My son also has mercury poisoning, is not diagnosably autistic, but

has some idiosycratic symptoms. Colic-y baby, digestive problems.

Better at animal noises than speech at age 2. Identified by age

three as sometimes being unaware of things happening around him.

Food reactions.

This all progressed until in kindergarten his teacher recommended

testing because he seemed so disconnected and " spaced out " at times.

At those times he appears unable to hear verbal communications, will

not make eye contact, engages in stimming and stops speaking.

He has clear periods of reactivity, where he has severe symptoms that

appear autistic, but then he can look absolutely fine and functions

at a gifted level.

Periods of poor functioning are clearly related to food and

environmental reactions.

Anybody else have a child who looks like this?

I am guessing you are new to the list ? Welcome !

You have come to a very good place, there are many wonderful people here who

are happy to answer your questions.

Have you looked into the GFCF Diet ?

As far as diagnosably autistic, that really varies based on the " experts "

who evaluate him.

I recommend you do a DDI Hair Test and read from the " Files " section.

The symptoms you are describing are dead on for what most of the kids on

this list exhibit to some degree or combination.

Chances are that you will ultimately want to do a trial run of chelation.

Keep posting .. Good luck.

Neil,

Well you are so on target! Thank you for the quick response.

My son has been GFCF for about three years. Since then we have had

to add lots of other things, like most grains and a number of other

things. More recently we have recognized reactivity to chemicals and

are now down to cleaning our house with steam and baking soda.

We did a hair test recently, and got mercury at the 98th percentile.

I am trying to do the chelation with ALA as I understand it from this

site (I was probably posting something about this as you were posting

this - see my very recent post). I think it was very promising, and

I am the most optimistic I have been in many years.

It is a relief in some way that I can't quite describe to know that

there are others like him. We have been through calling

it " digestive problems, " " allergies, " " chemical sensitivity, " and now

I'm telling people " mercury poisoning. " With people I know I

sometimes say he's " part time autistic. " Thanks a lot for your post.

I read your post, that is very exciting that you got such noticeable results

from the first round of ALA !

Our son also does much better " On Round " than " Off Round " . lots of

discussion has taken place on this topic.

Strange that you would get Mercury so high on a hair test without any know

recent exposure.

I am a firm believer that LEAD is a big contributor to delays for our ASD

Kids, you might consider DMSA at some point.

I don't know if there is much difference in recommendations for supplements

using ALA vs DMSA or DMPS. You might check the FILES section and others

will no doubt have good suggestions .. If you did a hair test, was the

Copper high ? If so, try to get that down, Andy recommends not using ALA if

copper is exceedingly high.

Watch out for Yeast flare-ups, I am guessing that you have yeast killers on

hand.

Glad things are working well for you, since he did so well on the first

round he will probably continue to respond well with future rounds as well.

Regards,

Neil

Oh, I'd forgotten about that! n had the best camel-spitting

imitation ever at age 2. Saying hello? Not so much.

What you're describing is very typical. If you add in plenty of rage

and aggression that describes my son pretty well.
