Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I'll take a stab at this, but really is best at this, along with Andy. I don't do the counting rules, but your boy has the telltale no to little mercury being excreted. His cal/mag and sod/potassium run contrary to one another, indicating adrenal problems. Try 2-3, 250 mg of adrenal cortex, along with Vitamin C and lots of B vitamins 3-4 times a day. For the copper, try zinc at his weight + 20 mgs per day and add in 1000-2000 mcgs, not mgs of molybdenum. The aluminum, bismuth, arsenic, tin and uranium will come out with the mercury. For kids with lots of low or under essential elements, digestive enzymes are recommended. Someone will help you with this as we never used them. IMO, try low dose oral dmsa at 1/4 mg per lb of boy for a couple rounds, then add in with the dmsa, oral ala at 1/4 mg per lb. Give these every 3 hours during the day and every 4 at night for three days, then at least as many days off. There is a supplement file that some other person will point you to that will give you an idea of what to supplement in order to keep him comfortable during chelation. He needs E, natural d-alpha tocopherol, 400IU once per day in addition to C, B's magnesium and zinc 3-4 times a day in divided doses. Good luck with your boy. Any other questions, don't hesitate to ask, they're free :-) [ ] Need Help Please...Just Got Hair Results Hi. I'm still fairly new to this group, but I've seen posts where some very generous people (Andy, , Moria, , and others) have taken the time to help interpret other people's DDI hair test results. My sweet son is 2 1/2 and I'm not sure what to make of his results. I'm trying to do some research to figure them out, but I would be very grateful for anyone's help in figuring out whether we need to go down the chelation path with him. (He's been GFCF for about 5 months now and he's taking several supplements including enzymes, but I still feel woefully uninformed when it comes to vitamins/minerals/metal problems/etc.) I e-mailed the results to my husband a few minutes ago. He wasn't ever AGAINST me getting the test done, per se, but he was definitely a bit reluctant beforehand. Anyway, he actually e-mailed me back very quickly saying he was concerned about the copper level in particular. So now that I have his attention, I would love it if I could follow it up with a strong interpretation of the data. Guest guest
Thank you SO much, ! This is exactly the kind of practical, thoughtful response I was hoping for! I sent a copy of your response to my husband at work today, and he stopped by a local HFS on the way home from work to try and get the supps you recommended (woo hoo!). He said they didn't have molybdenum by itself, so I'm going to find someplace online to order that (any suggestions?). He also said that when he asked the woman who was helping him for adrenal cortex, she turned her nose up at him and said very haughtily, " We don't carry stuff like that. " I looked up adrenal cortex online and saw that there are a variety of types and sources for it. Do you have any suggestions for a good brand and online location from which to purchase it? Thanks again for your awesome reply, ! While I'm sad that my son (and our family) is going through this, I'm also heartened that there are more steps we can take to help my son heal and grow to be the healthiest and best person he can be. Guest guest
Kathy, I like Enzymatic Therapy for the Adrenal Cortex Extract. Just make sure it is only the extract. The molybdenum, 1000mcg. we found at Thorne Research products. You should be able to find it by googling it, sorry, not terribly good at supplying those nice links that make it so much easier. IMO, I would probably only give 1 capsule of the molybdenum, starting slowly and working up, and then hair test again to see if it is bringing the copper down in 3 months or so. Good luck, Kathy, [ ] Re: Need Help Please...Just Got Hair Results Thank you SO much, ! This is exactly the kind of practical, thoughtful response I was hoping for! Guest guest
Hi, . Hmmm...I just looked through all of his supps and none contains copper (but I'm glad your suggestion made me look!). He's GFCF and doing pretty well in terms of eating, all things considered, though he's skinny (yet muscular) from being hyperactive. We did IgG allergy testing on him a few months back and found out that he's intolerant to quite a lot of foods, many of which are taken care of by him being GFCF, but plenty of which are not. Cashews, coconut, oat, peanut, pork, and rice (yes rice--ack!) were the biggest (i.e., strongest) offenders that aren't taken care of by the GFCF diet. We try to feed him a healthy variety of foods, but he's phenol intolerant, so for quite a while we were avoiding most fruits. Now we use HNI enzymes and have re-incorporated things like raisins (and today after seeing his low potassium, I gave him a banana--he was thrilled!), but we still mostly use pears to get in servings of fruit. He will eat most meats, though his faves are chicken and turkey. I have guilty-mom-complex that I'm not doing even more home cooking than I do. Usually at least once (twice when desperate) a week we get Chik-Fil-A french fries and a McD's or 's meat patty as a meal for him. He loves sweet potatoes and lately he's actually eating broccoli (but only the floret part). We found a millet and potato-based bread he'll eat (thank goodness) so I think we're getting by better than some others I've heard about through another group I joined shortly after he went GFCF. We've been giving him 25 mg of zinc per day, but today I upped it to 50 mg based on 's earlier response. I might have told you far more than you wanted to know, but as you can probably tell, I'm hungry for information and so I want to give you anything you need to know so that I can (hopefully) get some very applicable advice back in return. Thanks for taking the time to respond. If you have any further suggestions for us, I would be very grateful to hear them. Kathy in Florida > > > Is he on any supps that contain copper? Guest guest
Kathy, Your son is mercury toxic as well as copper toxic, as he does meet one counting rule (11 or less in green/white). A lot of these kids have both, although copper doesn't always show up so clearly. I agree with all the recommendations about reducing copper in diet, supplementing molybdenum and zinc. Andy's book also recommends supplements that support bile flow - taurine, glycine, milk thistle extract, and phosphatidylcholine. Not sure the adrenal sign is the classic picture, but the Na/Mg=.33 fits with your description that he's hyperactive, and that almost certainly means adrenal stress. Adrenal cortex extract will probably help. You'll want to chelate with DMSA or DMPS, and eventually add ALA. You need to get the copper down before using much ALA (which reduces copper excretion in the bile). When you get it below 75, Andy says no restriction of ALA chelation is necessary. Read the FAQ, Andy_Index, and Supplement File in the Files section. I find these to be good starting points for learning how to chelate safely. I have found NAET to be very helpful for food sensitivities (and sensitivity to supplements and just about anything else). -- > > Hi. Guest guest
That is a fantastic analysis from ! I just want to emphasize something that she said. In regards to the molybdendum, she notes mcg not mgs!!! This is important because this is toxic at high levels. Our DAN! wrote in bold print for us (don't compare the dose, as I don't have the botttle with me) 1-2 DROPS...NOT DROPPERS! Just thought I'd put an extra word in on that one. -Trish > > > > Hi Kathy, > > > > I'll take a stab at this, but really is best at this, > along with Andy. > > > > I don't do the counting rules, but your boy has the telltale no to > little mercury being excreted. > > > > His cal/mag and sod/potassium run contrary to one another, > indicating adrenal problems. Guest guest
Here's one list of food sources of copper. Food Sources: Oysters and other shellfish, whole grains, beans, nuts, potatoes, and organ meats are good sources of copper. Dark leafy greens, dried fruits such as prunes, cocoa, black pepper, and yeast are also sources of copper in the diet. Guest guest
First off, thank you thank you thank you to those who responded: Dana, , , S S, W, Mandi, and Trish (I hope I remembered everyone)! I can't tell you how much I appreciate and value your help. I don't consider myself a super mushy person, but it almost brings tears to my eyes and I can't even put into words how grateful I am for all of the support and advice you've provided. After reading all of your posts/links and starting the process of reading some of the info in the files section (thank you Andy and Moria for providing such awesome resources!), I still haven't been able to figure out for sure where my son's copper exposure is coming from, but I'm beginning to think it might have something to do with the algaecide (sp?) my husband uses for our pool (and I've read that the chlorine in the pool might skew the hair results somewhat as well). I've done a blow-by-blow assessment of the supplements we're currently giving him and I've tried to pinpoint any foods he eats that might be high in copper (though there aren't too many from what I've read--mostly just buckwheat, pear sauce--I think that one's high?, and potatoes--though I think that's mostly the skin that's high in copper?). I don't want to drive anyone nutso, but I wrote up all of the supps we're currently (and soon to be) giving my son, and I was hoping someone could let me know if they think any of those might be a problem based on the hair test results I posted earlier. It's not in terms of the copper that I'm asking, but I'm wondering if, for instance, we should slack off on the magnesium some considering that it was pretty elevated. I'm just extremely weak when it comes to understanding vitamin/mineral info (though I'm trying to learn more and more). Most of what we're already doing came from people on the GFCFKids list suggesting various supps. Here's the (sorry so long) list: --Natural Factors Big Friends Chewable Multi-Vitamin -- 2 per day (total of Vit A - 3334 IU; Vit C - 200 mg; Vit D - 800 IU; Vit E - 50 IU; Thiamine - 10 mg; Riboflavin - 10 mg; Niacin - 20 mg; Vit B6 - 10 mg; Folate - 400 mcg; Vit B12 - 20 mcg; Biotin - 20 mcg; Pantothenic Acid - 20 mg; Calcium - 130 mg; Iron - 10 mg; Magnesium - 50 mg; Zinc - 4 mg; Manganese - 2 mg; Potassium - 10 mg; Choline - 4 mg; (extras--Inositol - 10 mg; Para-Aminobenzoic Acid - 10 mg; Citrus Bioflavonoids - 10 mg) (NOTE: Sometimes we exchange one of these with 4 Gummi-Vites (roughly the same contents) just to change it up a bit.) --Nordic Naturals Omega Complete 3-6-9 (same as Pro-EFA) -- 1 capsule per day (270 mg EPA, 180 mg DHA, 66 mg GLA) --Vitamin C – 1 to 2 tablets per day (each tablet has ascorbic acid/sodium ascorbate - 500 mg; sugar – 2 g; sodium - 35 mg) (We've found it difficult to get him to take much more than this.) --Liquid Calcium/Magnesium + minerals -- 1 TBSP per day (Vit D3 - 200 IU; Calcium - 600 mg; Phosphorus - 300 mg; Magnesium - 250 mg; Zinc - 10 mg; Manganese - 2 mg (extras--silicon - 10 mg; boron - 1 mg)) (NOTE: Sometimes we use 3 Calcium Gummi-Bears in place of half of the liquid serving just to change it up a bit, but the bears don't have mag.) --Chewable Zinc –- just upped this to 2 per day based on 's recommendation (each has Vit A - 333 IU; Vit C - 33 mg; Zinc - 5 mg; Sodium - 10 mg (extra--slippery elm bark - 5 mg)) --HNI Zyme Prime -- 1 with each meal --HNI AFP Chewable -- 1 with each meal --HNI No-Fenol -- 1 or 2 with highly phenolic foods --Probiotic (either Culturelle or Kirkman Pro-bio Gold) -- 1 capsule per day --Nystatin -- 2 ml 4X/day --Chewable Iron –- just added this today - 1 or 2 per day (each has iron - 7 mg; Vit C – 30 mg; sugar – 1 g) WILL BE GRADUALLY ADDING THE FOLLOWING SUPPS SOON (though I think my husband is really starting to freak out at the number (and cost) of all the supps): --Molybdenum --Taurine --Selenium --Glycine --Milk Thistle Extract --Phosphatidylcholine -- Adrenal cortex extract –- Still looking into options that are out there for this one. Dana—-I looked at the Dove Health Products site you suggested and saw the product called " Cytozyme AD. " How would I administer this to a child who can't swallow pills yet? (I think I'm understanding that it's a pill?) I'm wanting my son to be as healthy as possible before we start chelating (starting first, of course, with getting his copper level down). I truly appreciate any help you can provide. Kathy in Florida
Guest guest
Swimming pool products often contain copper so that's probably the culprit. Probably some on the hair sample itself and some absorbed from swimming. Be careful supplementing that much iron, does your child specifically need iron? What is that assessment based upon. Too much iron is toxic. S S
First off, thank you thank you thank you to those who responded:
Dana, , , S S, W, Mandi, and Trish (I
hope I remembered everyone)! You're welcome! We've all been where you are - just starting, lots of questions, overloaded with information. Yes, algaecide can be a source of copper contamination in the hair. Copper can also be absorbed this way, so the hair level is not all that misleading. Do you have a source for the information you read about chlorine skewing hair results? I recently found something about swimming on a daily basis causing possible elevations in copper and sodium. Otherwise, as far as I know, the results should be accurate. > I've done a blow-by-blow assessment of the supplements we're > currently giving him and I've tried to pinpoint any foods he eats > that might be high in copper (though there aren't too many from what > I've read--mostly just buckwheat, pear sauce--I think that one's > high?, and potatoes--though I think that's mostly the skin that's > high in copper?). > > I don't want to drive anyone nutso, but I wrote up all of the supps > we're currently (and soon to be) giving my son, and I was hoping > someone could let me know if they think any of those might be a > problem based on the hair test results I posted earlier. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Nuts are also a source of copper, including peanut butter. There is a supplement file, although I see noone has helped you find it. The iron in the multiple is troublesome, normally not recommended for our kids as it creates oxidative stress and they have trouble with that already. If you feel you must give the iron, then seperate it from the Vitamin E by at least 8 hours as synthetic iron wipes Vitamin E out completely. Natural iron found in foods does not do that. Vitamin E, natural d-alpha, not dl-alpha is recommended at 400IU per day. More C and B's would be needed for chelation. Good luck, [ ] Re: Need Help Please...Just Got Hair Results First off, thank you thank you thank you to those who responded: Dana, , , S S, W, Mandi, and Trish (I hope I remembered everyone)! Here's the (sorry so long) list: --Natural Factors Big Friends Chewable Multi-Vitamin -- 2 per day (total of Vit A - 3334 IU; Vit C - 200 mg; Vit D - 800 IU; Vit E - 50 IU; Thiamine - 10 mg; Riboflavin - 10 mg; Niacin - 20 mg; Vit B6 - 10 mg; Folate - 400 mcg; Vit B12 - 20 mcg; Biotin - 20 mcg; Pantothenic Acid - 20 mg; Calcium - 130 mg; Iron - 10 mg; Magnesium - 50 mg; Zinc - 4 mg; Manganese - 2 mg; Potassium - 10 mg; Choline - 4 mg; (extras--Inositol - 10 mg; Para-Aminobenzoic Acid - 10 mg; Citrus Bioflavonoids - 10 mg) (NOTE: Sometimes we exchange one of these with 4 Gummi-Vites (roughly the same contents) just to change it up a bit.) --Nordic Naturals Omega Complete 3-6-9 (same as Pro-EFA) -- 1 capsule per day (270 mg EPA, 180 mg DHA, 66 mg GLA) --Vitamin C - 1 to 2 tablets per day (each tablet has ascorbic acid/sodium ascorbate - 500 mg; sugar - 2 g; sodium - 35 mg) (We've found it difficult to get him to take much more than this.) --Liquid Calcium/Magnesium + minerals -- 1 TBSP per day (Vit D3 - 200 IU; Calcium - 600 mg; Phosphorus - 300 mg; Magnesium - 250 mg; Zinc - 10 mg; Manganese - 2 mg (extras--silicon - 10 mg; boron - 1 mg)) (NOTE: Sometimes we use 3 Calcium Gummi-Bears in place of half of the liquid serving just to change it up a bit, but the bears don't have mag.) --Chewable Zinc -- just upped this to 2 per day based on 's recommendation (each has Vit A - 333 IU; Vit C - 33 mg; Zinc - 5 mg; Sodium - 10 mg (extra--slippery elm bark - 5 mg)) --HNI Zyme Prime -- 1 with each meal --HNI AFP Chewable -- 1 with each meal --HNI No-Fenol -- 1 or 2 with highly phenolic foods --Probiotic (either Culturelle or Kirkman Pro-bio Gold) -- 1 capsule per day --Nystatin -- 2 ml 4X/day --Chewable Iron -- just added this today - 1 or 2 per day (each has iron - 7 mg; Vit C - 30 mg; sugar - 1 g) WILL BE GRADUALLY ADDING THE FOLLOWING SUPPS SOON (though I think my husband is really starting to freak out at the number (and cost) of all the supps): --Molybdenum --Taurine --Selenium --Glycine --Milk Thistle Extract --Phosphatidylcholine -- Adrenal cortex extract -- Still looking into options that are out there for this one. Dana--I looked at the Dove Health Products site you suggested and saw the product called " Cytozyme AD.

Guest guest
Hi, ! The iron was my husband's idea. He bought it when he went to the HFS on Friday to try and find the supps I asked him to get (moly, adrenal cortex extract, etc.). He said he had noticed that the hair test showed low iron, so he decided to get some (I do love him for caring even though he's just as woefully uninformed as I am). I think dh is properly chastened now that at least 3 people have expressed concerns about the iron (4 if you include me saying, " Why did you get that? " when he brought it home). Hopefully the two iron chewables dh gave ds won't be too harmful. DS has seemed a little more stimmy/hyper/wired the past couple of days, though---maybe that was the problem? Is there anything we can give to bring down iron? I have another question for you. We're gradually ramping up the zinc right now, and I've ordered some moly and some selenium as a start to get us going on some of the other recommended supps, but I looked everywhere for the adrenal cortex extract and can't find it anywhere. I've been able to find adrenal cortex, but not the extract. (It looks like maybe places are discontinuing it?) I'll keep wading through the group's informational files (and try to find the supp file you mention), but I'm definitely feeling the strain/stress of trying to learn so much so fast (I think *I* could use some adrenal cortex extract!). Again, I'm very excited about the potential for really helping my son in a big way, but wow, there's SO much information to assimilate! Thanks again for everything!! Guest guest
Thanks for all your help, Dana---on this board and the GFCFKids board! Thanks, too, to the others who have answered my ridiculously newbie (yet fervently asked and anxiously-posted-as-I-seek-answers) set of questions (and thanks, Anne, for pointing out the supplements file). Based on a faint memory of the annual water survey our city mailed out to its citizens a few months back, I called today asking for another copy or to be directed to the survey online. They posted the survey, and lo and behold---the copper in the city water was too high. The city was cited for failing that part of the inspection for the first time in umpteen years. This leads me to another question, one I'm hoping someone has found an answer to already: Is there a company that will do an accurate, not-outrageously expensive, fairly quick turn-around tap water assessment for me? I'd love to find a lab that doesn't have a vested interest in selling me a home filtration system or the sort. I'm not opposed to getting a filter(s); I just want the company that assesses the water to be as unbiased as possible. Along the same lines, has anyone bought a home filtration unit/system that they are happy with and would purchase again if needed? I really appreciate all that the listmates in this group do out of the goodness of their hearts. I believe what goes around comes around; so they can look for some good times to head theirway in the near future! Thanks again! Guest guest
Regarding the Home Water Filtration System, we had a long and productive discussion on this about 6 months ago and I believe that the consensus was that the best deal on an RO (Reverse Osmosis) system was at Home Depot. I think it was 5 stages and was under $150 . That is a really good price. RO Systems filter water down to the molecular level. We have one that I purchased online from a place in Ohio, I was pretty proud of the great deal I got, but was trumped by the report of the one from Home Depot.
