Guest guest
This was huge problem when I worked in daycare. My son had these for a while but not since we began all his biomed. I would stop the selenium and see if it goes away. Also, make sure nothing is going on at the sitters, like frightening tv shows. Many kids have these in response to things that scare them during the day. The best thing is don't wake him. Just keep him safe and let it end on it's own. They dont usually remember them. Personally, as a person with mercury, selenium has done weird things to me. It seems to interact with mercury somehow. Not for everyone, but I am just beginning to tolerate very small amounts after 5 rounds. Zinc is not likely a problem. What doses are you using for these new supplements? > > DS waking at night screaming & tantrumy. Guest guest
Jan, we're giving 100 mcg selenium, 20 mg zinc, plus Biomin which has 21 mcg zinc & 150 mcg selenium & some more in his multivit. (5 mg zinc & 12.5 mcg selenium). DS is 2.11 yo & about 34 lbs. Selenium has always tested low & has gone done a little more w/chelation so DAN added the extra supp. Also added zinc although it was in the normal range. I think he suggested it b/c copper was getting too high. Any thoughts? April > > > > DS waking at night screaming & tantrumy. Guest guest
While I am not a DAN!, I can only give you our experience with selenium. Many on adult chelation have had the same problem with it. It does something with mercury but what we don't know. I am giving my son 1/4 of a 50mcg tablet a day, and there is some selenium in his kirkman multi. So not much. My daughter takes 50 mcg a day only on rounds and she is 100 pounds. For me, I tolerate the dose my son takes. Both my daughter and myself are selenium deficient also, and could use it I am sure. But it just made us feel bad, so we had to back off. My son takes 60 mg of zinc a day and he is 40 pounds. Is that mcg of zinc in the multi? If all the amounts below are milligrams then he is getting about 46 mg a day. Which is not too high for his weight. And if copper is a problem then he needs it. It looks like your son is getting over 250mcg of selenium. That seems like a lot. So maybe not stop selenium because he does need it, but go lower. The dosing Andy recommends for chelation for selenium is 1-2mcg per pound divided into four daily doses. So that would be 36mcg given four times a day. Or 144mcg per day. Before my first few rounds, I could not take selenium at all. It made me so sick, foggy brain, headaches, bad dreams, basically real mercury symptoms. After two or three rounds I can take a small amount but not everyday. Most people can take it fine, but I have talked with many who have reported the same problem. So some of us do not tolerate it as well for whatever reason. I am not sure of the chemical reasons behind it. Someone else might know that. At best try reducing his selenium and see if the terrors stop. > > > > > > DS waking at night screaming & tantrumy. Guest guest
Hi April, My son used to wake up at night with severe cramps in his legs. He would stiffen up like you described. This went away as we increased his calcium/magnesium liquid. We were fortunate that he was able to tell us what hurt. If the decreasing the selenium doesn't help, maybe increase cal/mag. Goodluck! I know that has to be hard to watch him go through. My best, Tami Gavin's mom > > DS waking at night screaming & tantrumy. Guest guest
That really seems like a lot of selenium for a 34 lb kid. The zinc seems okay, but I would probably try lowering the selenium by at least half and see if the night terrors stop. Also you can add molybdenum, this really helps get the copper down. Guest guest
Thanks for all the info. everyone! I stopped zinc before I had any responses out of desperation & he didn't wake up last night. Sounds like I need to figure out the proper doses for the zinc & selenium though...this is so tricky! I also had to stop milk thistle a week or so ago b/c he couldn't tolerate it even after reintroducing w/a really low dose & adding Phenol Assist. His liver enzymes were flagged a little low & Friday is a scheduled chelation day. Any thoughts whether it's safe to continue chelating w/out " liver support " ??? Haven't heard back from DAN yet. Also, Tami, you were correct in mentioning the leg cramps. We had those too & that was awful until we figured it, & it seemed to get worse when we did our B- 12 shots. This seems like a different thing though but still not totally sure. Thanks for the input! April > > > > DS waking at night screaming & tantrumy. Depends on what chelator you use. I used ALA without milk thistle for about 50 rounds, with no problems. Dana
Guest guest
Dana, copper is high & selenium is low but zinc is average range. It is pure zinc. Re: liver support, we are using transdermal DMSA. By the way, another night w/out waking (after removing zinc but keeping the high amt. of selenium). Didn't give the additional 100 mcg selenium capsule though today after reading all the posts b/c it worried me. Any thoughts? He has been " off " this last month since starting it but weren't sure of the cause. April > > > > Thanks for all the info. everyone! Guest guest
Hi April Something else to consider- since the night terrors stopped when you discontinued the *extra zinc I'm wondering if perhaps it was causing him to dump copper too fast and making him feel bad. You could consider giving him just 1/4 of the zinc capsule or so and see if that works better and/or add a little bit of moly to help with the high copper. If you can't use milk thistle or other liver support, you might want to reduce the dose of the DMSA, or apply it less frequently, and watch for negatives. > By the way, another night w/out waking (after removing zinc but > keeping the high amt. of selenium). Once my son was fully selenium loaded, it caused problems, so watch for that. Dana
Guest guest
Hi, my older son (doesn't have autism but has other neurological disabilities), started having night terrors at around 2. The first time he woke up screaming and acted like he didn't know who I was, was terrified of me and my roommate, and even her little girls who he loved. We thought he got into some medicine or something so we rushed him to the ER and they tested him and then told us he had a night terror. He continued to have them so badly that when he was older I took him to the doctor and he ended up having all kinds of tests done and finally was diagnosed as a form of epilepsy. It is a childhood form of epilepsy that they " outgrow " . The doctor told me to never, ever try to wake him up and to just reassure him that he is safe and that you are there and you love him and don't touch him if he doesn't seem to want you to, he doesn't actually see YOU, he sees whatever it is that he is " dreaming " about. This is a type of seizure (in my son's case). He had one that lasted so long I ended up calling 911 and after the firemen and ambulance arrived he slowly woke up and came out of it. Sometimes I didn't know when he had one until he was VERY tired the next morning. We got a puppy and she started coming in my room and whining at me until I got up and then she would lead me to his room and every time, he was having one. She is 7 years old now and he hasn't had a seizure/night terror in about four years. The doctor said " I told you he'd outgrow it " . There is a name for it but it's long and I can't remember it. I know that you can just have night terrors sometimes but if they continue or if they worry you, it wouldn't hurt to have a neurologist order a sleep EEG. That's the test that finally gave us a diagnosis. Kathleen > > My son has Asperger's. He often wakes up in the night (10-15 per > night) screaming. Guest guest
My {Asperger's} son had night terrors from the age of two until about the age of nine. He would never remember them in the morning. It was very stressful on my husband & I. I learned after many years if I told him everything was ok and all he needed was a drink of water and to go back to bed after. It seemed to calm him enough to go back to sleep. I have never heard that it was a form of epilepsy. Jeanette
Guest guest
Is that atrait of Aspergers because my son has had night terrors since he was a baby. We didnt know what they were a tfirst. He is almost 6 now and they have lessend but he does have high functioning autism. Im new to the group. My name is Dawn I have 7 kids ranging from 16-3. Look forward to all your support and all I can offer. dawn Re: Night terrors??? when my son was around 2 years old he would have violent night terrors. He would wake up screaming with his eyes wide open. At first I would think he was awake because he would scratch me, hit me, bite, you name it he would do it then he would go limp in my arms and be once again sleeping soundly. It was very scary when it happened but his Dr. assured me that it was VERY normal. BUt was VERY strange. He still talks in his sleep to this day but does not have Night Terrors anymore. Guest guest
my NT, now 11 year old daughter had night terrors. it was aweful. but she isn't aspie. so not sure if it is aspie typical or not... they were aweful. her pediatrician offered this totally useless advice (atleast i found it useless)... keep in mind the time that she has the night terrors, then wake her up about 20 minutes before they start. i all but laughed in his face. and he saw how inpractical this was for a mother of 4, 3 or whom were not sleeping through the night. peace michele Looking for last minute shopping deals?
