Guest guest
Thank you for that post. I was about to start my son on DMSA, too. I just got the DMSA our DAN doc ordered and it is 500mg to be given every 8 hours. I thought the 500 mg sounded really high even though my son is 13 and 108 pounds. If I'm supposed to give .25 mg per pound that's only 27mg every 4 hours. Is that right? (Also, I guess I should reorder from the pharmacy capsules that are lower dosage. Do you know how low of a dosage the capsules come in?) If you could please advise I'd really appreciate it!! Carla
Guest guest
No, that sounds wrong, and yes, it could harm your child. Give your son 1/8-1/4 mg/lb of DMSA every four hours for at least three days on and at least as much time off as on to start and see where you are. What your DAN has prescribed is very dangerous. It really doesn't matter whether you even tell your DAN what you are doing. This is your decision to make, not his. Best, Anne > > Hi, we just visited our DAN and he gave us our first oral DMSA, we are starting next week, he told us to give 250mg of DMSA on an empty stomack first thing in the morning, for three days and than 11 days off. Does this sound right? I always hear of given DMSA every 4 (four) hours, day and night. Is this something new? can this large dose at once harm my child? He is 6yo very sweet no aggressive behaviors but tend to have verbal stimms but language is good. He is loaded with metals and always has tested high for lead. I really appreciate for the help! Guest guest
Hi, Leigh! It looks like our DAN docs ar prescribing the exact same thing only higher dose for my son becasue he's older and bigger. From reading all of the posts, that just didn't seem right. I didn't realize it could actually make them worse. That's horrifying! I hope we find out soon, too! Guest guest
Leigh, Your doc is suggesting a dangerous dose and dosing schedule, liable to cause more harm than good. I hope your son has NO mercury amalgam dental fillings. 1/8-1/2 mg per lb every 4 hours day and night for 3 days and nights " on " and at least as many " off " is a much safer dose and dosing schedule. Unfortunately, lots of docs (even DAN! docs) don't understand chelation. That's why many on this list chelate without a doc, because they couldn't find one who understood it. That's excellent that you questioned it instead of just following what he said. Guest guest
Carla, Yes, that's right. If he does ok on that dose you can increase it a little at a time up to 54 (50 would be easier) mg every 4 hours. S S <p>Thank you for that post. I was about to start my son on DMSA, too. Guest guest
, Thank you for your response! I'm going to try the lower dose to start! I'd rather start cautiously. Do you do 3 days on and 4 or 5 days off rather than the 2 weeks off? Carla

Megson has done great work on the G-alpha protein defect, but that doesn't mean she's right about everything. What we're saying here at a-m is not that *every child who doesn't follow Andy's protocol will have trouble, but that many many more of them do. We're paying more attention to the negative reports to avoid risks. Nell
Guest guest
Agree, some kids do fine on the higher dose, less frequent schedule right up until they are recovered. Some do fine on that protocol for awhile.......then don't. Past tolerance does not equal present or future tolerance. You only have to read one post from one parent who's child regressed with the higher/less frequent dosing to believe, and I have read plenty. Again, have read of ones that do fine with the higher/longer intervals, but why take a chance? IMO, the safest, most effective way to chelate is to use 1/4 mg dmsa per lb of kid and give with regard to its half life, every 4 hours around the clock. Does this sound right? Please don't do this to a child. There was a report about an adult that came in to one of the chelation groups recently. His doctor prescribed a similiar dose and dosing schedule. The patient was in a wheel chair in just a few weeks. There have been many other similiar reports from adults using high, infrequent doses of DMSA. > I always hear of given DMSA every 4 (four) hours, day and night. That's better. When DMSA is given in small doses every 4 h, including at night, the blood levels of chelator remain fairly constant and the metals keep moving, redistribution is minimized. >> Is this something new? can this large dose at once harm my child? The high dose all at once can harm your child a lot. J >He is 6yo very sweet no aggressive behaviors but tend to have >verbal stimms but language is good. You have received better info than I could give, because I only used ALA. But I gave ALA 3x per day, starting with 25mg per dose. You might want to start that way, see if it works for your child. I would not recommend giving such a large dose, and not just once per day. Dana
