Guest guest
I read somewhere that carnosine was a copper chelator. I hope someone else can either confirm or deny that. We give my son carnosine since I read it was good for receptive language. We have been giving him 400 mg am and pm, 800 mg per day. I think it has been good for him. He's been taking it since March. His copper was elevated, but more recently using minerals that taste good if you need them, bad if you don't, it seemed his copper was low now. No hard data, but there's my input on your copper situation, for what its worth.. LOL weinert56 <weinert@...> wrote: Hi, My daughter's hair copper level has gone back up to 720 (high end of ref range is 35). She is 84 lbs and takes 30 mg of zinc, 500 mcg of molybdenum, milk thistle, 500mg taurine and 500mg glycine with each meal. She also takes 15 mg of zinc at bedtime. She has done this for about 18 months. She has taken molybdenum as high as 1mg/meal, but I was reluctant to keep that up for too long because her hair test molybdenum got up into the red. She can't tolerate soy or egg, so I have not been giving her phosphatidylcholine. She has been chelating with 17 mg DMSA and 10 mg of ALA on a 9 times/day, 63 hour cycle every 2 weeks. This seems to be well within Andy's criteria for how frequently it is safe to chelate with ALA when you have high copper. (i.e., 1 day on for every 3 days off). She did a saliva adrenal stess test, which showed adrenal fatigue and her blood tests showed a need for thyroid supplementation, so she is now on Isocort and Armour, in seemingly adequate amounts. She's taking 4 mg of vit C/day and iron since her ferritin was 11. I've tested our water, checked all her supplements for any copper, etc. and found none. Can anyone suggest what else I can do? Is it safe to go even higher with zinc supplements? (i.e., higher than the standard weight + 20mg.) I am reluctant to give up ALA chelation, both because I tried doing just DMSA before and it didn't seem to help her copper much and because she has a lot more side effects on just DMSA. Would giving a somewhat lower dose of ALA still be effective? She's done 39 rounds. If they are helping her, the effects are very subtle and hard to distinguish from maturation. (She's HFA, very high functioning and verbally and artistically gifted, but has auditory and visual processing problems, sensory integration problems, motor planning problems, fine motor problems, etc.) I could never see any improvements from any of the anti-copper supplements in the past, although I do think that she got somewhat more emotional for the first couple of days she was on them (which might indicate a copper dump). The high copper on the hair test was a complete surprise, since I don't notice any symptoms that correlate with higher copper. She's mercury, lead and copper poisoned according to her hair tests. She seems to produce plenty of bile, so I don't believe she has a bile duct problem. I can post her most recent hair test if anyone thinks it would be useful. Thanks, W. (I am also mercury and copper poisoned and feel chelation is helping me a lot, although my copper has crept up to 140, too.) --------------------------------- Stay in the know. Pulse on the new .com. I would not go higher than weight+20, but that is 100mg for your child. Dana

I think she's on everything listed that is advisable for a mercury poisoned 9 year old. (I.e. I wouldn't use MSM because of the mercury and no pregnenolone or DHEA because of her age.) I read in the Baker Autism biomed book last night about carnosine and it stronly claims carnosine is a copper chealtor, so your experience is interesting. Did you have to give zinc the whole time your son was on carnosine or just initially? The book has a long list of indications of when it is not advisable to use carnosine, so I am going to have to think about that some more. I vacillate on this whole topic. Since the high copper does not seem to cause any symptoms, I wonder if it in some hair product or is somehow purely topical. Maybe the next step should be to check my daughter's RBC copper. We added it to my son's protocol and left it in. We think it is a good one, but I'm always open to learning more. When I googled " carnosine copper " , I found documents that indicated it was a chelator, but to my dismay the documents claimed that not only copper but also zinc was neurotoxic. If her hair copper is high, it would appear that the zinc is helping her dump it. So yes, might not be something to really worry about. Guest guest
Don't know for sure that zinc is a neurotoxin, just read it. No carnosine is not the same as Acetyl carnitine or carnitine. From what I have read carnosine increases receptive speech (what you hear) does not increase expressive speech and should be used carefully with any kid who tends toward OCD issues. It is said to be most helpful for kids with seizures. You can read the archives, like I did and find out if it is something you would like to try. Guest guest
read to the bottom of the information of the link I just posted, and you will find this: In summary, giving carnosine to the average autistic will at first cause perceived improvement - probably due to the FIGlu-push effect. After some weeks, taurine loss, copper accumulation, magnesium loss, etc. can, unfortunately, reverse the trend and may leave you with a worsenedcondition to deal with. Jon B. Pangborn, Ph.D. Fellow, American Institute of Chemists I am supplementing taurine and magnesium, but I just wonder how I know when a particular supplement is " enough " or even when continuing it is harmful. I don't know if I should continue the carnosine. (and, really, I'm anxious to stop everything, but I haven't chelated yet. I'm trying to get everything on board to start oral dmsa) anneecbrynn <anneecbrynn@...> wrote: What is giving you cause for concern? Guest guest
I read that piece by Pangborn also. I don't know what to think. If it helps, Andy is pro carnosine. But this statement by Pangborn was one of the reasons we never tried carnosine. I wish there was an answer to how do you know when a particular supplement you are giving is enough of that supplement. The only way, many times, unfortunately, is through experimentation. Guest guest
> Some types of zinc are more useful than others. That reminds me. Does anyone think that any particular kind of zinc is most useful for reducing copper? We're using picolinate with meals (we have low stomach acid) and citrate away from meals. I thought I read somewhere that the monomethionine form (optizinc) was useful for copper. I don't think it was from a source that I thought was reliable, though. Thanks, W.
