Guest guest
Nell, Good thought. I could ask, though I am pretty sure the docs think I am a complete quack and won't agree. Any one have any suggestions about how to best approach the docs to get injectable stuff? Anne > > > I have to admit that I have secretly wanted to run some antibiotics > > on this kid for a while. Guest guest
Yellow or green discharge from the nose is commonly thought to be a sign of infection, but it isn't. A cold can last from 12-14 days, that's normal, but if it continues past 21 days, thats a sign of problems. A cold with no fever is viral and antibiotics are useless for viruses. If there is no fever, there isn't an infection so antibiotics probably won't do any good. I would resist the temptation to do the oral Amoxicillin. I would just try some OTC immune boosters and wait and see if it clears up on its own. We get no adverse effects from oral antibiotics, and have used them from time to time and even noted improvement, although the yeast can get bad, so we use an rx antifungal which takes care of that problem. However, her gut was always in pretty good shape. Hope your little guy feels better, Anne. [ ] Help - Antibiotics - To Give or Not to Give? Hi All, My little dude has started getting colds recently, I believe because of the colostrum I have started giving him. He had an irritated throat that I thought may have been strep about three weeks ago. Tests came back negative, and what he had either turned into the cold he has now, or we are dealing with something else. His coughs are getting mucusier, his boogies are pretty yellow, he has some stuff in one ear. To my knowledge we are not running any fevers. He is in decent spirits. A bit testy, but we did just end a 5 day ALA round on Thursday afternoon. Hard to tell what is what. Anyway, my dh made my little guy a docs appointment this morning. I took him to see what the doc said, and she wants him on Amoxicillin. Said what probably started out viral has given rise to a secondary bacterial infection. Is this probably right? I have never given my little guy antibiotics since I started biomed, so it has been a long time. Since he was a chronically never sick kiddo, it was not something I really had to deal with. So, what do I do? I am not so keen on the idea of putting in OLE or some antibacterial that also has antiviral properties. That is a can of worms I am not ready to open at this point. I do have LDN on hand that I was contemplating adding. I also have Transfer Factor 560 and EpiCor on hand. Anybody have any suggestions? I have to admit that I have secretly wanted to run some antibiotics on this kid for a while. That said, I am terrified of adverse effects, especially because he doesn't seem to have the most put together of guts to start. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Doesn't bacterial infections come with a fever usually? At least it seems to for my kids. Guest guest
Jan, that is my understanding, however, peds will still prescribe antibiotics for nasal discharge and that just adds to the confusion, but no temp, no infection, antibiotics are not useful and that is what my research has found. When pushed, that is what our ped admitted to, however, then he pushed an antihistamine. You have no idea how drug reps can push drs into writing scripts and how the drug reps come into the office knowing exactly how many scripts the dr has written for their particular drug and how there are really nice incentives if that dr has been found to be one of the drs writing the top number of prescriptions.....this is medicine? I have no problem using drugs if they are necessary but what ends up happening is the benefit to the dr and the drug rep way overshadows the benefit to the patient. Just working in a family practice clinic for 6 years really opened my eyes to a lot of things. Guest guest
fwiw, our children have been 'no fever'. The pdd one ran her first at age 16 during one of the initial rounds of chelation. Since on ldn, she has had several episodes of low grade fever. Another child,nt, was very sick with a ruptured appendix at age 10. He looked at death's door before anyone took the symptoms seriously. It was 4 days until an elevated wbc appeared. He had NO fever during any of the pre surgical or post operative course. One parent had much the same experience with appendix - only no fever or elevated wbc, just pain and rupture. Another sibling had multiple strep infections with no fever. A grandchild also has this pattern - the only sign of strep for him is ocd. Needless to say, I don't put much stock in 'fevers'. > > > > Yellow or green discharge from the nose is commonly thought to be > a sign of infection, but it isn't. Guest guest
Hi Anne, We had the same thing when we first started using colostrum. Our son had his first " cold " , started out with a bit of a cough and then the snot which he never had before. He didn't seem all that sick, so we upped the Vit-C and the colostrum a bit and it ran it's course. He has had a few minor colds since then with similar symptoms but less snot. He got the flu a few weeks ago and was generous enough to show us his stomach contents, but that also went pretty normal. Good Luck ! Guest guest
There is still an original fever with strep, that's why any fever accompanied by a sore throat of three days or more here, warrants a throat culture. The fever does leave with strep, but was there in the beginning. This pattern of no fever may have relevance to kids whose immune systems are so taxed that they cannot mount an effective normal response to an infection i.e., a fever. This is why is sooo important to know your own kids. Guest guest
Thanks to all who responded. , I have checked his temp again and it is normal, so I will heed your advice and not go the amoxicillin route. I am tempted to let it run its course a bit longer with the colostrum and astragalus I have in, with C/A, etc. Thanks again to all. So much to learn.... Guest guest
Anne, We are doing ½ to ¾ tsp per day 1 time per day. We started using the colostrum mostly in the hope that it would help the gut to heal. I honestly don’t know if that is working or not, but it seems to have “normalized” his immune system response. Yes, the stomach thing was quite the deal, he was in the bathroom (linoleum floor) and said “my stomach hurts”, came out into the hallway (carpet) and hurled. I was surprised that it didn’t seem to upset him that much. We gave him a big glass of water to wash down the stomach acid and he went to bed. We gave him an ice cream bucket (pre GFCF) to take to bed and told him to use that if necessary, sure enough later that night he woke up and used the bucket. We were quite proud of him for handling it so well. More water and back to sleep. That was the last of it other than just general stomach upset for a couple more days. I can tell you that 1 year ago before we started the bio-med stuff he would not have handled it like that ! Guest guest
, I think you raise some really good points. I put my son on uva ursi this past summer to help with some yeast and apparently he had been carrying a strep infection, because it wasn't until the uva ursi that he broke out in a raging fever. A bit later his hands and feet started to peel. I didn't realize until about a month later that we had blown a strep infection out. He showed no signs except some OCD behavior. Not surprisingly, his OCDishness has decreased pretty significantly since then. It isn't altogether gone though, which makes me wonder whether I need to consider running another course of uva ursi.... This all just confirms for me that our kids can be so immune compromised that they carry all these nasties without the ability to fight them on their own (duh).
