I am new to all this so I don't have any " medical " suggestions, but I sure would recommend you contact your Community Mental Health or Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) to check into getting some respite! What is in the sauce that he puts over them? Might also be intolerance, especially to tomatoes. If he is phenol intolerant, that can cause major sleep issues. http://www.danasview.net/yeast.htm Maybe consider enzymes, would he be willing to try them? I use HNI enzymes for myself http://www.houstonni.com/ > not tolerate the textures of fruits and vege's. My son could not eat most fruits and veggies until the end of ALA chelation. It was not a texture issue tho. Dana
Guest guest
Thanks Dana, I'll give these things a try. He was on anti viral's for 2 years with Dr. Goldberg with no real improvement, but the other things might be an issue. The viral component might still be an issue to, but I think I need to get his health up, before we can tell. Thanks for your help. -- [ ] Re: Focus for ADHD/Mild Asperger > My 17 year old son is having some problems with focusing. I have learned recently that for my kids, all the anti-virals I previously used, are now causing problems, but vitamin C at relatively high doses [not as high as I used before] is VERY GOOD. So at least try to give vitamin C, and watch for more yeast. Dana

Guest guest
Millie- How did you know the anti virals were problematic? My son is on OLE and lauricidin and I am worried they are causing yeast but worried to take him off them too! This one works the best of all the Cs I have tried. Dana

My son is on > OLE and lauricidin and I am worried they are causing yeast but worried > to take him off them too! For a while, anti-virals worked very well for my son. After a while, he had regression which I was unable to trace to yeast or other issues. So I dropped the anti-virals and he improved for a while, then regressed. I added back the anti-virals one at a time. Vitamin C caused improvements, OLE caused problems. I am adding back Lauricidin today, to check on that one.
